yes, declared it a hoax, which, trust me, will be the wording picked up the the right and pounded out over and over forever.

The norms are gone. Dead. Not revivable. They were all a cover for elite bipartisan consensus. Now that they’re out of the way, time for some serious class war. https://t.co/29rAPYJcgM

Ornstein and Kasie Hunt had a pricky little exchange there (Charles Pierce cameo!). Ornstein otm.

Does Collins believe what she's saying? & do others believe her too still.

Collins is saying what she believes... will cover her arse with the most people. As for "others" believing her, they exist, either because they are not invested in politics and merely float weightlessly its surface, or they are heavily invested in the outcome of vote and therefore believe her through sheer will.

but yeah trying to understand the mind of Susan Collins has to be among the most pointless tasks undertaken since we crawled from the sea

it does not matter what they believe because if there was filmed evidence found in BK's possession it would be called consensual sex. if she stepped forward the next day it would be called a lie anyway. the revelation she made in 2012 when BK was the nobody he should have remained is just faked, who cares if all evidence says it's real. lib tears for breakfast.

omar little, Monday, 8 October 2018 21:14 (five years ago) link

It matters, a little. I can't think of Clarence Thomas without thinking of pubic hairs on soda cans, long before I think of him as justice whose written the fewest opinions since his nomination.

The not unsurprising revelation that Kavanaugh was a misogynist frat boy, and remains an authoritarian partisan, will follow him to his grave. He's just another Thomas, a wasted opportunity.

godless hippie skank (Sanpaku), Monday, 8 October 2018 21:33 (five years ago) link

a wasted opportunity

Opportunity for whom? Wasted by whom?

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 8 October 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

I would parse that as a wasted opportunity to appoint a distinguished jurist, like a Thurgood Marshall or a Brandeis rather than a partisan hack.

There are smarter and more dignified characters on the Federalist Society rosters.

AFAICT, the main reasons Kavanaugh was selected where his opinions on US v. Nixon, that would protect Trump from indictment, and his opinion that the EPA doesn't have the authority to regulate greenhouse emissions.

His nomination means hundreds of billions for carbon emitters, and tens of millions in political contributions for those who ratified his nomination. However, he's just an outlier, like Thomas, and will never persuade any moderate justice to his positions over his presumably long future career, and like Thomas will be vilified by future generations who will be broiling and starving due to the likes of him. It's a own goal against conservatism, in the long run.

I’m starting to wonder what kind of time we’re talking about when we refer to the long run.

Scam jam, thank you ma’am (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 8 October 2018 21:57 (five years ago) link

I think the GOP can, at this point (and much earlier than this point), safely be labeled the party of no moral center. Any argument to the contrary by a republican is belied by their continued affiliation to the party which lied and cheated and dispensed with basic civility in pursuit of a stated goal which, itself, is incoherent and hollow (please square for me, as just one narrow example, how a party can be both pro-life and not vehemently anti-DeVos).

When I think of the long run, its historians sifting through the ashes, Pete Postlethwaite in The Age of Stupid style. After the collapse, conservatism will be utterly discredited, at least until the next yuga.

godless hippie skank (Sanpaku), Monday, 8 October 2018 22:10 (five years ago) link

bequeathing an utterly fucked planet to the children whose lives you so deeply cherish

on the whole, the wealthy and privileged place their trust in the ability of money to save them from most unpleasantness. he'll no doubt make certain to bequeath those kids a prep school education, social connections, and several millions in 2018 dollars, thereby fulfilling his major duty to them as he sees it.

I always assume that the self-soothing inner monologue, if any is even necessary, is along the lines of ‘my descendants tremendous wealth will enable them to buy private armies/envirodomes/orbital condos/one of the precious few flasks of antimutation serum” etc

the Supreme Court’s authority is not necessarily supreme, despite the name. Anyway, the right thing to do is pack the court, preferably with women, preferably with people who went to other schools.
