Kinda weird they are doing Bob Welch stuff given the way the band treated him in his later years

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 9 October 2018 23:22 (five years ago) link

I seem to recall in a recent-ish Fleetwood interview that he was sorry now for what went down between Welch and the band (but mainly Fleetwood) and it was all due to the litigation going on between the two camps that any of that happened in the first place. Nicks and C. McVie seem to be pretty pro-Welch when the subject arises.

pretty sad

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 11 October 2018 08:21 (five years ago) link

I guess this also means a Buckingham/Nicks reissue really isn't happening.

hey, if bridges are being burned, why not burn all the bridges? sounds like Stevie and Lindsey are having a diva-off.

Wah, I’m a millionaire rock star

calstars, Thursday, 11 October 2018 20:44 (five years ago) link

tbf sounds like Lindsey wanted to spend money on making records that nobody was going to buy, and Stevie wanted to skip releasing records in favor of touring, which makes more money. the former tortured artist, the latter boomer rockstar. explains why that last Almost Fleetwood Mac record became a Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham record.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 11 October 2018 20:50 (five years ago) link

sounds like Lindsey wanted to spend money on making records that nobody was going to buy, and Stevie wanted to skip releasing records in favor of touring

that's no doubt all true, but i think the message "Stevie never wants to be on a stage with you again" suggests the issue is much, much deeper than that (and certainly feeds into the general perception that he's not the world's nicest human).

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 11 October 2018 21:27 (five years ago) link

I wonder if Nicks (and her "people") saw the success that other bands (Eagles & Steely Dan come to mind) have had still doing big shows minus key members, and figured it could work for FM too.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 11 October 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

Dang Irving Azoff is still in the mix?

(Well, yeah)

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 11 October 2018 22:31 (five years ago) link

that stereogum article on getty images is dumb. I seriously doubt Buckingham or anyone in the band deals with that shit. That's management stuff.

akm, Friday, 12 October 2018 01:38 (five years ago) link

whoever wrote that knows that. they were making an extended (for too long, granted) joke.

alpine static, Friday, 12 October 2018 06:09 (five years ago) link

Don’t think bands of this size and longevity really hang out between shows so not sure whether clashing personalities really matter at this point.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 12 October 2018 07:05 (five years ago) link

Well obviously they do or else Buckingham wouldn't have got fired.

the word dog doesn't bark (anagram), Friday, 12 October 2018 07:07 (five years ago) link

Buckingham in that article says he lives across the street from John!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 October 2018 11:09 (five years ago) link

Give me a new Buckingham album over hearing Stevie Nicks sing live every day of the week.

DavidLeeRoth, Friday, 12 October 2018 13:07 (five years ago) link

stevie was good on American Horror Story this week.

akm, Friday, 12 October 2018 13:12 (five years ago) link

There must have been more to the Buckingham rant than people are letting on, because being fired for "smirking" seems incredibly extreme.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 12 October 2018 13:26 (five years ago) link

If I were Christine or Nicks, enduring the smirk for forty years would trigger me too.

there can be an album made and released last year by a major record label (such as that designation means much) entirely comprised of songs written and performed by Lindsey and Christine, and the rhythm section on the whole thing is McVie/Fleetwood. But you can't say that project is made by Fleetwood Mac, evidently. Christine and Lindsey toured this record, without John or Mick, but this would suggest that the four can get along reasonably (did anybody here see any of these shows? Seems to me Stevie is the asshole here…abetted by noted asshole Irving Azoff.

someone in a comment above last year said w/r/t to Stevie's contention that you can't make a records for jillions of $$$ anymore because fewer consumers buys them, belies the fact that there is no ironclad rule that Fleetwood Mac simply must spend that kind of $$$ on a recording. zillionaire musicians can record because they want to and that is what they do, and thus adjust their methods for the present climnate. or they can not.

veronica moser, Friday, 12 October 2018 13:54 (five years ago) link

Thank you! Also, the Mac audience would buy a physical album in Target.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 12 October 2018 14:10 (five years ago) link

did anybody here see any of these shows?

saw it in LA and it played out very much like a lindsey solo show with christine as a special guest. her stage presence was what you might describe as reluctant. his stage presence was very "hello LA! let me tell you a story!" my wish that 1 or 2 other LA residents might pop in for a song or two went unfulfilled.

fact checking cuz, Friday, 12 October 2018 14:10 (five years ago) link

i loved the lindsey/christine show i saw. every song sounded so lush

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 12 October 2018 14:21 (five years ago) link

the Mac audience would buy a physical album in Target.

Exactly! They have a broad fanbase that still loves spending money on them: they buy CDs, vinyl, merch, concert tickets etc.

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 12 October 2018 14:27 (five years ago) link

It's hilarious that they make a big deal about recording costs when I am sure most of them have a studio in their house.

earlnash, Friday, 12 October 2018 15:03 (five years ago) link

The issue is almost certainly that Stevie is so used to recording for a long time in expensive studios that she can only conceive of / for status’ sake tolerate working that way. (And plausibly doesn’t want to spend that much time talking to Buckingham.)

The other four are obviously able to get an album recorded somewhere, and Fleetwood has recorded two albumsworth of material in Neil Finn’s house in the last two years. (The house’s studio is a full-scale publicly hireable dealie, but still.)

My Gig: The Thin Beast (sic), Friday, 12 October 2018 15:16 (five years ago) link

The Buckingham/McVie album is a throwback to their imperial phase and Nicks must be mad not to be involved in that. Sure if it had been a full Fleetwood Mac album it would have done even better commercially.

Dan Worsley, Friday, 12 October 2018 15:25 (five years ago) link

Fuck Stevie! Bring back Bekka and Dave mason! there are exactly 3 weirdos on earth who have been pining for that lineup since 97!

veronica moser, Friday, 12 October 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link

Nicks must be mad not to be involved in that

she didn't want to be!

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 12 October 2018 15:38 (five years ago) link

the shitty thing is that not only Stevie thinks that its not Mac without her, but a constellation of biz people do too. Would somewhat clueless fans buy an album branded as Mac at Target, notice she wasn't on it and be pissed off?

veronica moser, Friday, 12 October 2018 15:43 (five years ago) link

there are nine good-to-classic albums pre-Lindsey and Stevie that i think a lot of fans barely know exist, unfortunately.

omar little, Friday, 12 October 2018 16:12 (five years ago) link

Gotta admit, I'm one of those. As I think I said on the classic albums thread, I'd call myself a fan now but I've never heard any pre-Buckingham Mac.

Then Play On is one of the great late 60s hard rock/blues records

Future Games and especially Bare Trees are wonderful albums from the Welch era.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 12 October 2018 17:35 (five years ago) link

Every Lindsey solo album is excellent FWIW. The three from the 00's might be his best solo work ever.

cosign Then Play On, that's a weird and rocking blues album

niels, Friday, 12 October 2018 21:53 (five years ago) link

I love every Lindsey record, especially Out of the Cradle on. Seen him live a few times and rocked.
