Is red dawn still a film shown to the youth as something one should live by.

Morality once meant something. & not about lowest price one could go for.

I mean the shite that goes on in the US does have a lot of repercussion worldwide so i would watch what is sanctioned, innit.

Stevolende, Friday, 5 October 2018 23:32 (five years ago) link

don't you have a brexit thread to post in? why do you keep inflicting your idle musings on us?

sleeve, Friday, 5 October 2018 23:57 (five years ago) link

I’m really warming up to Stevolende’s posting style. We should all start from the least cynical position we can stand and then, socratically, end up staring doom in the face.

also devote a line break to each of our thoughts
i guess i could talk about how much i hate republicans here
and then express some of my apparently infinite despair here

1992 was a good year for women elected to the Senate (partly because of Anita Hill I think) - Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, Patty Murray, Carol Moseley-Braun. We need to elect a lot more. The Senate should be at least 50% women

sorry stevo that started feeling a little mean, i have no problem with your posting style

i could do without the functionally inert rhetorical form of a question expressing an uncontested sentiment of your audience though

― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie),

I disagree. Not bc i dislike my bros at all but it would be better to have more women and more people in general

Trϵϵship, Saturday, 6 October 2018 03:03 (five years ago) link

mods please only allow new regs from women

Murkowski has emerged from this with some credibility

kind of, sort of. They had one vote to give, so she got it, one less Republican senator and she would be a yes.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 6 October 2018 03:16 (five years ago) link

yeah you're probably right

it's all pretty cynical isn't it

Dan S, Saturday, 6 October 2018 03:19 (five years ago) link

we need at least 50% women progressives / democrats in the Senate

and in ilx

Dan S, Saturday, 6 October 2018 03:25 (five years ago) link

obviously r/n abolishing the senate would just expose us to the gerrymandered house but otherwise i might make "abolish the senate" my "where's the tax returns?"

though tbh if it weren't egregiously spammy i would just get on ilx every morning and post this:

My greatest fear right now is being unable to find a job outside of the US in my painfully cramped subfield. I can't think of a single Western nation I loathe nearly as much. Even fucking Italy and Austria strike me as less pernicious at the moment due to their limited power.

pomenitul, Saturday, 6 October 2018 10:19 (five years ago) link

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the fact that there hasn't been a May 68-like general strike all across the country since Trump got elected goes to show how strong the tacit consensus is ('this is a tad excessive, but still acceptable'). The resistance is there, but its numbers are frankly pathetic. The fact of the matter is that Trump represents the democratic will of the American people at the moment; he really does stand for what the majority thinks is tolerable, even though it disagrees with some of the 'finer' points. This wouldn't be a big deal to me if the epidemic were under quarantine, but the US is currently empowering fascism all over the world.

pomenitul, Saturday, 6 October 2018 10:45 (five years ago) link

I'm not blaming any of you personally, btw. I just happen to be more convinced than ever that most human beings are ultimately kind of alright with fascism, and not just in the US.

pomenitul, Saturday, 6 October 2018 10:48 (five years ago) link

I kinda think almost everybody thinks that fascism is totally bad and unacceptable. Unless... And it turns out a lot of people have really surprisingly low thresholds for when fascism is the least bad option. The 'Never Trumpers' now saying that they've been driven towards Trump because of Kavanaugh would be laughable, if it wasn't both so despairing and so utterly predictable.

Frederik B, Saturday, 6 October 2018 10:54 (five years ago) link

It's as if the word 'fascism' were awful and unforgivable but not the thing itself. Same with 'racism', 'sexism', etc.
