so Manchin's calculus is to vote the way Collins votes because her yes vote gives him cover to vote yes, right? so they will both vote yes

(apparently Graham has already "announced" that she will be a yes vote)

Dan S, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:53 (five years ago) link

So he would get on the court thanks to a Dem. Who Trump and the GOP will still campaign against.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

yr math is off there

Οὖτις, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

if Collins is a yes, Manchin's vote doesn't matter

Οὖτις, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

ah, I see. so he could vote yes but then he has cover to say he was not the deciding vote.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link

martinis at five at Soto Laird.

I wish, sincerely. We'll be raising a glass on the west coast.

sleeve, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link

phew. the jury did the right thing on Van Dyke.

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

The more I think about this the more I suspect Collins is leaning no? She’s deliberately positioned herself as the deciding vote, why grandstand like this if you’re gonna vote party line? It’s not like the choice is either Kav or some liberal judge...it’s him or someone who will vote the same way without the baggage.

frogbs, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

fingers crossed

sleeve, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:02 (five years ago) link

still

"why grandstand like this if you’re gonna vote party line?"

she had lunch with McConnell today. is she angling to get something from him?

Dan S, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

a fun little detail - the Montana senator who has a wedding to go to this weekend (Daines) has been offered the services of a private plane back to DC to vote on Kavanaugh. the private plane is owned by Rep. Gianforte (the guy who physically assaulted a Guardian reporter and then was voted into office the next day by the highly intelligent citizens of Montana)

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:04 (five years ago) link

ew, that is a good detail

sleeve, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:04 (five years ago) link

Reportedly Collins currently has a police detail. One benefit of waiting till the last minute is minimizing the number of people who want to kill her before she has a chance to beat the retreat.

any ILXers live in Maine?

she's placed herself on this pedestal

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:07 (five years ago) link

she's up now

Dan S, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

i didn't know susan collins was basically emo philips

maximum derek borchardt (crüt), Friday, 5 October 2018 19:09 (five years ago) link

this doesn't sound like it's going in a good direction

maximum derek borchardt (crüt), Friday, 5 October 2018 19:09 (five years ago) link

she had lunch with McConnell today. is she angling to get something from him?

Yeah, she might be stupid enough to try that after he already screwed her once (ACA vote).

grawlix (unperson), Friday, 5 October 2018 19:10 (five years ago) link

ok, it's officially done

Dan S, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:11 (five years ago) link

she had the fucking nerve to say "dark money" in association with anti-Kav forces

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 5 October 2018 19:11 (five years ago) link

So that's that?

jmm, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:11 (five years ago) link

any ILXers live in Maine?

One of my best friends is from Maine. Trust me when I say the farther he can keep his family from the ballot box the better.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:12 (five years ago) link

Never mind

frogbs, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:12 (five years ago) link

My current roomie is from Maine and has otons of family still there. He seems to think she will be voted out now (2020). I am not sure of that.

Yerac, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:13 (five years ago) link

242 years wasn't a bad run, all told.

Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 October 2018 19:13 (five years ago) link

just GET TO IT, collins

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:13 (five years ago) link

fuck

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

Is Collins an idiot? Sometimes I wonder if she or really any of these senators truly understand anything more than what it takes to get elected. Laws, news reports, controversies, the effects of their votes ... sometimes they act like they live in a secluded vacuum.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

the audacity to talk about dark money, fuck you

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:14 (five years ago) link

I guess 240 is probably more accurate and feels like a slightly neater number.

Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Friday, 5 October 2018 19:15 (five years ago) link

damn it fuck this shit

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 5 October 2018 19:15 (five years ago) link

she's babbling about Kav's opinions on the DC court supports her theory that he'll protect pre-existing conditions

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 5 October 2018 19:15 (five years ago) link

hey everyone, she's read federalist no. 76 - she's given this issue deep thought

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

xxxp there's no necessity to understand anything else in order to perform the job, just depends on how you're placed in the political situation. some people need to understand, some don't.

j., Friday, 5 October 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

lol this dumb ass just admitted that Kav and Roberts will keep precedents but gut them neatly

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 5 October 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it's one thing to support him, it's another to claim that all his most controversial positions are benign and ultimately to the benefit of the little guy.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

xxp like, kavanaugh's assurance that something is settled law - surely she understands something more than that about how the court makes and tears down laws? but who knows

j., Friday, 5 October 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link

I am wavering between i)nothing in life mattering and ii) feeling good that I haven't been paranoid my entire life about how terrible people really are.

Yerac, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link

Like, Collins is babbling righteously, but disingenuously ignoring all sorts of shit. Like Garland.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:18 (five years ago) link

silver lining: this seems likely to dull any supposed right wing voter push, now that they got their guy. and more likely to fan the flames of a left wing November blue wave.

i'll take what i can get, though even that i'm not sure about.

omar little, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:18 (five years ago) link

putting herself in the spotlight like this was a really stupid idea if this was the end game

iatee, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:18 (five years ago) link

loooooool

according to collins, kavanaugh's previous support for measures to protect the president from prosecution while in office means that believes that the president does not CURRENTLY have protection from prosecution while in office, therefore we don't have to worry about kavanaugh siding with trump on such a case

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 October 2018 19:18 (five years ago) link

Susan Collins castigating everyone for opposing the nominee before he was even named, which is, of course what McConnell did immediately after Scalia’s death.

All these assholes, from Flake to Collins, they seem to recognize that we live in remarkable, unprecedented times, then they vote and operate as if we are not teetering on the brink.
