yeah i think anyone expecting consistency is... looking for the wrong thing. these things always read best in bumper digests. they're the original bingewatch object.

i will say i am a complete mark for jaimes' nancy. it is pretty much all i want from the internet right now, a new nancy strip to read every day.
i do also feel that setting up people into jaimes/gilchrist camps is a false dichotomy. it's actually people who likes olivia jaimes' nancy vs. horrible human beings, and i don't have any particular evidence gilchrist is a horrible human being.

gilchrist's comics are so visually unappealing and gross i can barely stand to look at them. the guy makes bil keane look like chris ware.

I mean, unless you think "got fired from his sinecure on a legacy strip after sexually assaulting and (separately) beating up his assistant, before firing her over Facebook, and then posting pictures of them together on the 'gram captioned with long incoherent rants about how she's going to be federally indicted based on information he has given to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and how he'd sacrificed so much to make her into a great artist, and thought of her as a daughter" is outweighed by him also including prayer emoji hands and explaining that he does whatever God tells him every morning

i think that's in one of the pauline epistles. i can't remember if it's one of the pseudepigraphica, though.

Are there going to be print collections of James' Nancy strips or am I misunderstanding the banter upthread? Because I think these strips are awesome but I basically forget to read them unless this thread is bumped

I think the print collections being discussed are are all vintage Bushmiller stuff. All the Jaimes strips can be found on the gocomics Nancy page.

Starting my next project---a graphic biography of my cartoon hero, "Nancy" creator, Ernie Bushmiller. Peeling back the layers and finding a nuanced, complex man whose life paralelled the evolution of comics in New York City from the Nineteen teens to the Seventies. Who knows, I may even uncover the identities of Sluggo's parents.

Why did you decide to lead off your run on the comic with the strip about Nancy eating corn bread?I went back and I looked at the end of [previous “Nancy” cartoonist] Guy Gilchrist’s run. Nancy as a character had drifted from where I envision her, in that the Nancy I know and love is a total jerk and also gluttonous and also has big feelings and voraciously consumes her world. And I was like, I need to do a character-reset week. Just kinda being like, Here’s who Nancy’s gonna be right now. And also, I love corn bread. So, that’s it. That’s the reason. I wanted to reset expectations and pay homage to my favorite food.

Alexikakos about 10 hours ago To Olivia’s fans. This is how your hero, Ernie Bushmiller (whose style Olivia is said by many of you to be emulating), had Nancy visualizing herself sometime in her 20’s.Can you say “Betty Boop?” https://www.gocomics.com/nancy/1948/11/06 Get with the program your fans seem to think you’re following, Olivia, or finally admit you don’t have a clue what you’re doing and quit.P.S.If the person using the avatar “Olivia Jaimes” is you, Olivia, you’ll have to get yourself a “Creator” designation (example below) before I believe it. a couple of months ago I was bored at work and went down a rabbit hole of reading comments on classic Nancy cartoons. there is definitely a community of weirdos who are deeply involved in yuks practice. this was my favorite:

From a recent TCJ interview with underground comix legend Bill "Zippy the Pinhead" Griffith:
Can you give us a preview of your next project?I'll just say that it's a deeply researched biography of Nancy cartoonist Ernie Bushmiller--and the cartooning worlds he lived among in New York from the late 1910s to the 1970s--helped along considerably by interviews with Ernie's still-living friend Jim Carlsson and the generosity of Mark Newgarden in giving me access to interviews and research he and Paul Karasick did for How to Read Nancy. I'll just add a line of mine from an introduction I wrote for a Nancy anthology: "Peanuts tells you what it's like to be a child. Nancy tells you what it's like to be a comic strip."
