That NYT story is pretty thorough, and shouldn't be hand-waved away with "all rich people do this." There are a bunch of straight-up illegal activities detailed in the story, though mostly (AFAICT) past the statute of limitations.

I’m sure he continued to do similar things in recent years

You've convinced me, he shouldn't be president.

it definitely does answer the question of how someone so incredibly inept and moronic could have any sort of "business" success whatsoever. I always assumed this guy had *some* sort of business acumen back in the 80's

But a lawyer for Mr. Trump, Charles J. Harder, provided a written statement on Monday, one day after The Times sent a detailed description of its findings. “The New York Times’s allegations of fraud and tax evasion are 100 percent false, and highly defamatory,”

so much of his defense for all the various scandals going on amounts to "nuh uh."

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 21:28 (five years ago) link

Oh I missed that. nvm.

What my father really gave me is a good (great) brain, motivation and the benefit of his experience-unlike the haters and losers (lazy!).

I haven't read the story but I know of one particular reporter who's about to connect a lot of dots this week

One story I'm looking back at today: this @propublica story about @realDonaldTrump selling condos to Eric Trump in 2016 for much below market price in April 2016. https://t.co/MMz4rBkyEI https://t.co/iMkFgYmAFZ

T or F: if, during his second hearing, brett kavanaugh would have just admitted that he drank way too much during his youth and did a bunch of things he regretted doing, he'd be sailing toward a confirmation right now despite the whole him being a sexual assaulter thing

Seriously, one of the creepier parts about one of Jeffrey Toobin's recent books about SCOTUS was learning that Thomas kept a framed photo of a former clerk and her female companion on his desk; Toobin adduced it as an example of his warmth.

"he drank way too much during his youth and did a bunch of things he regretted doing" is kind of the narrative the Dems are trying to push though

still I agree that it would've been a vastly preferable strategy, given the sheer amount of "holy shit Brett K lied about a lot on Thursday" takes I've seen these last couple days. the "he said she said" thing doesn't work when one party obviously has something to hide.

occurs to me to mention that I actually organized a post-HS-graduation beach week for a dozen friends of mine. Of course it was a completely teetotal LAN party at a beach rental, with parental chaperones. It was a lot of fun!

is Beach Week really less of a "thing" outside greater DC? Would've assumed it was popular anywhere within driving distance of a beach

a letter was sent to trump, too?

The substance in the president’s letter is suspected to be ricin and it’s believed to be connected to the Pentagon letter, I’m told.

Huckleberry's gone entirely round the bend

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) released a statement on Tuesday calling on President Donald Trump to renominate alleged sexual abuser Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court should his current nomination fail.

Graham opened by sharing his admiration and empathy for Kavanaugh and his family, imploring other senators to “not quit on him,” before diving into the senator’s suggestion to the president.

“I believe Judge Kavanaugh will be confirmed to the Supreme Court very soon,” Graham said. “However, if his nomination were to fall short, I would encourage President Trump to re-nominate Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. It would ― in effect ― be appealing the Senate’s verdict directly to the American people.”

Graham also noted that the midterm elections are “only 35 days away” and “a new group of senators” might view Kavanaugh’s nomination “very differently after hearing from the voters in their states.”

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 22:36 (five years ago) link

lol, please listen to graham and renominate kavanaugh if he doesn't get confirmed, that's a fantastic idea

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

I did think that Kavanaugh's frequent protesting about the fact that he went to Georgetown and Yale hurt his case a lot, since every truly crazy party I've been to during my HS/college years was at a rich/privileged school like that. the house parties my buddies threw in high school were mostly centered around kitchen table drinking games and a single case of Busch Light.

frogbs, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

hell, I went to one party in grad school and when they served Absolut and Welch's cranberry juice I wept with gratitude.

come on...a football player at a prep school involved with heavy drinking and sexual assault? that dog don't hunt.

omar little, Tuesday, 2 October 2018 22:44 (five years ago) link

My friends who went to privileged DC area private schools have been mocking the guy relentlessly, right down to Mark Judge's choice of hideout.

I went to G’town Prep and can confirm it was a huge deal there. My move was to tell parents I was going and use that time to attend Dead shows. Stoner ftw.
