John Oliver pointed out the farcical idea of Kavanaugh pere having a tradition of keeping Calendars to relate these old family stories over Xmas from. & the tradition being all of 4 years old at the oldest.
Oh & Kavanaugh sr being sat behind his son in the courtroom. So the idea of bnostalgia for this perfect time when his dad was till around is a little odd to say the least.

Stevolende, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:15 (five years ago) link

Anyway, I think congress still needs to ratify the deal if I understand and that will most probably after the midterms so who knows what happens to USMike D over the next 2-3 months.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:20 (five years ago) link

from the press conference the other day:

REPORTER: But are you going to notify Congress you’re pulling out of NAFTA.

TRUMP: What we’re probably going to do is call it the “USMC,” like the United States Marine Corps, which I love. General [John] Kelly likes it even more. Where is General Kelly? He likes that. USMC. Which would be US, Mexico, Canada. But it will probably or possibly be just USM. It will be United States and Mexico.

the USMC. the United States Mexico Canada. great name

Karl Malone, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:28 (five years ago) link

what's great about it is that the name lets everyone know exactly which countries are involved. not like that pesky North American free trade agreement, an enigma wrapped in a hot dog

Karl Malone, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

One thing for sure, Guatemala will never join the USMC.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:30 (five years ago) link

i thought the parties assigned their own committee memberships and leaders.

No, no. The Republican would become the ranking member.

why can't we just call it the United States Act

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:38 (five years ago) link

Thing is almost the same as it used to be and dude campaigned on pulling away from it altogether.

If the goal was to end NAFTA, it's a failure for Trump. If the goal was to threaten to pull away in order to extract concessions from Canada, it's less of a failure.

The nexus of the crisis (Sund4r), Monday, 1 October 2018 15:40 (five years ago) link

Trump doesn't have goals, he has feelings

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link

Dairy market seems to be the only concessions and as I said in the Canadian thread, it looks like the opening will be quite lesser than the one initially planned in the TPP. Steel and aluminium still an unknown.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 15:43 (five years ago) link

Patent protection for biologics and copyright extension both seem significant too.

The nexus of the crisis (Sund4r), Monday, 1 October 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

But yeah, we're basically going over the same points on both threads.

The nexus of the crisis (Sund4r), Monday, 1 October 2018 15:47 (five years ago) link

Ah, but if it is renamed USMC, then NAFTA has disappeared. Voila!

lmao they're not even trying to make this look like a real investigation

“I thought it was going to be an investigation,” a Yale classmate of Brett Kavanaugh and Deborah Ramirez said, of the F.B.I.’s renewed inquiry. “But instead it seems it’s just an alibi for Republicans to vote for Kavanaugh.” https://t.co/H24YpATyAD

frogbs, Monday, 1 October 2018 16:20 (five years ago) link

xxxxpost Patent protection for health care products and copyright extension are significant, but they don't seem significant to Trudeau cause really they were barely discussed. That these things weren't significant to Trudeau is another debate in the Canadian thread yeah and I agree with you that these lost might be tough to swallow. The big five things Trudeau cared about were: sunset clause, chapter 19, cars, steel/aluminium and dairy. Also, Mexico is still in the deal which is a big plus for both Mexico and Canada. Steel/aluminium seems to be the major concession so far, by virtue of not being resolved.

Anyway, the US are the US, almost ten times the population and economy of Canada, that the status quo was extensively preserved can't be a win for Trump, who promised so much more about the 'bad deal' that was NAFTA.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 1 October 2018 16:23 (five years ago) link

I hope AMLO refuses to support any deal with Mexico that doesn’t include mutual right to live and work permanently in the other country. Partly because I want to move to Mexico.

They supplemented this article with a picture of an old Yale yearbook showing Kavanaugh’s grandfather. Apparently Kav didn’t bust his butt to get in, but had the benefit of being a legacy admission.

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 October 2018 17:02 (five years ago) link

he was a legacy: His grandfather, Everett Edward Kavanaugh, also went to Yale for undergrad, as this yearbook shows.

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 October 2018 17:07 (five years ago) link

So Trump just went on about having seen some unnamed Democratic Senator in compromising situations and seemed to be threatening to reveal it if this person keeps going after Kavanaugh.

I cannot wait until one week from today, when we get to find out exactly how much of his own money pharma scumbag Bob Hugin threw down the sewer trying to unseat Bob Menendez, who I freely admit is a crook but who is not going anywhere.
