Wow this is fantastic. The singer sounds like a cross between David Tibet and the guy from God Bullies.

2 bonus tracks on the 'Luxus' edition: https://a-forest-of-stars.bandcamp.com/album/grave-mounds-and-grave-mistakes-luxus

Excellent song titles too.

ArchCarrier, Friday, 28 September 2018 13:14 (five years ago) link

yeah he's played up the David Tibet thing this time around. you get the real thing in a couple of weeks too!

My perspective from a long-term fan is that they often come close to self-parody but certain tracks are still pretty amazing (Tombward Bound, fuuuuck)

New Horrendous reminds me of Human era Death.

Not that it sounds like it but in its ambitions.

Of course the irony being that it's not forward thinking anymore but hey.. it had a good beat qnd I can mosh to it

Bandcamp is donating proceeds from today's sales to the Voting Rights Project. I picked up Irreversible Mechanism's Immersion, along with a bunch of jazz and avant-garde stuff.

I know nobody in this thread will care, but Machine Head are breaking up - basically, everybody but Robb quit on Wednesday. But they're going to finish out their current tour. If the show I saw in 2015 is any indication, it'll be a blast.

I first saw them live in 1999; Robb was wearing a tracksuit and had cornrows. I saw them about a half dozen times after that, including headlining dates in NYC, a show on the Mayhem Festival tour, an opening slot for Metallica, and finally the 2015 show I mentioned, which was a no-opening-act "An Evening With..." performance that ran well over two hours. They were fun to work with at Roadrunner, too, and while I didn't like their latest album much, i still listen to the four before it from time to time.

grawlix (unperson), Saturday, 29 September 2018 01:12 (five years ago) link

I don't spend a lot of time listening to Machine Head these days, but there was definitely a time when they seemed to me like the definitive metal band of that moment.

glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 29 September 2018 14:36 (five years ago) link

Burn My Eyes is a fantastic record, the drop after that was huge unfortunately.

Siegbran, Saturday, 29 September 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link

I saw one of those long 2015 shows, too. They were pretty awesome.

I'm not big on power metal, but amateurs should check out Immortal Guardian's Age of Revolution:

pomenitul, Sunday, 30 September 2018 09:05 (five years ago) link

shit I've dug of late

the aforementioned Satan and Voivods

the new Pyrexia (now with 25% less murderer)
the new Monstrosity
the new Pig Destroyer (tho admittedly, it's not one that I'm revisiting a lot)
new The Skull (heavy af)
new Horrendous

need to wait for the right moment to try the new Anaal Nathrakh

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Sunday, 30 September 2018 14:03 (five years ago) link

The new Thou album is absolutely terrifying.

tangenttangent, Sunday, 30 September 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link

New Ragana/Thou split is great too, though I think the Ragana side is the better of the two

There's a new Behemoth coming I see?

Siegbran, Monday, 1 October 2018 23:17 (five years ago) link

Anyone heard Argonavis's Passing the Igneous Maw (awesome title btw)? Murky, blackened death/doom with the occasional horn chorale. Opens with an almost subliminal a capella piece, closes with straight-up chamber music. Really good shit:

The new High On Fire (out tomorrow) has a nine-minute song and a ten-minute song. I am enraptured.

grawlix (unperson), Friday, 5 October 2018 01:42 (five years ago) link

can't fuckin wait. hoping I can finally see them again on that weird bill they're on, but my November is in flux atm

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 5 October 2018 01:45 (five years ago) link

I like the HoF more than I liked the previous two albums. it's mega. also speedier, like their older material

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Saturday, 6 October 2018 14:47 (five years ago) link

new Behemoth feels like the album prior to a major pivot. small things, like clean vocals, less extreme moments, more choral moments, ambient passages.

I think I like it tho!

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Saturday, 6 October 2018 14:54 (five years ago) link

First listen and I agree the new HoF sounds more like old HoF which isn't a bad thing at all. It's got more weight to it and I think "man that's almost a Slayer riff" less often.

DEATH PUPPET (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 7 October 2018 01:29 (five years ago) link

i know people revere HOF and they're a badass heavy band and i got lots of respect for Pike but more and more i just find their albums to be a chore to get through..

it does! totally rips shit anyway

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 8 October 2018 16:24 (five years ago) link

kinda think its transitional quality is part of why it's so good, songs at times feel an instant away from shapeshifting into something different, and you can feel them really going for it

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 8 October 2018 16:29 (five years ago) link

I've been listening to Sárr's Ávitun a lot this week. A solo EP by Þórir from Nyss that came out in April.

ArchCarrier, Monday, 8 October 2018 18:31 (five years ago) link

Would you kind dudes help a confused old man out? Is your man Nergal from Behemoth a racist? (I've seen a photo of him dressed as an SS officer and I know his name used to be Holocausto and obviously neither is a good look but is there some kind of screed where he nails his colours to the mast - some damning thing he's said that I'm not aware of? I mean, is he actually a card carrying racist or just a bit of spanner with poor judgement?) I've googled it and the first thing that comes up says he is because literally all black metal is racist, so that's not much help. I can't keep up with it all, tbh.

Doran, Monday, 8 October 2018 23:23 (five years ago) link

oh god if so i am not aware of it

Wasn't the Nazi photo from a movie he was in where he played a Nazi?

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 00:48 (five years ago) link

Apols about the Nazi costume thing... I was just googling around trying to find out what the score was. Fair play on that score, didn't know he'd been acting.

The football thing... it's pretty ambiguous. Feels a bit dog-whistle-y maybe? Definitely a dickish thing to post. Not really the smoking gun I thought I was going to find either - or is there more text?

Anyway, thanks.

I've been listening to Sárr's Ávitun a lot this week. A solo EP by Þórir from Nyss that came out in April.

I auditioned the last track and it had a really weird psychoacoustic effect on me, and wondering if anyone else had the same reaction to this (or any other particular) piece of music?

I have some tinnitus, not terrible, but basically I carry my own noise floor wherever I go. Playing the song was like having my noise floor raised significantly - like someone had identified key frequencies that ring in my ear, and boosted them (and only them) a lot. Really viscerally unpleasant.

I listen to TONS of extremely noisy shit and never had this experience before.

(Stephin Merritt has suggested strongly that the Magnetic Fields album "Distortion" was mixed to tigger his hyperacusis, but not sure that's the same)

summervillain, Wednesday, 10 October 2018 14:30 (five years ago) link

Wow, that is weird. Do you have the same effect with the other two tracks? I don't hear a lot of difference in the way they're mixed.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 11 October 2018 09:26 (five years ago) link

Meant to post this earlier - but Satan were pretty damn good in Chicago this past week. Doomsday Clock/Twenty Twenty Five one-two punch was sweet. I took a buddy who had never heard 'em before, who's not much of a metalhead, but is a huge Iron Maiden fan, and he loved 'em and bought Cruel Magic at the merch table. Was happy to bring them a new fan. Brian Ross was good fun, and his banter was often hilarious!

BlackIronPrison, Sunday, 14 October 2018 17:19 (five years ago) link

New Terrorizer is interesting.

It's basically a Sandoval blastbeat showcase like World Downfall but the music isn't that style, it's grind but not the punky kind.

Not sure how I feel yet but the Monstrosity boys do a good job. It's not like the 2nd or 3rd Terrorizer albs either

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Sunday, 14 October 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

I liked those two Terrorizer albums that were basically Resistant Culture albums with Sandoval on drums. Checking out the new one now.

New Entropia album sneaked out at the end of September while I wasn't paying attention.

I absolutely loves their super-heavy psychedelic halucinations of what black metal could be on Ufonaut which came out in 2016 and am looking forward to exploring this one. First two songs do nothing to dissuade me from endorsing the new one!

I somehow missed that Moss Upon The Skull had signed to I, Voidhanger but they did and here's their album:

Slightly proggy, gallopy and riffy death metal. Found them through Bandcamp a year or two ago and love their stuff.

Stumbled across this video of Gojira performing "Global Warming" (a song they never play live) in the studio; it's pretty great, and reminds me I haven't listened to them in a while.
