I own the action figure and I demand hardcover reprints

People ask why I always ride in the front seat - it’s because I get there faster

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 01:10 (five years ago) link

Super hyper mega classic

I no longer have the action figure :(

Burden's comics are some of the only ones to make me IRL LOL (see also: Kupperman, surely someone else but no one I can think of immediately). Second the call for some nice hardcovers because what are they even waiting for.

Mummenschanz in a Metal Mood (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 03:14 (five years ago) link

yeah any issue of fc, like groo, always has at least one moment that will make me laugh out loud.

Burden was consistently one of the nicest con-going pros I met in my active fanboy days, and he still is apparently -- I sent my copy of the Gumby Summer Fun Special with my daughter to Dragoncon last year to get him and Art Adams to sign, and she said Burden was a sweetheart and Adams was surly. I wish I hadn't lost my copies of the Atlanta Fantasy Fair program books that had the first Carrot appearances.

They're waiting for you to not wait six years after publication so that Used - Like New copies are going for $140-$350 on Amazon?

the first maybe 16 or so issues, unimpeachably classic, never bettered, the dead dog jumped up and flew around the fucking room!
burden then attempting at great length to strike franchise gold, not so classic
and then the weird attempts to make comics with the least amount of drawing possible, dud
but collabos with my household god Rick Geary - classic

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 15:40 (five years ago) link

Classic up to #24 imo. (I enjoy the Turtles crossover myself, but it's downhill after that.)

I'm not sure you get how Kickstarter works, especially for 60-year-old men with no resources.

totally with you on hardcover reprints, really warming to see the love here for this

also wish they would re-print silent hill, these limited runs killing me

montoya (Ross), Saturday, 6 October 2018 16:13 (five years ago) link

didn’t y’all find, with the paperbacks, that less is more? The concentrated dose of weirdness between colour covers in a single issue was really undermined by being stuck between 200 other black & white pages of the same stuff.

I baste my thigh, gent (sic), Saturday, 6 October 2018 16:58 (five years ago) link

no

El Tomboto, Saturday, 6 October 2018 17:20 (five years ago) link

that given, do you really expect to enjoy it any more in books that are exactly the same as ones you already own, except heavier?

I baste my thigh, gent (sic), Saturday, 6 October 2018 18:10 (five years ago) link

Yes

Nice paper makes everything better

El Tomboto, Saturday, 6 October 2018 18:13 (five years ago) link

the entirety of Marvel Comics' trade program disproves that handily

the world of Flaming Carrot is a low-rent milieu, served by a low-rent presentation. Bob Burden cannot, by reasonable metrics, draw well, and his post-bar inkings would not be improved by high-quality stock, even if the original art were available to shoot from. (And we have three decades of evidence that Preney was better able to reproduce even Gerhard's hatching or Campbell's zip collages on newsprint than other printers have been able to on white paper using Preney's own negs.)

Shy Betting Mega Hit (sic), Saturday, 6 October 2018 18:24 (five years ago) link

cannot draw well

nb that I would absolutely hang framed pages from FCs #11-23 on my wall if I had money and walls

Shy Betting Mega Hit (sic), Saturday, 6 October 2018 18:26 (five years ago) link

El OTM nice paper does make everything better!

it feels really nice to hold and look at in our digital times, fwiw

montoya (Ross), Sunday, 7 October 2018 18:49 (five years ago) link

xp yep lots of great art in FC.

El OTM nice paper does make everything better!

seriously, what examples of white-paper-hardbacks of material originally done by Preney are improvements?

Shy Betting Mega Hit (sic), Sunday, 7 October 2018 19:47 (five years ago) link

I wonder what you think you're adding to this discussion

El Tomboto, Sunday, 7 October 2018 20:35 (five years ago) link

If nothing else, sic has informed me that I already own the Flaming Carrot collections, and now that I'm no longer ignorant of that fact I can finally stop pining for new Flaming Carrot collections.

Werther Down the Spiral (Old Lunch), Sunday, 7 October 2018 20:40 (five years ago) link

xpost a starry-eyed, optimistic belief in the power of facts to provide better answers to OL's questions than wistful fantasies might?

five months pass...

Flaming Carrot Comics Omnibus goes on sale September 18, 2019, and is available for pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and at your local comic shop.

Awesome!!

This whopping 416-page paperback volume will collect Flaming Carrot #1-2, 4-11, 25-27 and will retail for $24.99.

Aweso...wait, what?

WAS ACTING A FOOL AND FELL ON GRILL (Old Lunch), Friday, 29 March 2019 21:33 (five years ago) link

I guess maybe that's just volume one. Dark Horse organizes their collections very strangely sometimes.

WAS ACTING A FOOL AND FELL ON GRILL (Old Lunch), Friday, 29 March 2019 21:35 (five years ago) link

#25-27 is the Turtles crossover, so it's extra weird to jump forward to that when it could boost sales on a later volume

especially when the press release doesn't even mention it, or the Todd McFarlane cover on #27

steven, soda jerk (sic), Friday, 29 March 2019 21:40 (five years ago) link

iirc #15-24 is the strongest run and includes the Mysterymen appearances, it'd be in character for Burden to put out a Mysterymen omnibus with barely any Mysterymen in it

steven, soda jerk (sic), Friday, 29 March 2019 21:46 (five years ago) link

At least the inclusion of the TMNT crossover bodes well wrt these being fairly comprehensive collections. I generally assume with reprints that any cross-pollinated of properties are gonna be perpetually consigned to the back issue bins (see: every goddamn ROM appearance ever).

WAS ACTING A FOOL AND FELL ON GRILL (Old Lunch), Friday, 29 March 2019 21:54 (five years ago) link

#4-11 is a mighty FC run so it’s still tempting but dang what a weird tracklisting.

The series gets progressively worse from the point the mysterymen appear imo.

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Friday, 29 March 2019 22:19 (five years ago) link

I dunno, Dark Horse recently recollected their entire Conan library into omnibi just before they lost the license to Marvel and the numbering was similarly inscrutable at first blush (I think they organized everything according to story chronology) but they did eventually circle back around to the material they initially skipped.

Past experience would suggest that it doesn't bode anything. the 90s Dark Horse collections ran:

Volume 1: #1-3 of the Aardvark-Vanaheim series, plus a short from Anything Goes, plus two stories from Cerebus, plus one short from A-V In 3-D, in 2-D.

The stories from Visions #1-4 and the original Flaming Carrot #1 were not reprinted in this or later issues, nor were the cover and story from Greed (featuring Milk & Cheese's first appearance; Dorkin was briefly Burden's assistant at the time.) None of these, nor the Aardvark-Vanaheim stories, nor the TCJ, Inc. story are listed as being in this omnibus, so it seems premature to expect them.

Volume 2: #4-11 of the A-V/Renegade series plus a new story.

I wouldn't expect the new story to be in the new omnibus, without it being listed.

Visions #5-9 apparently included new Carrot stories, too, but I dunno if they were reprinted in the comic series, or are floating loose in the world.

Volume 3: (infuriatingly titled Flaming Carrot's Greatest Hits): #12-17 from the Renegade series, #18 from the Dark Horse series, a few bits from Dark Horse #20 and #24 and maybe some new stuff?

Volume 4: #19-24 of the Dark Horse series and a new intro by everyone's pal Jim Shooter

Volume 5, seven years later in 2006, jumped to collecting the internally numbered #33-36, which were published in 2004-05 as a new #1-4 from Desperado through Image.

In 2008, Burden self-published hardcover 10th Anniversary reprints of the first two 1997 collections, with new introductions and revised art and script, and a new C21st Carrot story. Good luck guessing whether the omnibus will feature original or revised versions, or the new story.

In 2011, Dark Horse did a 500-copy print run of the four Bob Burden's Original Mysterymen Present issues from 1999, five years after the last regular Carrot issue.

In 2012, Burden Kickstartered another "super deluxe" hardcover reprint of the first 1997 collection.

Issues #28 through the internally numbered "32", which include Herbie and Reid Fleming crossovers are not necessarily any closer to reprinting even if the TMNT ones are. The artwork for the other TMNT crossover is probably owned by Nickelodeon now, so I wouldn't expect it's easy to reprint, not to mention colour being more expensive. I also wouldn't hold my breath on issues #24-27 meaning anything one way or another for the 1990s Dark Horse Annual or the 1998 Thrilling Visions paperback or the 2007ish Image Special or any of the self-published 1990s-00s issues and ashcans, or the 2013 Thrilling Visions 2. Or the Junior Carrot patrol miniseries by Rick Geary, which may not have had any input from Burden iirc.)

there are three mistakes in there bcz the ILX text box is too small, you can have a no-prize if you spot them all

I just realized I don’t have the junior carrot patrol stuff. Drat. I am something of a Geary completist.
