We missed out on the subscription meat package they’ve been pushing over at Gizmodo & co. It’s some meat, plus two pounds of ground beef! Be the meat chef!

three weeks pass...

What if a Serial Killer delivered a package to your doorstep each month?

@ Hunt A Killer, we provide the answer to that question...

We send out monthly packages, and each one builds upon the other. Over time, you collect the evidence, build your theories and, if you can, solve the mystery before the fictional killer strikes again....

fwiw I decided to do a trial of both stitch fix and trunk club bc I'm sick of clothes shopping both in store and online. Will report back.

Should be a service that orders all such boxes on your behalf, sends most shit back, and sends you the best of.

Tart Prepper (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 21:05 (four years ago) link

maybe could also add a pouch of clean urine to the "best of" box for your cocaine habit

7 shallow boxes of cat litter sent every monday. Each box would be biodegradable and embedded with Zanzibar gem seeds. You'd take yesterday's litter box to work to throw away in one of several hundred pots placed in the office, therby planting another beautiful zanzibar gem for the office.

Tart Prepper (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 21:15 (four years ago) link

I don't really foresee sticking with them as I don't need that much clothing. It's more like maybe an alternative approach to trying to get the 1-2 sweaters 2 pairs of pants and 2 shirts I could use this fall without just looking at the same three sites/brands again.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 21:19 (four years ago) link

ok just saw my trunk club preview and already kinda thinking about dropping it. I guess it's just a bunch of full price stuff from nordstrom? The stuff they picked is fine but def on the pricey side -- I've never paid over like $80 for twill pants and they're suggesting pairs that cost $145 and $190. A lot of this stuff will also probably be available marked down in the winter sale in two months anyway, so I may just pass. Also they were going to include a pair of those dumbass Cole Haan spaceman dress shoes.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 21:58 (four years ago) link

yeah, i think the trick there is you need a nordstrom's credit card. they waive the stylist fee but still charge you $190 for the pants.

sarahell, Wednesday, 9 October 2019 03:22 (four years ago) link

I feel like there's such a tiny chance they'd fit right! Every month would be an exercise to trooping to the post office to return 80% of it and hoping what got sent back was actually the right size.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 9 October 2019 11:03 (four years ago) link

Signed up for Birchbox earlier in the year and have been pleased with it. Wanted to get an overview of the grooming products out there, so sampler-sized products fit the bill. A handful have had excessive cologne or chemical (like Ajax) smells that I dislike, i.e. one clay deodorant that domintated my nose during the day, so they get tossed ASAP. Some repetition over the months, getting the same Jack Black or Kiehl's product twice, but not annoying.

Have found some good stuff that I've gone on to buy the full size products, like Ursa Major face wipes, Kiehl's Facial Fuel (cleanser), Proraso shaving cream, and Marvis toothpaste. The Marvis toothpastes are especially nice, Italian, and better textured than the US Crest/Colgate gels I normally buy. Actually feel my teeth squeak while brushing. Licorice, ginger mint, jasmine, etc - all not overpowering in taste. Bought the variety mid-size pack of 6, like them all, and will be deciding which full-size to follow up with, once those run out.

The Bespoke Post box looks interesting, but haven't subbed there.

I have the marvis karakum flavor (supposed to be orange juice and cardamom) and I wished it was more cardamom-y.

Yerac, Wednesday, 9 October 2019 14:49 (four years ago) link

That sounds interesting! Amazon only showed the six kinds in that variety pack.

Toothpaste flavours in other countries are interesting. France has a lot of those weird savoury toothpastes. Makes you feel vaguely as if you're brushing your teeth with a twig from the kitchen garden.

I mean, I kind of thought the same thing, I just figure it's worth a try because I just don't really have other good tenable clothing strategies right now and want to change things up. At worst maybe I discover a couple of new brands and then just order them independently in the future.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 10 October 2019 20:17 (four years ago) link

I mean it's basically long work hours + two small kids + I don't really work or live near any of the stores I like + at least these services take some of your measurements into account (although they really should be more precise and really have you measure yourself) rather than the total crapshoot that is general online shopping when you are trying new brands out.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 10 October 2019 20:21 (four years ago) link

And at least the returns (which I assume you are right will be like 80%) are simplified by having a bunch of items all go back into a single ready-to-ship box.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 10 October 2019 20:22 (four years ago) link

over the last couple weeks i have been auditioning trousermakers so that i can find one brand/cut/size that works for me and buy 10 pairs and just be done with my lower half for a couple years.

j press, jomers, spiers + mackay, lands end, j crew -- all returned. the surprising winner? everlane heavyweight athletic cut chinos. naturally they have been discontinued.

okay, so you have time and energy limitations re shopping, but you are totally down to deal with packing shit in a box and taking it to the post office once a month? At least one of the women's sites that do these box things actually list the brands they select from, so at one point when I felt like changing it up, I just looked at that list and went to the sites for brands that looked interesting, rather than sign up for some box service. But then, I am kinda picky when it comes to clothes and actually like choosing my own clothes.

sarahell, Thursday, 10 October 2019 20:48 (four years ago) link

once every 2-3 months imo, and the post office is next to my job. And you really have virtually no "packing" to do, you just stuff it back into the same box with the preprinted label included.

I'm picky about clothes too. We will see.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 10 October 2019 20:51 (four years ago) link

based on anecdotal evidence these services are more popular with women than men, who are not only typically pickier about clothes but tend to have more complex fit considerations.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 10 October 2019 20:52 (four years ago) link

more complex fit considerations

lol -- this phrase needs to be worked into biology/sex ed discourse

sarahell, Thursday, 10 October 2019 20:55 (four years ago) link

i'm a man and i (like to) think i have very complex - and subtle! - fit considerations. by which i guess i mean "it's my size" = a 20% chance i'm going to like the way it fits.

Dadbod is happening to me and I’m sorta fighting it but also I’m not about to plug in some numbers to some black box robot and just hope the pants they pick for me include enough room for my modernized equipment

After so many years of never having to use the fitting rooms, I now have to use them for everything - I feel like a lady

I’m at the age where I’m going to spend the next few years missing the last few years, when I could just order clothes from a few places online with high confidence that they’d be comfortable and look good right away

El Tomboto, Thursday, 10 October 2019 23:34 (four years ago) link

Dadbod is happening to me and I’m sorta fighting it but

one of the "joys" of fighting the weight gain that comes from the slowing of metabolism is when you do well enough to lose enough weight so that the clothes that used to be comfortable and fit well are a bit too big, and you have to assess your risk tolerance about buying smaller sizes or different brands/designs in terms of, "Am I gonna spend a bunch on smaller clothes and then just gain that weight back?" ... Like I am now on the cusp of not having to shop in the fat section, which opens up a whole new realm of options, but ... I am not overly optimistic.

sarahell, Thursday, 10 October 2019 23:55 (four years ago) link

My first stitchfix box sucked and I'm sending all items back. The main issue was quality -- everything was at low price points and felt cheap, like it would degrade a lot after a few washes. I really liked the style and fit of one mock neck sweater but it had that same problem -- material seemed cheap. Sending everything back and giving them one more shot with a note that I'd prefer to spend more for better items. When I filled out the "profile" I don't think it ever asked me how much I would be willing to spend, which is a flaw.

You also don't get to see what's coming in advance. Trunk Club does at least have the price point option, and also it lets you preview what they're sending and nix things you don't want in advance. For example, I have no need for a belt right now, and stitch fix sent me a shitty belt anyway. OTOH I guess it's good to be surprised, e.g. I probably wouldn't have picked out the mock neck sweater but it actually looked really good on me (except for the material problem).

The return is very easy because they enclose a pre-labeled envelope and you just stuff the clothing in and drop it at the post office.

Clothes shopping is so awful as I edge toward 40 I've considered going quasi-Steve Jobs and ordering 15 more of the solid color Uniqlo button-down I like and never wearing anything else.

xp that's exactly it, isn't it? I'm also around the corner from 40. I'm a little bulkier than I used to be -- have packed on muscle but also my gut is bigger. The youthful styles of today are starting to seem unbecoming of my age, yet I'm nowhere near ready to go full Brooks Brothers grandpa.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Tuesday, 15 October 2019 16:59 (four years ago) link

I just cancelled trunk club. I got 2 sweaters that fit me like a giant sack, one flannel that fit me like a giant sack, a jacket that fit me like a giant sack, a pair of pants that was nice but a little tight (maybe worth letting out the waist but the price was also pretty high), and a really stupid looking pair of shoes. I'm returning everything to a Nordstrom and I realized that it's less of a pain in the ass to just go to the Nordstrom to try stuff on (although there would sort of be a psychic benefit to having someone narrow down the choice for me, if stuff actually fit).

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 17 October 2019 14:32 (four years ago) link

And fwiw that’s exactly what I did this afternoon. And it was a little annoying how many different options there were, many of which were more expensive than I was expecting. But I wound up with four items I was happy with, three of which are Nordstrom’s own brands (I’ve had good experiences with them in the past).
