Yeah, I think the show is incredibly realistic. But, maybe some of us live more sheltered lives than others?

nate's whole "man, i am so fucking wise and in touch"

He was being honest with his feelings. You must be the most uptight motherfucker around.

well, at least he died the way he lived. being a selfish, smug asshole.

And Nate a selfish asshole? Take a look at who he's been with. They were all much worse, including Brenda. I looked at my gf when Nate told Brenda he was done with her and we both went, "Yay!" with big smiles on our faces.

I looked at my gf when Nate told Brenda he was done with her and we both went, "Yay!" with big smiles on our faces.

I don't disagree that Brenda was awful, but I think my aggravation with Nate stems from the way he goes about things. I feel like he has a pattern of getting something he thinks will make him happy, then becoming almost immediately dissatisfied with that one thing and convincing himself something better is out there without ever trying to work to improve the situation he's in. His pattern is that when things get tough, he bolts. I don't get the sense that his character has any understanding of the idea that life is difficult, relationships take work, and the godlike "peace" ideal isn't something you discover, it's something you work to create.

He gave his marriage all of 1.5 episodes before he decided it wasn't working out, and the only reason he came to that conclusion was because he decided that if only he was with Maggie, then surely he would be happy. I get aggravated because I know so many 'Nate's -- always convinced that their unhappiness is caused by someone else, always bailing at the first sign of trouble, and always leaping with their full soul at the next shiny thing they're convinced is going to make them happy -- whether it's marriage, or Quakerism, or living on an organic food commune.

I can't determine if this is intentional -- if the character is deliberately written this way -- or if everyone involved with the show is also this myopic, onanistic and self-centered.

Brenda is a very flawed person, but she grew up. She has a very well developed sense of responsibility now, and understands that she has to sometimes put her needs aside for the benefit of the people that she loves. Nate did not have this at all - his entire life has always been about him running away from any responsibility, and chasing this impossible idea of freedom and "peace" that basically amounts to Nate doing whatever the hell he wants and never having to be questioned or deal with the consequences. So yeah, Nate is an incredibly selfish person, and he was never going to change.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:46 (eighteen years ago) link

My feeling is that Nate is deliberately written to be this way, and that Alan Ball and the writers were interested in creating a realistic portrait of a type of person that most everyone has met. I think that's the case with all of the central characters, really.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

uh, PFB (and Matthew) making the point i would've tried to, but better.

He was being honest with his feelings. You must be the most uptight motherfucker around.

sounds like something nate would say, actually.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:52 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't think that is the last we'll see of nate, anyway. he'll be popping up int he next three episodes to bother everyone, i'm sure.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Nah, Nate made a mistake marrying Brenda who DID always want to argue and DID always want to win those arguments. She's a fucking self-centered bitch. She was driving her coworkers nuts for fuck's sake!

Nate's first wife was having an affair with her brother-in-law and was murdered... You don't think that would be a head trip to live with, as you raise the daughter of that union. After you've had your head explode and disoriented for a while? Sucked back into your hometown doing a job you never wanted?

No, Nate was confused and getting better by being honest with his feelings. He made the mistake of trusting and caring for selfish people. And in the end, he decided it was important to put himself and his daughter's happiness first. Good for him.

He Who Can Not Be Named, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:12 (eighteen years ago) link

nate died happy! he was at peace with himself. selfish or not, he's dead and he said what he wanted to say to everyone. not everyone gets that opportunity.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh please. No one on the series was ever nearly as consumed by selfishness and narcissism as much as Nate. (Even Tony Soprano is less selfish and narcissistic than Nate!) Brenda and Claire sometimes, but they would always cycle back to responsibility and maturity before too long. Lisa was extremely passive aggressive and deeply insecure, but selfish isn't really a good word to describe her character.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh please. Sleeping with your sister's husband is selfish. This lack of judgement on your part throws your whole perception into question. Brenda cheated, cheated, cheated just as much as Nate and overall has a much more self-centered attitude. Nate went out of his way to make Lisa and Brenda happy, as well as his mother, brother and sister. And he rejected Brenda's fucked up brother for the safety of the ones he loved.

He Who Can Not Be Named, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:51 (eighteen years ago) link

it's the fourth best drama on hbo! no need to get this worked up people!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, actually, Lisa's relationship with Hoyt was almost entirely before she married Nate, and she was breaking it off with him so that she could fully commit to her child and husband.

There isn't anyone on Six Feet Under who isn't flawed, and interestingly, not a single central character who hasn't cheated. But in terms of relativity, Nate is the one who rarely had moments of maturity, much less selflessness, and everyone else has. He's by far the most selfish and immature character.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm seriously drawing a blank as to when Nate ever went "out of his way" to make anyone else happy, especially without a) getting something out of it himself or b) whining about it and pulling a martyr act later on. One of the kindest things he ever does in the whole series is coming back to working full time after David is attacked, and it's only because Claire guilts him into it.

I haven't watched the show at all this season but I did watch about 85% of the previous 4 seasons and I'm kind of wondering what show He Who Can Not Be Named was watching if He thinks that Nate wasn't a character study in arrested development/narcissistic self-loving douchebaggery.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Nate's character, if you didn't notice, was always accused of things he didn't do by manipulative, self-centered twats who drove him to do the things he did. He then followed through and did what he was being accused of. He was selfish, but the people he was with were always worse and continued to get worse while he got better, even after having all hell break loose on his world. He was mostly guilty of being confused about what he wanted, but so was every person he was involved with.

He Who Can Not Be Named, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

i think they wanted it to appear that nate had attained some wisdom, some sorta peace before he died but they'd sabotaged themselves previously by making nate so, um, human i guess - you couldn't really show short-term epiphany and expect the viewer to buy it at this point (anyone here think he wouldn't eventually feel trapped or bored with maggie?)(hasn't ruth 'figured out' a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle a few times already?). david's shown real growth i guess sorta, claire's progress i've bought basically but only cuz her character is a teenager-into-early twenties so relapses into immaturity, sudden fullblown obnoxiousness, fooling around, swings between thinking you know everything to you know nothing make perfect sense for her. nate was the center of the show though (the only other character i could even see an argument for is david), and smug or philandering or pissy i still liked him.

xpost haha he who can't be named is pretty funny

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, he's watching "Bizarro Six Feet Under". Got it.

(Agreed that Nate was the center of the show and agreed that he was more likeable than not, but he really was all about himself in a way that not even Claire could match.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

one hunch i had after last week and looking at future episode synopsi that thankfully didn't bear fruit was i thought they might drop a lil schiavo stylee, have a plug pulling moment. i'm somewhat wondering where the drama's gonna come from now - things felt weirdly resolved this week, it would've worked as last episode in a way.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean my favorite hbo character of all time is either adebisi on oz or omar on the wire and nate's nowhere near as, uh, flawed as them!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:31 (eighteen years ago) link

"I haven't watched the show at all this season"

"Agreed that Nate was the center of the show and agreed that he was more likeable than not, but he really was all about himself in a way that not even Claire could match."

Cite some points about why Nate was so much worse than everyone else. I've cited my reasons. All you've done is reaffirm your opinion. Lisa, Brenda, Claire, Brenda's bro (name escapes me at the moment), her mom, her lovers, Claire's friends, Claire's teacher, George, Ricoh (especially this season) have all shown themselves to be just as bad or much worse than Nate. Nate never tricked woman after woman into marrying him knowing full well he was schizophrenic. Nate never fucked David's wife. Nate never acted like half the selfish twat Claire has shown her to be, although perhaps when he was her age he was worse, it's hard to know for sure. Nate got involved with some very fucked up people who were very trying to deal with.

All throughout the first season, Nate stomps around the funeral home like a petulant little brat who has had his ball taken away, completely ignoring his mother's grief, his brother's resentment at having to stay after Nate took off and his sister's growing sense of abandonment and detachment from the rest of the family.

Nate's total self-involvement with having to move back from Seattle to help with the family business helps isolate Brenda, which feeds into her loneliness and sex addiction.

All throughout the series, Nate is a complete and total tool to Frederico whenever the subject of partnership in the business comes up, even though Rico's been there working his ass off to keep the business afloat longer than Nate has.

Billy is completely totally nuts, so okay Nate can't be more self-involved than him. YOU WIN.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Paragraph 1: typical family shit. I didn't stay home to take care of my parents, did you? I don't know anyone who has so far in my life's journey....

Paragraph 2: typical family shit, yet here he's trying to "do the right thing" and yet it's used against him in paragraph 1 and also from another angle here. I guess he should've not tried to help the family (but then you would've called him selfish).

Paragraph 3: Nate was protecting the family business, which is not a complete and total tool move. Rico was being a tool as well.

He Who Just Won't... etc., Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Ricoh (especially this season) have all shown themselves to be just as bad or much worse than Nate.

This is such bullshit! Rico can be buffoonish, but his first interest is consistently to help his family and his business. The guy is intensely loyal, and had his whole family life fucked by the one time he wasn't. Unlike Nate, however, he was genuinely guilty about what he did, and has worked very hard to earn the forgiveness of Vanessa. Rico's not a perfect guy, but he's definitely a good person for the most part, full of love for his family and friends. If anything, he's the total opposite of Nate - he has a very specific morality and lives for the benefit of others, often at his own expense. (He's more like David and Ruth in this way.)

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Rico went and bullshitted up the principal to manipulate himself back into his ex-wives life. He's a little shit.
