i haven't listened to the now, now record in months and at least five songs from it are still interchangeably in my head

princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 September 2018 16:29 (five years ago) link

this seems like as good a place as any to plug the fantastic new Dead Sara EP, which in its newfound slickness and maaximalism kinda reminds me of recent FOB. pls disregard the anti-Trump song which is uncharacteristically horrible (both musically and lyrically)

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Sunday, 23 September 2018 19:43 (five years ago) link

they are low-key one of the best bands going and they seem to be having a perennially rocky go of it

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Sunday, 23 September 2018 19:50 (five years ago) link

Yah love that ep

Not emo, but reading your enthusiasm for Number Girl I'm curious if you (Brad) ever heard of a band from LA called further? They are very similar in a lot of ways.

No one should sleep on last year's Fred Thomas album, which takes an incredible turn on the last few tracks to some sort of Tim Hecker-y ambient emo netherzone

Simon H., Thursday, 30 May 2019 16:49 (four years ago) link

yo do u guys like this band martha

I don't know where else to go, I can't tell what is good or bad anymore, I need help.

I figured Brad has strong opinions and I need someone like that to tell me if this extremely 90s band lost to time is very good or very bad.

I've been weirdly obsessed with this song in particular. Let me know if I'm crazy.

Also sorry if this was the wrong place to ask

Evan, Thursday, 4 February 2021 21:05 (three years ago) link

not at all, not even i understand this thread. never heard of mrs. svenson in my life but that song sounds great imo. good drummer

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 February 2021 21:11 (three years ago) link

They never really came to be as I understand it. Some demos and an album that ended getting aborted in 1995. It's so of its time, but I am totally addicted to the hook.

Evan, Thursday, 4 February 2021 21:17 (three years ago) link

Disclaimer: I know this looks like a pathetic way to pitch my/my friend's band or something promise no affiliation. Just had to share

Anyway thanks for weighing in.

Evan, Thursday, 4 February 2021 21:52 (three years ago) link

listen i still have a video of a friend's band's set from eight years ago bc they never ended up recording any music and i loved their songs so much, i inherently get it

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 February 2021 22:00 (three years ago) link

So much good music unrecognized out there...

But hey always fun to discover and dig it up again from the corners of the internet or wherever. A lonely exercise though (like geeking on "Mrs Svenson" of all things in 2021)

Evan, Thursday, 4 February 2021 22:11 (three years ago) link

my son's pediatrician is Dr. (Mr.) Svenson ... i will have to ask him about this next time we see him

alpine static, Thursday, 4 February 2021 22:22 (three years ago) link

Ha! wouldn't that be something. Have him send me one of their old demo tapes.

Evan, Thursday, 4 February 2021 22:26 (three years ago) link

on the subject of songs loved by a very small number of people that I think might appeal to people who would open this thread, one of my very favorite songs, written and performed by a local band who opened for snail mail here and appeared to be about, well, snail mail's age:

Hi Brad. Back with another obscure 90s act. I'm getting increasingly restless about being the only fan of this band on ilx and I thought of you, mainly because when listening to this album in particular (for the millionth time in my life) I was reflecting on how it shares a sort of similarity with bands like Hum or Deftones for their own dreamy angst rock thing, though with pop-punkier roots. Maybe you'll like it. I might even start a thread for them and hope that people get curious due to their (now) unfortunate name.

Yeah wait is "this years SLIFT" supposed to be Fucked Up or Rhododendron? Because I could really use a 2021 SLIFT in my life. The former I'm waiting for my physical copy to get here, the latter is new to me.

sorry, I should clarify. played through the rhododendron last night and thought it was SLIFT-y at times. it's also king crimson at times and refused and smashing pumpkins and hum. it has a lot going on but was a lot of fun. after it ended I felt a lot like I did when I finished the Slift album, it was a psychedelic journey through space but was always rockin'

gman59, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 17:31 (two years ago) link

Frightened Rabbit vibes, there, and I don't *think* it's just the accent?

Wait, which accent? Hmmm... I'll maybe keep an eye on this child nonetheless

The Rhododendron bisnes mildly too widdly for me, Fucked Up obviously immense, yeah maybe I tolerate the widdle in certain contexts...
