Question from a noob: is Towns really a liability at defence? Looking over at basketball reference, his DBPM is way higher than noted two way player Butler, his defensive shares ranks 24th in the entire NBA.

it’s hard for me to think of a more useless stat than DBPM

https://hoopshype.com/2017/10/26/its-time-to-get-concerned-about-karl-anthony-towns-on-defense/

this is from the beginning of last season but it has lots of other stats where kat doesn't come out looking good. i believe the consensus is that he improved during the year but still has a long way to go.

kat's footwork in that video is horrendous.

also coach nick's mid-video ad segues are wild. he really slides them in there.

I’d never noticed kat’s footwork before but yeah major major yikes, playground stuff

Clay, Friday, 21 September 2018 00:16 (five years ago) link

his legs look like baby horse legs

sprout god (lag∞n), Friday, 21 September 2018 00:18 (five years ago) link

lol

also the way he just puts his arms up and then keeps them totally stationary, that's like some midwest high school shit

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 September 2018 00:18 (five years ago) link

stay vertical! but with no idea what that means

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Friday, 21 September 2018 00:29 (five years ago) link

haha yup

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 September 2018 00:30 (five years ago) link

you can't compare DBPM across positions really, as rebounding is a huge component of defense

ciderpress, Friday, 21 September 2018 01:08 (five years ago) link

it's just completely dumb based on box score as the name implies and so forth

k3vin k., Friday, 21 September 2018 01:13 (five years ago) link

box plus minus is an irrelevant stat in 2018 imo

k3vin k., Friday, 21 September 2018 01:18 (five years ago) link

thanks for the info guys!

Van Horn Street, Friday, 21 September 2018 03:32 (five years ago) link

we are here for you (to tell you how bad kat is at defense)

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 September 2018 03:37 (five years ago) link

we went in on KATs poor defense last year in the reg season thread. this is some of what we said after that video upthread was posted then:
2017-18 NBA REGULAR SEASON THREAD PART 1 ALL OF AMERICAS FAVORITE TEAMS ARE BACK

i stand by this

KAT plays d like a guy who permanently has 5 fouls and is simply trying to avoid fouling out

circles otm too

the two hands straight up thing def seems more like "see, i'm not touching him" than trying to pressure or contest.

also in that thread we called him out for a poor game even tho he dropped in insane statline on offense (34/19 or something) and m@tt got defensive for a minute... but now i think he's realized we were right.

also embiid otm

kat may average 30/13 this season

from new lowe article:

Motion-tracking cameras recorded Wiggins "running fast" during only 4.8 percent of his time on the floor, one of the 10 lowest such figures in the league, per Second Spectrum. (Almost everyone in his slowpoke vicinity is a plodding 7-footer.)

damning stuff on wiggins in there yikes.

kev theres a jamal murray section in there... this comment should please you

And Paul Millsap is the ultimate fill-the-gaps big who nudged Jokic -- by way of a late-season heart-to-heart, team sources say -- into undisputed alpha dog position.

Sources: The NBA’s Board of Governors passed rule changes for season that include: reset of shot clock to 14 seconds after offensive rebound; simplification of clear-path foul rule; expanding definition of "hostile act" for purposes of triggering replay.

sprout god (lag∞n), Friday, 21 September 2018 19:07 (five years ago) link

wow no more kick it back out for a full 24 for an offensive rebound? that's going to change some things and add another couple/few possessions to the game

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Friday, 21 September 2018 19:16 (five years ago) link

i like it

ciderpress, Friday, 21 September 2018 19:31 (five years ago) link

to me it decreases the value of offensive rebounds, not really a fan

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 September 2018 19:32 (five years ago) link

It’s a bullshit rule that makes some possessions worth less than others.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 21 September 2018 22:41 (five years ago) link

yeah im not in alignment with this one. otm it devalues a skill that was already being devalued

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Friday, 21 September 2018 22:47 (five years ago) link

seems like something they should've experimented w/ in the g-league for awhile? or maybe they have?

Clay, Friday, 21 September 2018 22:51 (five years ago) link

i don't feel too strongly about it unlike my opinion that they should change the color of the basketball to Green

ciderpress, Friday, 21 September 2018 22:57 (five years ago) link

they should bring on the fiba rules of no offensive goaltending in parallel with the new rule

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Friday, 21 September 2018 22:57 (five years ago) link

the 14 second shot clock rest has been used on non shooting fouls for a few years now, its good imo youre already in the front court so u dont need time to bring the ball up and it speeds the game up

sprout god (lag∞n), Friday, 21 September 2018 23:28 (five years ago) link

It penalizes the offense for succeeding at doing something difficult. It's dumb. It devalues big man in a game with no use for big men as it is.

HOWEVER: I'm with Spottie in that I fully support bringing in FIBA rim rules. Once it hits it's live; no "In the cylinder" crap for either team to worry about. Then I'd think about the 14-seconds on a rebound thing.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 21 September 2018 23:35 (five years ago) link

Just want you to know that no matter how bad your favorite NBA gets, we here in MN are committed to being an absolute dysfunctional shitshow that will lift your spirits and provide lolz on even your darkest hoops days.

Story filed to ESPN: As Minnesota’s front office tells inquiring rivals that team has no plans to trade Jimmy Butler, owner Glen Taylor had a different message at NBA’s Board of Governors meetings: Butler is available and owners/GM’s should contact Taylor himself if necessary.

ahh lol

sprout god (lag∞n), Friday, 21 September 2018 23:40 (five years ago) link

suspect not many offensive rebound possessions last longer than 14 seconds anyway generally a shot goes up real soon after the rebound, changing to fiba goal tend rules wld be interesting wonder how often these crazed athletes wld take a ball off the rim

sprout god (lag∞n), Friday, 21 September 2018 23:41 (five years ago) link

it’s fine if you get a clean out of bounds play but imo if the offense can’t get another shot up right away it doesn’t leave enough time to get everyone set up again for a real possession.

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 September 2018 23:41 (five years ago) link

yeah but generally the defense is in such disarray after an Oreb that a good shot happens pretty fast

sprout god (lag∞n), Friday, 21 September 2018 23:44 (five years ago) link

But sometimes the offense wants to waste clock. They busted their asses to get another possession and should have all the options. If they stole the ball immediately after a defensive rebound they'd get 24 seconds. It's a dumb rule that changes what a possession means.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 21 September 2018 23:52 (five years ago) link

Also, why is it still 14-seconds for a reset in the offensive end when they've shortened the backcourt violation time from 10 to 8 seconds? Shouldn't it logically be 16?

EZ Snappin, Friday, 21 September 2018 23:54 (five years ago) link

wasting clock is bad IMHO

Irving says he's aware that he's been linked to Jimmy Butler in persistent free-agent rumors regarding a mutual desire to play together in New York, but he says he's had no such discussions with Butler. In fact, he says, the last time he talked to Butler at length was when they were both playing with USA Basketball, and the two engaged in a spit-balling session along with Durant and Cousins about what the future held for each of them.

"And that,'' Irving laughs, "was in 2016.''

"Who wouldn't be a part of this?" Irving says, gesturing to Boston's new practice facility. "Who wouldn't want to be a part of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum and Al Horford and Gordon Hayward? People keep saying, 'Why won't he commit to Boston?'

"Well, there are financial implications involved.''

If Irving had signed an extension with Boston this past summer, he would have potentially left more than $80 million on the table than if he waits and re-signs with the Celtics next summer.

"I'm accepting it's going to be a constant story,'' Irving shrugs. "It's a point in my professional career where it is a big-time decision. I've been away from Cleveland officially for a year now, and I'm finally getting acclimated in Boston.

wow good for jackie getting him to talk so much. he could still do anything and i wouldn't be surprised but that was comforting to read.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 22 September 2018 00:24 (five years ago) link

yeah i mean he seems happy on the celtics, he cldnt ask for a better basketball situation, theres always the chance he just feels like he needs to be on the knicks or whatever, but it doesnt really make sense

sprout god (lag∞n), Saturday, 22 September 2018 01:55 (five years ago) link

KAT is so frustrating. i don't have rooting interests either way, but he's such an offensive talent that it pains me to see him suck so bad on defense.

i'm the weirdo who actually likes the goaltending rule as-is. it feels right to have to let the shot go in or not on its own as long as it still has a chance.

circles, Saturday, 22 September 2018 03:57 (five years ago) link

after more thought i don't actually like the offensive rebound thing and also don't think anything else should set the clock to 14 the only options should be back to 24 or paused

Thibodeau’s general manager, Scott Layden, had been shutting down trade inquires for Butler in recent days, and Taylor has demanded that Layden not only take calls on potential deals, but reach out to initiate conversations, league sources said. This is all really...unique. https://t.co/RwoI9RSvGz
