I've watched the first season and read the first book, and dug them both. But should I carry on with the books or the show???

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 25 September 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link

FWIW, I watched the show first. Started in on the books but bailed out somewhere in book 2 - I'm super-snobby about my SF so that was not unexpected.

I kind of feel that having read the books ruined this last season for me.

Deontology Sanders (Leee), Monday, 8 October 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

But which would you rather have ruined?

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 8 October 2018 21:23 (five years ago) link

Recommend the audiobooks. Jefferson Mays pretty much nailed the characters prior to the broadcast series' casting. Just listen far enough in advance that you've largely forgotten the details before airing. The books aren't timeless classic, just better than average space opera, but if you like the universe and characters, the books add to the immersion, particularly with respect to Miller in S1-S2.

I expect that that the broadcast series will take enormous divergences with the content of book 4, Cibola Burn, which is by general fan consensus the least-liked book. I think pretty much all of book 4's contribution to the overall arc could be provided by reading the handful of pages upon which the word "Miller" appears from an ebook. Several of the novellas offered more backstory than book 4.

My hope is that S4 will cover Cibola Burn as a half-season, alongside some material presaging book 5-6 arc within the solar system, and the wider book 7-9 arc that's still emerging. This still leaves enough time for another entirely novel narrative amidst the Expanse, beyond the rings, as well as ending S4 after a book 5 cliffhanger.

Guess it was kind of inevitable once Amazon stepped up to save the show.

And all future seasons will be on Prime

groovypanda, Tuesday, 22 January 2019 20:10 (five years ago) link

My impression is that Amazon also obtained rights to S1-3 from Netflix in jurisdictions where it formerly aired. There's going to be a big marketing push over the next 6 months or so.

Glad Cara Gee has risen to the stature of UN secretary/Roci crew/authors/showrunner with Drummer.

Though honestly I wasn't sure it wasn't Nadine Nicole (Clarissa) before looking closely. The racoon makeup is iconic.

Up to Season 3 on the rewatch. So good.

Was wondering as this was now Amazon, we're going to get all of Season 4 in one go, yes?

Think their only weekly releases are their exclusives of shows that are on weekly on US TV.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 08:35 (five years ago) link

Honestly, I'd prefer if Amazon and other streaming services presented their serialized/episodic series on a one episode per week schedule, if only to preserve the "social event" nature of broadcast TV.

I don't think any streaming series has sparked the amount of water cooler talk that everyone in the fanbase, awaiting the next installment, can. There's a degree of anticipation that comes with serialized output, that's ill served when its squeezed out at once, just a miniseries/movie, too long for one sitting. The internet's going to be ablaze for a week wondering how (for example) Jon Snow gets out of a cliffhanger, and that's a good thing for the show, the broadcaster, and the viewership.

If the Amazon et al tried this, those who wished to binge could of course do so, 10-14 weeks later, but will have to avoid spoilers online. Those who want to watch with their friends anywhere on the planet, as a common focus to pleasant conversation, and without so much concern about seeing spoilers, can follow episode by episode on the day of release.

Kardashev scale sex tape (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 08:56 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I'd much rather a weekly release.

I haven't got the time to binge 10 or 13 episodes over one weekend but there are plenty of people who will and then spoilers will be out there.

(Non-book spoilers FYI)

Finally caught up with this, really liked the Ring plotline, the disaster recovery episode was amazing and totally sold me on how much space sucks. My only complaint is that a lot of the character arcs and dialogue in the finale seemed off. Ashford in particular, I get that they were trying to make him a noble antagonist but but it really seemed to come out of nowhere. And Melba, whose storyline has always seemed kinda dumb tbh, asking a stranger if one good deed will make up for a lifetime of bad choices was just awful writing and totally unnecessary.

Can’t wait for the new season though!

JoeStork, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 23:39 (four years ago) link

I dunno he seemed pretty noble from the beginning? To the point where his antagonism could have been construed as purely a consequence of Drummer's POV

At times I've wondered whether Ashford's character was a rewritten Anderson Dawes once they realised Jared Harris had other commitments

Lil' Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 15 May 2019 09:28 (four years ago) link

I probably phrased that badly - it’s not the nobility I object to, it’s that his decisions in the finale are really hard to buy, and it comes off like the writers are using his nobility to justify his bizarre behavior because they need an antagonist to make the episode work.

JoeStork, Wednesday, 15 May 2019 15:27 (four years ago) link

I recently had a meeting with a potential client for work and the dude eerily reminded me of Amos. Similar voice and brusque, humorless manner, even looked a bit like him. It was a bit unsettling. As you can probably guess the gig didn’t pan out.
