Heard an edit of the long track on the radio and loved it. Not listened to the whole album yet, but have it on order.

Loved Impossible Spaces and v intrigued by Tim F's comparison of the new one to John Martyn.

plax (ico), Tuesday, 18 September 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

Liking this a good deal. I've honestly not listened to anything beyond Like Hearts Swelling so wasn't expecting the drifting Arthur Russell sound. Agree there's a John Martyn feel to it - particularly circa One World. The presence of Bejar makes sense too: there's a distant relationship to the more open spaces of Kaputt.

+1 on Impossible Spaces being a modern masterpiece. Nothing else so entirely and consistently makes me feel I’m having a drug experience.

The title track on the new one discovers a hitherto unimagined midpoint between Martyn's "Small Hours" and the 12" mix of "Bizarre Love Triangle".

Tim F, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 21:03 (five years ago) link

(actually arguably The Blue Nile already discovered this with "Rags To Riches", which is the other reference point I'd offer up)

Tim F, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 21:05 (five years ago) link

Can't believe this could be his breakthrough. Always found he deserved it, never imagined it actually happening though. Can't stress enough that newcomers should check out his earlier work; Bejar's contribution here is brilliant, but Perri can stand, as he has done, on his own feet quite comfortably.

The Bejar collaboration might be my least favourite thing here actually - that's not a diss, it's great, but I think I marginally prefer the first two parts of "Everybody's Paris", while the title track is the clear standout for me.

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 September 2018 00:34 (five years ago) link

i pressed play on this and four minutes into the first song i was like "i hope this goes on for a while it's really nice" and wow there are twenty minutes left to go, that is fucking radical

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 19 September 2018 00:44 (five years ago) link

Haha ^^^^ was my reaction exactly

Tim F, Wednesday, 19 September 2018 00:50 (five years ago) link

the first song on this rules very deeply

i like the andre ethier version of paris the best

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 19 September 2018 01:50 (five years ago) link

the synth line in the title is so so good, the Bizarre Love Triangle comparison there is otm

ufo, Wednesday, 19 September 2018 03:54 (five years ago) link

this is great

Evan, Wednesday, 19 September 2018 04:35 (five years ago) link

Can't believe this absolutely snook right by me. Such a big fan of Impossible Spaces and nearing the end of the opening track I'm a huge fan of this already,

in twelve parts (lamonti), Wednesday, 19 September 2018 08:29 (five years ago) link

wow, thanks for alerting me to this. not even halfway through the title track and loving it.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 19 September 2018 22:29 (five years ago) link

totally John Martyn. this is exciting.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 19 September 2018 22:32 (five years ago) link

well, the opener is a lot better than the rest but that track is possibly the best new thing i've heard this year, so it's all good.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 20 September 2018 01:31 (five years ago) link

thanks, neils!

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 20 September 2018 01:32 (five years ago) link

seeing Andre Ethier pop up again was lovely, I've been neglecting him too long

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 September 2018 01:34 (five years ago) link

I had to look him up, tbh.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 20 September 2018 01:39 (five years ago) link

amazing form on the baseball field.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 20 September 2018 01:40 (five years ago) link

sure thing jed! I'm not too familiar with John Martyn - could you point me towards some of his stuff that's similar to this?

maybe it's the Dombal reading, but I can't let go of the feeling that, for all it's blissful subtlety, this is a political record

didn't catch all the Paris lyrics, but it's perhaps a meditation on the terrorist attacks?

niels, Thursday, 20 September 2018 06:21 (five years ago) link

The Paris Song makes me think of a Leonard Cohen song structure.

in twelve parts (lamonti), Thursday, 20 September 2018 11:28 (five years ago) link

not totally into this on first listen tbh, but it did remind me of some stuff that i definitely do like - the tortoise & will oldham album especially, but also some of the stuff on the last shy layers record

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Friday, 21 September 2018 13:18 (five years ago) link

I wanna live inside the title track forever, but I'll settle for 24 minutes at a time.

J. Sam, Friday, 21 September 2018 13:31 (five years ago) link

really love him as guitarist. he's clearly a producer first and a guitarist second, but he does well with making the parts so textural and restrained. great stuff on impossible spaces too

Heez, Friday, 21 September 2018 17:36 (five years ago) link

saw him open for destroyer and the guy i was wish yelled WOLFMAN!! over and over. it was really obnoxious at the time but that song really is a jam

Heez, Friday, 21 September 2018 17:38 (five years ago) link

am I off-base in thinking that this kinda sounds like a super stretched-out version of the last couple albums by The National? not in a bad way, but it struck me immediately.

nba jungboy (voodoo chili), Friday, 21 September 2018 19:45 (five years ago) link

it did occur to me today that his voice sounds a lot like Matt Berninger's

ufo, Saturday, 22 September 2018 02:58 (five years ago) link

this would be better if he was better at singing.

plax (ico), Saturday, 22 September 2018 16:57 (five years ago) link

would go for an instrumental version of this

plax (ico), Saturday, 22 September 2018 17:06 (five years ago) link

i like the album a lot, but if andre ethier sang on every track, this would be straight 10/10

nba jungboy (voodoo chili), Saturday, 22 September 2018 17:12 (five years ago) link

wolfman is a total fucking jam. as is changes.

Interesting chat with Sandro about the album here, talking about songs that could basically go on for ever

eleven months pass...

New album out today!

He played in London last night and was predictably great - ended with In Another Life (a full 25 minutes of it) and then John Martyn's Couldn't Love You More.

John Martyn's Couldn't Love You More

That's a good fit

New album out today!

well this is just wonderful

Tim F, Sunday, 8 September 2019 13:33 (four years ago) link

two months pass...

I've only come to him recently, but Perri's three 2010s albums must be up there for a 'best run of the decade' award, non?

the new one is good, though not as magical as in another life. the clav on wrong about the rain is one of my favorite sounds in any song this year.
