And yeah youve seen my pic from my prev trip up that hike- no ferrata at all- its just 17% loose scree at 12k ft which for me is not climbable on the bike, but was totally rideable down.

I’m on stamsted’s twitter and thought about asking him for THE LORE of how to do Argentine-style slogs, but he probably would advise riding it or shouldering it and running or whatever superhuman legends do. (stamsted won montezumas back in the day, and i think the very very nearby grays peak 14er was in that loop set back then).

Did the ride, it was long fun and very hard. That hikeabike-y bit from 11200ft to 13100ft, which was a firm 1.3 hours on fresh legs, was 2.3 hours and fucking exhausting after already climbing 5000ft on road and dirt. I was super glad to have done the test piece, because I know I had it, but conditions from fatigue were radically more challenging.

SO i'm in the gear thread because my ride pal had on of those adventure bikey style top tube baglets for phonecam and goodies. i realized i want that. his is magnetic closure and says he's never dislodged gear (i think its a Serfas). he mounted it back against he seatpost, rather then the more typical stem junction. i hate accessing saddle bags, and don't wear cycling jerseys on my mtb rides usually. i need one that will hold a phone, a tube, a co2, maybe a clif bar and a gel. for me that's good for 3-4 hours. if i need more, i'll have a water pack that i can load.

Do you all have top tube bags, and if so what do you recommend?

I like the look of both of those. I’ve been eying up the latest iteration of the Salsa Warbird. Of course it would require me to have a right foot more firmly attached to my leg than it currently is.

Not sure i want thru axle for a multi purpose long range bike. For a trail bike def, for an xc bike probly, but a core adventure bike? not sure. Then i go, why NOT? and i guess... good point really. Going 2x is correct here imo.

what’s the downsides with thru axle ? lack of replacement parts in far flung / rural locales ?

thats what i meant by “good point,” the basis of my reservation is not well-supported. They are def better with suspension, marginally better for steering control, and i’m not aware of failure issues. For deep site exploration and adventure they may be hard to fix/replace- but harder than dics? no. Plus i’m premium and shipping is free.

TY. fwiw i had to get a new shock, and i did not enjoy having to go to 100mm from 80mm. the bike still feels awesome, but a little more mtb-like than before. I think i can reduce the travel and crown height back.

guy on traildonkey had 26.5x50mm Nanos here, and it was rigid, and... that trail was an insane jackhammerfest. He is a muuuuch better linefinder than i on descents. That road/trail is 3600’ of pretty insane. a rarely ridden testcase to prove how much you just dont give a phuk about “flow.” part joke, part test, part awesome.

every bit of circumference was good there- my two biggest criticisms of classick 26” are- 1. not roll-y enough for obstacles, and 2. scarcity of great tires/rims. on issue 2 im amost at hoarder stage to keep that ‘goose loose.

gbx damn, nope it's v. cool imo. i have non-dropper seatpost/saddle combo that i use for light singletrack/groady rides- thompson/cambium. only dif to yours is that my post has the layback swerve on it. i've never heard of hunt/mason, but after perusing how they do online, daaaaamn those are nice looking. 28/28 and wide is v on target imo.

In 5 years there will be no such signs- the industry will unitize bikes and e-bikes/mopeds. the counter effect might be larger areas of public land made off limits both, who knows.

cargo moto-bikes are cool tho not sure the moto is necessary for me now. like commuter motos make total sense to me so you dont sweat at all, but like, i dont need to make the scene at sprouts or safeway, so pedal for real, bitch.

i came to praise covatech duoderm extra-thin 4x4 sheets. i'm sure 4 out of 5 cycling doctors recommend it for those suffering from rubber-side-down incompetence. wash, debride, disinfect, rinse, stick and BE AMAZED. if you're really terrible and you gouged so deep and wide that stitches aren't possible, it's still pretty great, you'll just have fucktons of something called "exudate" for a couple days, which will blow out your dressing sheet to 70% well before the usually recommended 3-7 day exchange period. and also the goo/exudate that floods out is dire. the whole sheet becomes like a soggy, super-fatty piece of un-crisped goose skin. so i know this is yr 2000 tech

I ordered a new bike. I've been really slack post tendon resection which is bad for me. Decided to try and go in a more bike packing direction, I want to recapture some of the fun I had as a teenager biking across Ireland and France. Just waiting for a delivery date and looking at some nice weekend routes I can do.

Was never a big presence on this board but by coincidence I have started cycling daily for the first time in about 3 years just last week on my old single speed. So out of shape. Was humbled by a hill I used to do on my commute on friday, felt bad. But I'm just going to keep keep trying to get at least half an hour a day and work my way back up

can't wait to hear about new bike day, ed. really sorry to hear about tendon resection, i didn't know they do that. they must, like, reattach it somehow? i had my clavicle resected by a cm, but no fastening is needed for that, the a/c joint just scars itself back together and it's pretty normal, fwiw.
