I keep thinking "this is finally the release where people sour on Apple" and then their stock price doubles again.

Speaking for myself but I can't help but imagine there are many other people like me: the thought of switching to another OS is terrifying/paralyzing. I have used Apple all my life. Used Windows XP when I was in HS but that's it. Ever since his death the company has totally stagnated and failed to invent or introduce anything truly exciting. I use Apple products but I'm not a super fan, like I couldn't care less about the watch. All of their products keep getting worse too, in different ways. But I can't switch.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:25 (five years ago) link

I still balk at the idea of paying $1k for a friggin' phone. Also don't quite understand the difference in the X tiers

Nhex, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:29 (five years ago) link

I borrowed one of the fancy new Dell Windows laptops for a week to see if I could get along with it - god, it still sucked so much. All the things I hate about OS X (notifications, handoffs) combined with an absolutely miserable trackpad.

I think I'd be fine with one of the 'pure' Android phones without any of the Samsung overlay bullshit but there's not really any enticement to switch (nor any enticement to switch to a new iPhone, tho).

I have a really, really basic Chromebook that's great for what it is but it doesn't have a fucking caps lock button (???????????)

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:36 (five years ago) link

maybe computers and phones are basically just this until they get superseded by things that render computers and phones obsolete. welcome to the information appliance age.

Paleo Weltschmerz (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

When my dad died I inherited his almost new iPad, this is the device I find most useless of everything I've owned. The screen's pretty but it's awkward to type on, more awkward to play games on than a phone, uncomfortable to hold for reading books.

Total found uses: drum machine+synth apps, reading comics. For something that probably cost $900 new.

louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:40 (five years ago) link

the apps for music making are a pretty compelling reason to get an iPad, though never for $900 imo... like, anything as much or less than an SP-404 makes sense.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:49 (five years ago) link

i have to use ipads for work (including keyboard covers) and they're just awkward. they need a flat surface to sit on, the keyboards aren't great at all for typing, and phones do pretty much the same thing most of the time.

WHY DO YOU NEED A CAPS LOCK BUTTON

j., Thursday, 13 September 2018 04:35 (five years ago) link

it's important

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 September 2018 05:16 (five years ago) link

iirc i mainly use mine to see whether or not the caps lock light is on or off

j., Thursday, 13 September 2018 05:58 (five years ago) link

sometimes i turn it on for fun but then i turn it off right away

j., Thursday, 13 September 2018 05:59 (five years ago) link

I’m on the iPhone upgrade program so I’ll get a new XSMAX. I don’t think I have a need for 512 GB tho. Current have 256 and only use about 100 gigs. I don’t expect I’ll start shooting a lot of 4K video or whatever would fill that up.

Jeff, Thursday, 13 September 2018 09:36 (five years ago) link

flappy bird on my chromebook you can change the search icon button (which is where the caps lock should be) to work as caps lock (somewhere in settings)

niels, Thursday, 13 September 2018 10:30 (five years ago) link

How long reasonably can I keep my SE alive? I have absolutely no interest in any phones Apple made after and I’m frankly debating if I even want to continue with them period (I imagine if I get an Android phone I’ll immediately regret it).

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 September 2018 11:58 (five years ago) link

ios 12 has done lots of performance stuff to improve older devices, but I'd imagine iOS 13 will spunk all that away.

stet, Thursday, 13 September 2018 12:19 (five years ago) link

Android is a non-starter for me; I should buy an SE just to keep as a backup just in case this one craps out and they refuse to repair it for love or money.

faculty w1fe (silby), Thursday, 13 September 2018 13:24 (five years ago) link

yeah I’m thinking of getting a spare se also and figuring I’ll be on iOS 12 until 2025, what else is a smartphone gonna do before then but stream #content at 69G

I have trouble with this too. Also I imagine there are a lot of younger people who are just growing up used to wireless and don't care enough about the improved sound from the wired connection. Today's pop music is p much designed for shitty audio anyway.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 13 September 2018 14:28 (five years ago) link

are there good sounding wireless headphones yet? my dad gave me a very shitty sounding pair of pretty generic ones. I don’t want airpods bc the wired apple phones don’t fit my ears well; I love my 30 € sennheisers wired ones with rubber tips.

droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 13 September 2018 14:32 (five years ago) link

The Sony MDR-1000X are among the best headphones I’ve ever had: but huge + pricey

Also replacement ear pads are in credibly expensive., like $50 an ear and mine are getting somewhat ripe.

I disagree with the part about not paying $900 for one. I bought an iPad Pro last year. It was a lot of money for me - it was a purchase that I considered for a long time, and so far I have zero regrets. There seems to be an endless supply of innovative music apps. It seems like every few months someone drops a new app that changes how I approach everything. The downside of this is that I feel like I am constantly in learning mode, but it has helped me get closer to what I consider to be the perfect workflow. The touch screen is perfect for music software - gets you closer to "knob twiddling" than using a mouse on a desktop. I also use it for drawing and there are some top notch apps for that as well. The biggest concern I have is that the device is going to be outdated before I feel I've fully gotten its value.

beard papa, Thursday, 13 September 2018 15:48 (five years ago) link

true. and the extra $$$ obviously justified by everything else the iPad can do, even if you choose not to use it. yeah, I've thought about it a lot, because a lot of friends of mine use them for music and they're super portable, powerful, and versatile. wouldn't mind getting one as a gift tbh!

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 September 2018 17:42 (five years ago) link

and niels thank you for the tip! yes, the search button is where the caps lock should be. i'll look around in settings.

this is exactly where i am

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:03 (five years ago) link

I've been seeing a lot of eulogies for the SE lately. I hadn't realized it was so beloved, but it's understandable. It's the only smartphone I've ever owned, and none of the other ones currently on the market look nearly as appealing. My wife has the 8, which I find a lot less pleasant to use - the lack of a home button that actually moves when you press it and the lock button being in a less convenient place are two big drawbacks for me.

https://techcrunch.com/2018/09/14/the-iphone-se-was-the-best-phone-apple-ever-made-and-now-its-dead/

o. nate, Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:09 (five years ago) link

me too but, given the pattern, the problem is not how long you can keep it alive but how long apple decides (via updates) that you can't keep it alive. Even if they didn't render the SE obsolete, as such, it would still, ostensibly, be rendered obsolete by the fact that you can no longer use your favoured or most vital app. So buying a brand new SE to keep in case & for the future would just be a waste of £400, sadly.

i have an SE, got it back in dec 2016. i plan on holding onto it as long as i used the 3S (about 5 years)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcZZlQ4Tmrc (Karl Malone), Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:16 (five years ago) link

I hope you can because I have the same and don't intend to "upgrade" to another iPhone.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:21 (five years ago) link

yeah, i would still have the 3s if i wouldn't have lost it in the back of a cab on christmas day. i love the small size of the SE (and the 3s before it). the only feature of the new phones that i crave are the new cameras.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcZZlQ4Tmrc (Karl Malone), Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:26 (five years ago) link

I called my carrier yesterday and they said when Apple discontinues an old model and adds a new one, they usually buy up a ton of the old ones and mark the price down even more. So I didn't get an SE yesterday, but I'm sure I will before the year's over. My 5s is still in good shape at nearly 5 years old, but...just making sure.

WmC, Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:29 (five years ago) link

the problem, of course, is that iOS will continue to update, and there will be some hotshit new app that everyone has that requires the new iOS, and then installing it will make your ancient SE so slow it's almost unusable, despite claims from apple that the new OS isn't significantly slower on older phones. when i finally lost the 3s i was almost grateful because the new OS' had rendered it almost unusable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcZZlQ4Tmrc (Karl Malone), Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:37 (five years ago) link

the lack of a home button that actually moves when you press it

the moving home button was always the first thing to break for me. the fake haptic one has been incredible.

and the lock button being in a less convenient place

yeah this placement is balls. when you grab the phone and try to lock it, half the time you trigger the volume control instead/as well.

calamity gammon (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 15 September 2018 02:18 (five years ago) link

how do they not figure that kind of thing out during development

Maybe it lets them put all the buttons in one spot so they can waterproof that bit.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Saturday, 15 September 2018 03:05 (five years ago) link

My photos are littered with random screeenshots because of the daft relative palacement of the lock and volume up controls on the X. Which combination also happens to be how you take a screenshot on the X.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 15 September 2018 03:34 (five years ago) link

Even if you can resist the hot-shit new app, the cold-shit old apps you love tend to eventually pack up if you refuse to update to the new iOS.

Alba, Saturday, 15 September 2018 09:05 (five years ago) link

iOS 12 has been great for increasing performance on older devices. I have it on an old iPhone 6 and it is a whole different experience.
