yeah I agree completely, ADP is great if only my 6th favourite. i think it's just a result of the low turnout + her having four classic albums so not much other room on most ballots that the album results are the way they are

I kinda wish she'd done something like it earlier in her career, going all out in the direction of Icicle, Cloud On My Tongue, Yes Anastasia, Marianne etc.

when i was a kid i skipped from little earthquakes right to pele and never wound my way back to under the pink, so my enthusiasm for it is relatively fresh—after all the years that passed in between, hearing a tori album that was pretty much every bit the equal of its predecessor and successor yet was doing something distinct from either of them (i talked about the production and the impact of the second side prob sufficiently on the voting thread), it was almost like learning to fall in love with her all over again

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 11 September 2018 17:02 (five years ago) link

it's the one I'd spent the least time with too out of the first four and it was great to get properly into it. it doesn't quite have the same highs as Little Earthquakes and doesn't feel as big, but it's broader in sound and more consistently great too

didn't really have any idea what order the top four would end up being in so it's interesting to see Pele come out on top fairly decisively

ufo, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 17:15 (five years ago) link

Top 4 mirrors my boring ranking. In a weird contra-brad moment I went in expecting TVAB to be 5th but ended up replacing it with ADP - after realising that while I love TVAB none of its songs are ones I really can't live without.

Unrepententant Geraldines is fine and I listened to it quite a bit when it came out but yeah it does feel like a lesser, more constricted work than ADP. Also I've said this before I think but ironically her last two albums are really the first time the whole "oh she's just an inferior Kate bush" argument has really made sense to me (now that the people who say that have stopped listening).

Tim F, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 17:57 (five years ago) link

Unrepentant Geraldines is fine but just sort of a lesser Scarlet's Walk. I understand what you mean with Native Invader, like Reindeer King is one of the most Kate Bush songs she's ever done but it's also one of her best since ADP and the whole album's pretty solid, it almost made my albums ballot.

ufo, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 18:05 (five years ago) link

I was one of the two voters for Unrepentant Geraldines - I gave it a listen when it came out and was surprised how much I enjoyed it, having not heard anything post-Choirgirl Hotel at that point (I still haven't heard Night of Hunters or a couple of the others that aren't listed here). Agree with the top two.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 18:10 (five years ago) link

My ballot was [quick math] 47% Little Earthquakes, and that tends to be the only Tori album I go back to with any regularity, so I didn’t know what the more devoted fans considered her best anymore. I do remember From the Choir Girl Hotel being hailed by some as her greatest around the time it was released, but I didn’t know how much of that to attribute to new-album-enthusiasm (see also, OK Computer topping a Q readers poll of the greatest albums ever in late ‘97/early ‘98). Boys For Pele at #1 makes sense, though; it was a dense, difficult album that felt almost calculated to shed her fan base of casual admirers who’d come to her from MTV or Rolling Stone. I do remember mainstream critics typically being baffled by it at the time.

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 11 September 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

BFP came out at the height of my fandom. i remember finding out about it in December ’95 from the list of forthcoming releases at the mall (not sam goody. record town?) and scarfing it down the day it came out. the 2 star Rolling Stone review prompted a hastily scrawled letter to the editor. XD

i guess i’ve only dabbled but never been convinced there’s anything post-TVAB that approaches what she achieved on the first four albums. i’d be happy to be proven wrong but i’m skeptical.

How to Destroy How to Dress Well (lou), Tuesday, 11 September 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

I straight up just don't like BFP all that much, and if FTCH hadn't been as good as it was, I probably would've stopped following her at that point altogether.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 21:13 (five years ago) link

I'm the other unrepentant Geraldines voter, I'll admit I also don't really get it as an album but I love pretty much every song on it.

geoffreyess, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 01:06 (five years ago) link

And like Gavin I hadn't heard anything since Choirgirl at that point -- maybe that was the key?

geoffreyess, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 01:07 (five years ago) link

TBH I'm a little bit surprised with the praise ADP is getting here. It was definitely a more exciting project than the snoozefest of The Beekeeper but it's waaay too long (26 songs?!) and plenty of tracks have some embarrassing lyrical clunkers (Yo George, Dark Side of the Sun etc.). But the worst offender is IMO the actual sound of the record -- it's just so toothless. I know she was going for a rock band vibe but somehow she ended up with Guitar Hero production, lifeless vocals, and tinny drums. Weird, given the fact how brilliantly she managed to incorporate some unhinged rock/electronic/full band elements on Choirgirl and Venus. ADP sounds like a muzak version of them.

Or maybe it's just my ears. Anyway, can't wait to see the songs poll results.

Secret Spell is so much more driven and it's almost a power pop thing while Taxi Ride is extremely dreamy soft rock so there's not much connection between the two to me except they're both highlights of her 00's albums

years go by!

ufo, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:07 (five years ago) link

Pretty Good Year was my #1

Wonderful to see "Mother" so high

It's so weird to see Tori's catalogue ranked like this, I'm starting to think she's not a "singles" artist nor an "albums" artist but this kind of "zeitgeist" artist, it's more her entire existence and strategies toward music-making as a whole that I find so important

fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:08 (five years ago) link

The first time I listened to "Little Earthquakes" my take-aways from "Crucify" were "the line about 'dirty sheets' is really good and might mean something to me when I'm not 14" and "that clave is really mixed loud" and "this song has one too many choruses". My take-aways from "Girl" were "this snare drum is really boring" and "those MIDI strings are frustrating" and "what do flying pigs dream about?" Then "Silent All These Years" came on for the first time and I just was floored, I don't think I'd ever been so immediately sure that a song was perfect upon first listen as I was when I heard that song.

"silent all these years" if anything is MORE powerful now than when i first heard it

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:12 (five years ago) link

which, i first heard it driving home from the airport with my mom, after visiting my (internet) girlfriend for the first time and it was a nice trip but it was full of the same tensions that would eventually cause me to run away from home at 15 to live with my girlfriend for 10 months and essentially trap myself in a very mentally abusive relationship. but before all that, it was just my mom driving us back home, it was 2001 and for some reason a radio station in las vegas was playing "silent all these years," who can say why, thank god they were though, bc it was the most beautiful song i'd ever heard and it still is

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:16 (five years ago) link

god that paragraph is a mess but y'all get it

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:17 (five years ago) link

"pretty good year" is apparently about a tori fan who was way too dramatic about his own life in his letters to her, but as a way-too-dramatic person it has been a personal anthem this year. which despite a lot of [redacted mental illness], still, pretty good

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 14 September 2018 17:20 (five years ago) link

the first four albums are the classics obviously but it's definitely worth digging into some of the later ones even if they aren't quite as special. Scarlet's Walk, American Doll Posse and To Venus And Back are all solid, and I like Native Invader a lot too

ufo, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:39 (five years ago) link

Sister Janet is so low! and Here In My Head! and Carbon! so interesting. I guess it was a poorly showed voting process tho, that's not a lot of points!

never need to hear the LI and UTP singles again.
I regret not voting for She's Your Cocaine. only recently realized how savage the lyrics are lol.
Twinkle became my favorite in the past few years. the piano alone kills me, simple as it is. all the live performances i've seen on Youtube (mostly from the 00s and beyond) don't quite get it right--just a little too fast or busy.

this, on the other hand...

^ This feels like I was being too harsh on TVAB, but while I love that album I just realised I don't feel as close to any of its songs (even "Datura", my favourite) as to the above. But that's not a diss given I didn't even vote for, like, "Girl" or "Baker, Baker" or "Cloud On My Tongue" or "Sugar" or "Cooling" or "Carbon" or...

Sad that Carbon didn't make the top 40, despite three votes. Glad to see that mine wasn't the only vote for Purple People. Weird that Josephine didn't get more votes! my favourite track from TVAB

I think The Waitress is one of her top 10 songs, too, but has been somewhat tarnished (in my mind, anyway) by its live version which I find gruelling

If I voted for covers (I didn't) I'd have voted for "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" lol

fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 14 September 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

I don't know why I didn't top 10 "Silent All These Years".. I think there's a comparative simplicity to its composition that makes me rank it lower within Tori's oeuvre.. but if I were to include a Tori song on a list of "best songs of the 90s" it'd be my pick

glad to see the other dragon voters here

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 14 September 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

Just home from work and catching up with the top 15 -- great choices everyone! I'm a bit surprised that nothing post-90s cracked the top 35, though I suppose it's just a matter of a consensus-averse artist's later work being even less prone to consensus (and, uh, slightly less amazing).

idk i can't help it, at some point when i was a kid i convinced myself the lyric was just a little less sure-footed than the rest of le and that feeling persisted even though it doesn't matter! lovely music behind it ofc

princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 15 September 2018 13:50 (five years ago) link

It definitely points forward to a more oblique lyrical style than the rest of the album. "Somebody leave the light on / just in case I like the dancing / I can remember where I come from" isn't top-tier. But man.. the sudden shift in tone on "he's gonna change my name" wow

fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Saturday, 15 September 2018 13:58 (five years ago) link

he's gonna change my name is outstanding yes, maybe i should work hard at changing my relationship with this song lol

Surprised by how low yes Anastasia and putting the damage charted

Because I was on the road and didn’t vote. Yes, Anastasia could have been a lot higher. Might have quit ILX if it hadn’t charted.

two weeks pass...

Tori influenced my writing to an incredible degree. When she says Ed is watching my every move, that is such an abstract lyricism - perhaps it is Ed the Horse, but Tori always wrote lyrics that allowed one to transpose themselves onto them. Even if she did not give background to these lyrics, she respects the intelligence of the listener to take away their own meaning (much like Lynch). I am grateful she exists and her music changed my life
