Most ridiculous post about 'NTS Sessions 1-4' album on the Autechre thread

I know this has turned into an Autechre fan thread which is great and all but I'd never seen this Whiney poll before and it's the same needlessly cruel vein as the Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith poll a couple years back. I respect the guy tremendously as a writer, so my question is this: was he always this much of a sociopath (on ILX)?

today i would like to celebrate "gonk steady one"

that track had me jumping up and down in my kitchen like an idiot, fist in the air during the livestream

e0 is my favourite at the moment. Still can't make my mind up about this record, so it's probably brilliant

for how long some/all of these tracks are, they breathe a lot and don't ever really get exhausting

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 September 2018 19:03 (five years ago) link

Funny - that's the exact track I'm listening to at the moment when I hopped into this thread today!

octobeard, Thursday, 27 September 2018 21:55 (five years ago) link

No. 3 finally clicked for me last week. The tracks definitely don't develop as much as on the other sessions but I started to see them as sublime machines, maybe repetitive but with a complex and beautiful motion.

In other news, I didn't get around to buying a t-shirt and now they're sold out I'm unaccountably forlorn.

not on headphones!

"four of seven" is a banger that disintegrates into hard ambient cubes. i think it's my favorite now?

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 28 September 2018 18:51 (five years ago) link

tt1pd sounds like a creaky rocking chair (in a good way)

silverfish, Friday, 28 September 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

it has been nice to slowly realize over the course of months how much of this is downright catchy

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 28 September 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link

i've had a couple of moments where a track that hasn't at all been in my go-to list has suddenly popped in to my head and comfortably sat in there for a day or two.

Winner of the 2018 Great British Bae *cough* (ledge), Friday, 28 September 2018 19:39 (five years ago) link

i wasn't big on 'four of seven' at first but now it's one of my favorites. it's a magnificent slow burn. the hooks in that thing are just hard in a really subtle way.

or should that be “shimrepoll air”?

I vote for four separate polls (one for each session)

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 30 September 2018 01:15 (five years ago) link

That would be more manageable if we did one at a time and each one were open for a couple weeks.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 30 September 2018 01:59 (five years ago) link

I thought yr description was cool Brad

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Sunday, 30 September 2018 06:24 (five years ago) link

if we did a poll (ballot poll) of the whole thing then that would give you a result for each individual session.

True but i was just listening to it while watching this and they went together pretty nicely:

This seems as good a place as any to mention that after many years Chiastic Slide has finally clicked with me.

Gavin, Leeds, Sunday, 30 September 2018 10:16 (five years ago) link

finding it difficult to say which session is my favorite. my favorite track seems easier, "shimripl casual" or "four of seven" or "violvoic" or "fLh" ok that isn't easy either

princess of hell (BradNelson), Sunday, 30 September 2018 14:21 (five years ago) link

Yeah I ranked 11 of these tracks 5 stars on my itunes, so yeah, would be a tough poll

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 30 September 2018 20:01 (five years ago) link

'tt1pd' sounds like what you might hear when your head is pushed down in a bucket of ice water for a bit too long. In a good way, if that's at all possible to imagine.

Idk what my fave session is, it's between 3 and 4 probably, but this whole mammoth of an 'album' gnaws away at me deliciously. Not surprisingly the ambient stretches are my fave, so I'd have to say 4 right? But then suddenly a piece like 'shimripl air' comes along, on 3, and it suddenly just... stops the world from turning.

i decided over the weekend my favorite is 3. 2 and 4 close behind

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 20:16 (five years ago) link

3 just kinda has the widest variety of moods and some of the most punishing moments and i keep getting drawn back to both of these things

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 20:17 (five years ago) link

btw much as i dislike the poll at the top of this thread, clearly the winner is

Through 3 of these sessions and I feel I could reduce the 6 hours to about 1.5 for a personal "mini album".

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

I'm really getting into the ambient pieces that initially felt incidental, like 32_areflected and shrimpl casual

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Monday, 1 October 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

ps It's a shambles we're discussing this great album in earnest in one of whiney's many, many dumb throwaway threads. AE deserve better, as do we iirc.

That's cool. 3 seems like 'safest bet' of the 4 sessions, because of its variety, but 'safest bet' not meant in any derogatory way at all.

I will have to go with 4. I always go with 4. Ambient Autechre 4 life.

just get a mod to delete the first two words from the title.

hmm, aside from shrimpl air it mostly feels like relentless machinery to me! in a good way of course. i'd probably rank them 1,2,4,3, though if i carry on listening to them as solidly as i have been that could still change.

in fact i'd say the poles of this hierarchy are v much interrelated things

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 20:26 (five years ago) link

well yeah it's somewhat reductive.

Winner of the 2018 Great British Bae *cough* (ledge), Monday, 1 October 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

Joke's on us probably, I can see AE never having thought of clear distinctions between '1, 2, 3, 4' to begin with.

(a poll between the four discs would be a dumb idea imo but ymmv)

switch ambient ae and machine ae and I'm right there with ya. 4 is the only Session I wouldn't consider voting for in a poll.

ditto, any excuse to revisit, plus I'd love to get some other perspectives to maybe see certain tracks in a different light

i think this one is very nice if you have a quality sound situation, headphones or big loud speakers or whatever, and can just focus on the ingenious little bends in the voicing.
