into the cassette availability

maura, Monday, 10 September 2018 14:46 (five years ago) link

i feel like theyre practicing the 'song evolves into chorus' form of songwriting rather than the 'drop chorus on your head like a bomb' school that has been dominant past ten years ... i appreciate that

01 The 1975

Heh, I was wondering if they'd do this again!

Hi Bono!

the only thing worse than the 1975 are your posts on this thread/forum

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 10 September 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

The 1975 have evolved into a very good band, so naturally I disagree with your original opinion.

cowards for not dropping it on 9/11 imo

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 11 September 2018 16:06 (five years ago) link

how much do y'all want to bet that it has a dfw reference

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 11 September 2018 16:11 (five years ago) link

For some reason I thought this record was supposed to come out in the end of August, so having to wait until the end of November for this is gonna be agonizing

josh az (2011nostalgia), Tuesday, 11 September 2018 16:25 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I ordered the LP plus cassette and signed card package.

Almost went the t-shirt as well. Mainly because, um, its a nice t-shirt.

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 September 2018 20:07 (five years ago) link

this one's my fav so far

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 September 2018 12:32 (five years ago) link

but then i'm always most mesmerized when they make straight up r&b tracks

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 September 2018 12:39 (five years ago) link

oh my god this band really can do anything can't they

ufo, Thursday, 13 September 2018 13:29 (five years ago) link

where can one actually hear this

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 13 September 2018 13:32 (five years ago) link

https://www.mymusic.net.tw/ux/w/album/show/643855 it went up early on this taiwanese streaming site, if you sign in with a fb account you can hear the full song

hello d'angelo dragging beat

lowercase (eric), Thursday, 13 September 2018 13:48 (five years ago) link

cool that it automatically plays on a loop, i think i'll leave it like that till noon

lowercase (eric), Thursday, 13 September 2018 13:55 (five years ago) link

beautiful sax playing.

Nourry, Thursday, 13 September 2018 14:04 (five years ago) link

basically all of the elements of "if i believe you" in the service of a different but related vibe

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 September 2018 14:06 (five years ago) link

iirc there's supposed to be more of this vibe on the album, they mentioned that Mine is a 'jazzy lounge' track in one interview

ufo, Thursday, 13 September 2018 14:08 (five years ago) link

a less dramatic version of "if i believe you", i suppose.
i'm playing it on a loop.

Nourry, Thursday, 13 September 2018 14:11 (five years ago) link

it's maybe a little too obviously a sequel of "if i believe you" but given that that's the best song of all time i am not complaining

This one is probably my favorite out of the four new songs.

Clever bastards.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 September 2018 18:06 (five years ago) link

questlove on the drums or?

Machine Gunk Jelly (Spottie), Thursday, 13 September 2018 18:13 (five years ago) link

November 30 seems so far away.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 13 September 2018 18:25 (five years ago) link

I get why people are referencing "if I believe you" but this has a totally different feel for me, it's much more live-sessiony in a way that stands in contrast to IIBY's studio perfection, more jazzy, I fuck with it tho. that said I'm surprised it's made such an immediate impression on a couple of true heads itt, seems like more of a slow burner

k3vin k., Thursday, 13 September 2018 21:28 (five years ago) link

I almost wish this band would make a bad song so they'd be more relatable or something

k3vin k., Thursday, 13 September 2018 21:28 (five years ago) link

on spotify now btw

k3vin k., Thursday, 13 September 2018 21:35 (five years ago) link

do they have any songs that are 'bad'? I can't think of any I totally dislike

k3vin k., Thursday, 13 September 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

only songs i didn't at least like on contact were "loving someone" and "she way out" and turns out they're both good

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 September 2018 22:15 (five years ago) link

some of the EP songs aren't their best maybe but basically no

J0rdan S., Thursday, 13 September 2018 22:48 (five years ago) link

eric otm with the d'angelo reference.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 13 September 2018 23:32 (five years ago) link

i have 0 problem with them doing more songs like If I Believe You and showing they can be a fantastic r&b band if they really want to be anytime, and the brass arrangement is even better here. not as funny as If I Believe You but what else is?

ufo, Friday, 14 September 2018 00:40 (five years ago) link

at the risk of turricanism, how is this band not named the 1985

mookieproof, Friday, 14 September 2018 01:02 (five years ago) link

I would have been into this band probably a year earlier if they were called the 1985 though now I kind of like their name

New song has a great vibe, though the hook didn't get me the first listen. Suspect this is one that will grow on me

Vinnie, Friday, 14 September 2018 03:11 (five years ago) link

I really liked "Sex" when it came out, but since then, I haven't found any reason to be interested in these guys, so I'm kind of surprised to find myself loving "TooTimeTooTimeTooTime" so much, annoying title aside. My latest favourite entry in whatever we want to call the genre that also (to my ears) encompasses Chvrches, MUNA, Kristen Control and things like that. And yeah, the video is a delight, too.

i cant believe no one mentioned DILLA thats what it sounds like more than dangelo (obviously some overlap there but)

the staggered groove is a total

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 19 September 2018 03:32 (five years ago) link

yeah, questlove's drumming on Voodoo was all dilla-inspired, so they're both apt comparisons. The horns on it are very D'Angelo, too, so I think that's where a lot of the comparison comes from

i'm also proud to say that i didn't get Sincerity is Scary at all when i first heard it but now i absolutely love it

josh az (2011nostalgia), Wednesday, 19 September 2018 03:43 (five years ago) link

the horns are very roy hargrove who was used on a number of soulquarian projects helmed by dilla, Common's 'Like Water For Chocolate" is actually what came to mind for me first

i think matty mentioned dilla by name when talking about the drums on this song on twitter recently

the writer calling the album "snowflake computer" is the worst thing that's ever happened to me but this is a really good interview https://www.nme.com/nme-big-read-1975-2018-2382050-2
