xp -- regardless of one's thoughts on nixon vs. cuomo the air conditioning issue is something neither of them can fix, because it's an issue with cars specific to the 1 and 6 lines, and those cars don't get replaced for about six years (it presumably takes a while to get a replacement of train cars, and they can't pull from lines that run different kinds of cars)

wait, i thought all A-division stock was interchangeable... what would be specific about the 1 and 6? versus the 2, 3, 4, and 5?

but anyway though, cuomo has been governor for eight years - he could have said day one "i am going to build on the recent turnaround in the subway system and prioritize catching up on maintenance and replacing old rolling stock." he didn't. or more recently he could have looked at byford's report-back and said "yup, this is the visionary thinking we need to kick the system into the twenty-first century - we need to fund this urgently, top priority" - he didn't. so at least nixon, by virtue of not being cuomo, hasn't already demonstrated that she doesn't give a shit about teeing up medium- and long-term investments which would include replacement cars.

the cars with the frequently broken air conditioning are R62A cars, almost all of which run on the 1 and the 6 lines (64 cars out of 69 total)

(I haven't been able to find anything that says *why* they only run on the 1 and 6 lines, but I assume there's a reason given that they're the local trains.)

according to signal problems not really, which is counter-intuitively the problem (since that means they're not a priority to be replaced):

man, sounds like a lot of cars have needed replacing for a while. if only new york state had had a governor during the past!

They were still ‘reefing’ old cars up until a few years ago I think? Not actually sure why they stopped.

I think R32s were just a bit too late for the worlds fair. Though the worlds fair train was the r33, confusingly built earlier (the numbers just represent contract order).

varies by line, but on the 1/2/3 I regularly find spacious open cars transformed into cramped misery by a formation of headphone-wearing oblivious columbia undergrads, luggage-toting tourists, et cetera, acting like the random bits of flotsam that turn a cool mountain stream into a mighty, sweaty reservoir

TMZ reports that while filming a recent scene inside a Brooklyn subway station, extras were locked in a train car and allegedly denied their break after two hours of work. "The extras started banging on the subway doors asking to be let out because people needed to use the bathroom, but they were kept inside and eventually resorted to pissing on the tracks through the small spaces between cars," TMZ writes.

found as i was clearing out a recent notebook, quotes from before and after a "showtime" performance a few months ago: "nobody moves, nobody gets hurt" and "Positive, not negative - everyone was safe, no one got kicked in the face." these were delivered amidst the rest of the genial carnival-barker's "step right up" tone, so they are threatening only in their literal content, but what a bizarre world we live in.

Joe Lhota's work is apparently done. The chairman of the MTA announced on Friday that he has resigned from the position, a surprise to many after he insisted last month that he wasn't going anywhere. The 64-year-old Cuomo appointee was rumored to be considering an exit, after facing scrutiny for potential conflicts of interest posed by his numerous side gigs. He will continue to serve as chief of staff at NYU Langone Health, director of the board at Madison Square Garden, and board member of the Friends of the Brooklyn-Queens Connector.

In a statement, Lhota told the Wall Street Journal that he accepted the public position last year for the "sole purpose of halting the decline of service and stabilizing the system for my fellow New Yorkers." While it may not feel like it, that ambition was in fact achieved, according to a man who has not ridden the subway since President Obama was still in office, five hundred thousand or so years ago.

"Joe Lhota has dedicated decades of his life to public service culminating in two tours of duty at the helm of the MTA," Cuomo said in a statement that referred to the mass transit system as a war zone....
