I couldn't find a pic that showed the haemovore makeup clearly AND had them coming out of the water, but the tunics and skin colour are pretty close

I'm in just for Young Coulson and Carol Danvers punching an old lady in the face.

Plinka Trinka Banga Tink (Eliza D.), Tuesday, 18 September 2018 12:51 (five years ago) link

tonally kind of weird for a Marvel trailer. No jokes!

Number None, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 12:54 (five years ago) link

(unless you count punching the old lady)

looks cool!

man, marvel's de-aging tech is getting really good huh

Rather.

I’m impressed how they transformed an actor in skrull makeup into that old lady

two months pass...

Pssh, have fun with your children's movie which is for infants and toddlers (ie, you, who are a baby).

(I'm just mad because I forgot to watch this before my work-instituted YouTube blackout began.)

This little piggy needs his Marvel.

FYI for those interested, we will almost certainly get a leak tomorrow morning of the new Avengers title (I'm banking on Avengers: What The..?. myself) prior to the trailer release, as the tie-in prequel comic is also dropping tomorrow.

all lite up and very romatic (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 13:01 (five years ago) link

It must be so hard to act in these sorts of movies, with rubber suits on and dots on a soundstage in front of a screen, etc.. As an actor, you just have no idea until you see it all put together. You're saying the dumbest stuff and then going pew pew with your fingers and you just have to trust that when the CG magic and music and other stuff kicks in it'll look cool. You'd think that's a lot of pressure on both actor *and* director, but after decades of this they seem to have the rhythm down. Still, it's a miracle it works as often as it does.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 13:12 (five years ago) link

this one is a documentary iirc, no cg required

all other films do have orchestras off-camera playing the score live though

I never cottoned to improv because a scene partner would pretend he was handing me something and I would just be all like, what are you even doing with your clearly-empty hands right now, you look so stupid.

Obviously acting is playing pretend, but it's a relatively recent phenomenon to have characters defined by CG embellishments. I would love to see a Brechtian superhero movie, with superheroes literally going through the motions but with no effects, just pointing their fingers intensely at invisible enemies.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link

so basically Dogville with superpowers

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:03 (five years ago) link

xpost An entirely improvised movie with invisible sets and costumes and props could be funny too. (If it were funny.) Or exhausting.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:03 (five years ago) link

Yeah, Dogville with superpowers.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:03 (five years ago) link

Just long stretches of people reacting in awe to nothing, then defending themselves by wiggling their fingers with a serious look on their face.

Why not just film a bunch of kids playing superheroes in a schoolyard? Same effect.

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:10 (five years ago) link

they generally are not oscar-winning actors. I guess the obvious follow-up question is, would oscar-winning actors play pretend superhero in their backyards any better than kids?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:13 (five years ago) link

Playing a superhero should automatically disqualify you from future Oscar nomination.

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:15 (five years ago) link

And if you won the Oscar first, they should take it away.

Just imagine, the prestige of the Academy Awards being tarnished so.

When I saw that (totally average) Ant-man sequel with Michelle Pfeiffer, then Annette Bening in this trailer, not to mention Jude Law, or youthified Sam Jackson, or Michael Douglas, it occurred to me that within a few years virtually every actor of note or otherwise will have been in a superhero movie. God knows, they might all end up in the same superhero movie at once. Someone should devise a predictive mathematical formula that will lead us to the superhero singularity.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:25 (five years ago) link

They should do an epic green screen Oscars ceremony with space fights and lasers and stuff.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:26 (five years ago) link

they already do that at the golden globes iirc

We're in 2009—it's time to take risks, (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:27 (five years ago) link

Every penny of that Hollywood Foreign Press money is on the screen.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:29 (five years ago) link

i would legit be into watching some bonus disc of one of these movies that is the same full-length cut but with no cgi. backgrounds trailing off into green scene, some props real some props fake, half the cast in tennis balls, etc. it's sorta boring to watch that stuff as behind the scenes footage from some camera off to the side but that'd be cool. otherwise this discussion seems a little silly - like there's something sacrosanct abt the oscars and like there's something tawdry abt being in genre films. actors like acting, sometimes they like to get big paychecks for letting their hair down with some kids' stuff or some juicy silly villain part, same as when british shakespearean types show up in a muppet reimagining of a classic children's tale, or a christ-mas pantomime or w/e they do over there.

With only the grumpy aging gen-Xers as the holdouts (i.e. Ethan Hawke).

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:53 (five years ago) link

Anyone who's dedicated themselves to the craft of acting should hold themselves to a higher standard in their choice of roles imo. Ask any child and they will tell you: if you play pretend, you have to play pretend the right way or you're cheating, and they will tell mommy on you and they will hate you forever.

Mom's out working, for fulfillment (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 14:55 (five years ago) link

"I would assume that the film won't feature her turning into Binary"

based on the trailer, you assumed wrong, OL (can't you go outside for a break and watch on yr device?). What I do not think the film will be featuring is her retreating to another dimension with her rapist, who exited her own womb, placed there via the machinations of a manifestation of Kang, and grew to maturity in 24 hours, also they will not get to her alcoholism (never understood why Busiek thought that was a good idea).

veronica moser, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:01 (five years ago) link

With only the grumpy aging gen-Xers as the holdouts (i.e. Ethan Hawke).

Hawke does his best work in genre movies. I vastly prefer Hawke's horror and SF work to any superhero movie I've ever seen.

I like him in genre stuff (esp shlock like Predestination) but saying it's better work than idk the Before movies or First Reformed is quite a challop

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:11 (five years ago) link

TBF I haven't seen First Reformed yet. I love Schrader, though, so I'm gonna get to it soon.

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 15:17 (five years ago) link

BRB, gonna start a First Reformed thread where we can gab about the cameos in the new Avengers trailer.

should be clear, I don't care if talented actors are in the superhero movies. they certainly make them better, as far as I can tell. and I definitely don't care about the Oscars, but generally speaking, talented actors win them. so it's kind of a tautology, but it seems pretty clear to me that a good actor would do a better job in a superhero movie than a bad actor. I suppose the change in recent years is that superhero movies are attracting good actors. I'm not sure they have much of a choice though. it's sort of like, say, Radiohead being extorted into playing Lollapalooza or some other giant festival. it's not like they can really say no.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 16:06 (five years ago) link

"I suppose the change in recent years is that superhero movies are attracting good actors."

what do you mean by recent years? I would say the first example of "good actors" i.e. respectable by hollywood standards, in superhero genre is Jack Nicholson & Kim Basinger in 1989. Or is it that the Bat films of the 90s are an exception, surrounded by the likes of Spawn, etc?

lol double feature were you in your car for like five hours

sat in lawn chairs for Carol, got into the car for Endgame

due to the 47th parallel, though, apart from going for a piss during the credits, this meant being in the car from 23:45 til 04:15
