Relistened to Carlos, Erasmo today. Had never noticed how much "Em Busca Das Canções Perdidas" is an exotica song - the lyrics too!

"É Preciso Dar Um Jeito Meu Amigo" sounds a lot like a Serge Gainsbourg track; Brazil seems to be the only place that sound was influential on at the time.

i picked up these reissues and the marcos valle ones and i think i am enjoying these more than the valle!

Oh wow. I guess some of the reasons I love those Valle albums so much are extra-musical - the guy's increasing anger and desperation at the military dictatorship, the drowning expression on Previsão Do Tempo. I love how he recruited a different legendary outfit for each record. And he's a badass lyricist.

Would really like to catch up on some other stuff of Erasmo Carlo's, a bit scary with that huge a discography! I'm molded enough by ILX contrarianism to want to check out some of the romantic singer stuff, but I also bet dude's psychedelic and MPB leanings strech further than the albums we've gotten. Off to youtube...

I also came across another bit of Erasmo Carlos-related Dutch chart trivia that was quite shocking to me: Turns out this massive 1987 Dutch hit was a cover of “Verde e Amarelo” by Roberto Carlos, which was co-written bij Erasmo!

(A previous hit by this band (VOF De Kunst) went the other way. They remade their Dutch “Suzanne” as the English “Susanna”, and scored an international smash with it as The Art Company. It was covered in many languages, including Spanish (by Ricky Martin among others). A Portuguese version would have been the icing on the cake, but I couldn’t find one.)

niels, to give some more context to the Jovem Guarda thing you mentioned: yes, they were definitley the Clean Young Kids that you could take home to your parents, like Cliff Richard in the UK or the yé-yé ppl in France. Politicized performers and folkies (using this shorthand though there's a lot of differences between the type of people defending "traditional" music in Brazil and yr Pete Seegers) despised them not only for this, but also for the American influence on their sound, which they would view as cultural imperialism. HOWEVER this also means that once the Tropicália heads came along, those guys were way more sympathetic towards the Jovem Guarda, since they too loved American and British Pop music. Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia covered Roberto/Erasmos songs, Caetano Veloso wrote a song for Roberto. And these were super-credible opponents of the regime.
