If keytar man is so great, why isn’t he listed on The Ubiquitous HIred Gun Session Veteran Shout-Out Thread

The Great Atomic Power Ballad (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 10:28 (five years ago) link

Pardon my ignorance of Billy Joel's public persona, but was he known as a big sniffy sniffy guy at this point? Always seemed pretty clean cut and upright to me, can't really even picture him drinking but again, haven't spent a great deal of time thinking about this. All I know is that he once was married to Christie Brinkley and that most of his songs are pretty lousy

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 4 September 2018 11:24 (five years ago) link

I remember he always used to say 'it's time to tickle the ivory.' And I would ask him, Billy, don't you mean 'tickle the ivories' with an 's'? It took me several years to realize he was referring to the mountains of coke he immediately vacuum up after saying this. I'm...I'm a very stupid man.

Sorry, forgot the attribution on that quote. That would be me, because I just made it up.

Coked up piano humping Billy seems like the kind of guy that would have delivered some Buddy Rich-level shitstorms backstage.

Indeed; none of his backing musicians have beards.

It's sweet how the crowd carry on enjoying themselves despite Billy looking like he might kill someone any minute.

That was just day-to-day life in the USSR iirc.

They might think this is what Western rock stars do every time they play.

This doesn't look anywhere near as exciting:

calstars, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 23:46 (two years ago) link

yeah, i would love to see a thread of musicians throwing childlike tantrums. the more visible drugs onstage, the better

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 23:49 (two years ago) link

oh shit, i've only seen 2 of these 3!

Karl Malone, Thursday, 10 June 2021 00:13 (two years ago) link

whoever got called out by the smash mouth guy should have just sprinted toward him and tackled him

Karl Malone, Thursday, 10 June 2021 00:19 (two years ago) link

Still can’t get over Billy doing the crouch start before running across the stage and jumping on the piano although I’m happy to pretend that this has happened at every BJ show ever and is just one of his ‘things’

omg, in that Green Day video, there is something about Mike Dirnt dutifully smashing his bass right after Billie Joe starts smashing his guitar that is kinda sweet and absolutely fucking hilarious

alpine static, Saturday, 11 September 2021 09:11 (two years ago) link

ok, and then when Smash Mouth guy is pissed off and talking tough, his band launches into the limp-ass intro to "All Star" ... and then he steps out into the crowd like he's gonna fight and someone yells "Kick his ass, sea bass!"

and the Balmer video?

killer post by Old Lunch back in June, is what i'm sayin'

Always seemed pretty clean cut and upright to me, can't really even picture him drinking but again, haven't spent a great deal of time thinking about this.

That reminds me, he once showed up in the bar in Glasgow I routinely used to drink in after work on Fridays, but I missed him. I was never sure if that story was apocryphal but here's the proof:
