Mr. Joel also yelled at people in the front rows who he felt were not responsive enough to his performance.

''Why are you here?'' he screamed. ''You obviously don't want to be here!''

This isn't quite right - he was speaking to a specific set of people with links to the then-government who had received tickets as perks and had little to no interest in being at a Billy Joel gig for any other reason.

Due to a long-standing interest in technology, Dave moved to the S.F. Bay Area and ended up guiding a 15 year evolution of Pro Tools and its family of products, truly revolutionizing the audio industry and garnering an Oscar for technical achievement. He led Avid Technology’s Digidesign audio division as GM for 6 years, generating double-digit growth and managing more than 800 employees and $300M in revenue.

The mic stand smash kills me too.

The piano flip is great mostly cos the musicians see it, briefly react, then just keep playing

I hope those guys found some sort of way to use this clip in some sort of online resume/CV, because any prospective employer has got to be impressed with that level of unflappability.

probably the most difficult thing about searching the internet for crazy billy joel footage is listening to so much billy joel. but you gotta do it

Karl Malone, Sunday, 2 September 2018 22:57 (five years ago) link

xposts it's possible they had seen him done it before. billy was out of control in those days

Karl Malone, Sunday, 2 September 2018 22:57 (five years ago) link

Although security in the audience was tight, hundreds of fans were allowed to crowd the stage. Some of the guards swayed to the music, although many without smiling.

Pardon my ignorance of Billy Joel's public persona, but was he known as a big sniffy sniffy guy at this point? Always seemed pretty clean cut and upright to me, can't really even picture him drinking but again, haven't spent a great deal of time thinking about this. All I know is that he once was married to Christie Brinkley and that most of his songs are pretty lousy

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 4 September 2018 11:24 (five years ago) link

I remember he always used to say 'it's time to tickle the ivory.' And I would ask him, Billy, don't you mean 'tickle the ivories' with an 's'? It took me several years to realize he was referring to the mountains of coke he immediately vacuum up after saying this. I'm...I'm a very stupid man.

omg, in that Green Day video, there is something about Mike Dirnt dutifully smashing his bass right after Billie Joe starts smashing his guitar that is kinda sweet and absolutely fucking hilarious

alpine static, Saturday, 11 September 2021 09:11 (two years ago) link

ok, and then when Smash Mouth guy is pissed off and talking tough, his band launches into the limp-ass intro to "All Star" ... and then he steps out into the crowd like he's gonna fight and someone yells "Kick his ass, sea bass!"

and the Balmer video?

killer post by Old Lunch back in June, is what i'm sayin'

Always seemed pretty clean cut and upright to me, can't really even picture him drinking but again, haven't spent a great deal of time thinking about this.

That reminds me, he once showed up in the bar in Glasgow I routinely used to drink in after work on Fridays, but I missed him. I was never sure if that story was apocryphal but here's the proof:

I felt a little sorry for Green Day at the time because leading up to that show they had become total fucking shills for iheartmedia. I was stuck listening to alot of car radio at the time, and their testimonial promos for the 'festival' were inescapable on all formats; I think there was even one where one of guys talked about how excited he was to see Usher! They got played so hard by ihm.
