I've known Mo for years - she was my first real editor - and I love how she finally seems to have found a high-profile platform. It's only made her voice and writing better.

A podcast I used to do had her on as a guest once or twice and she was always just the nicest.

(Not something I can say about all the American critics/writers we had on who have gone on to bigger and better things.)

I posted it on another thread, but Aziz recently did a small comedy club here. They sent out an email to their mailing list the day before, no press, just saying he was "working out new material" (then he did the same thing a couple days later at a large theater here, still zero press). So at least in that case people could choose whether they wanted to see/support him or not.

the aziz ansari situation is not remotely similar honestly

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Friday, 31 August 2018 01:59 (five years ago) link

i'm not an aziz defender and i would be happy if his career is over because his show sucks, but i don't think it does anyone any favors to compare that strange, ambiguous situation with a guy who repeatedly exposed himself to fellow comics and then pressured them to stay quiet.

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Friday, 31 August 2018 02:02 (five years ago) link

I'm not comparing, I'm just saying that's probably a better approach than showing up unannounced at a club (assuming that he's going to return to stand-up no matter what)

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 31 August 2018 03:25 (five years ago) link

yeah, he can fuck off and die. this shouldn't even be a question.

one month passes...

Many club owners in New York, with an eye on ticket sales, said they would welcome him back.

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 14:47 (five years ago) link

i mean this isn't a bombshell or anything but the driving force behind these shitheads returning to the public eye is always people who know they're gonna make a shitload of money

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 14:49 (five years ago) link

yup :(

k3vin k., Tuesday, 30 October 2018 14:50 (five years ago) link

I'm honestly okay with that. Fuck every asshole who books him or buys a ticket, they've shown that they're awful human beings, but... That's kinda good to know?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link

“So what kind of year have you guys had?” Louis C.K. said, starting off his set. “They tell you that when you get in trouble you find out who your real friends are. It’s black people, it turns out. They’ll stick by you.”

jfc fuck this asshole

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 17:54 (five years ago) link

fuck him for sure, but that is presumably a set-up, not a policy statement. as reporting, it's the equivalent of that horrendous Edinburgh Fringe thread every year.

Sing The Mighty Beat (sic), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link

I lol'd

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link

i'm not particularly concerned about louis ck's livelihood or career but trying to understand the viewpoint here. is there a certain point where he can come back? does he have to make some specific penance or reparations?

XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:15 (five years ago) link

he should give all those women he assaulted (and whose careers he affected) a shit-ton of money, make a public effort at apologizing/rectifying the damage he did, and commit to supporting groups that help women recover from this kind of thing

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:17 (five years ago) link

imo

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:17 (five years ago) link

as someone who was pretty invested in his stuff at one point I would like to have seen a little more contrition/acknowledgement beyond the statement he made right before he went away. since he reappeared it seems to have been a string of woe-is-me jokes. lots of people have written about things people could hypothetically do as amends and they've been linked plenty of times on the Weinstein thread.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:18 (five years ago) link

Οὖτις's suggestions there are a fine start

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:18 (five years ago) link

and since he's already trying to come back without having done almost any of those things, he can fuck off forever imo

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:19 (five years ago) link

got it.
i have to suspect based on his statement way back ("thought it was fine but i mighta been abusing my power"), no statement since, that he hasn't grappled with his own issues / doesn't see the acts as bad but grudgingly forces himself to feel guilty at least in public about some abstract power thing which is easier to deal with.
by that i mean, yeah beating in front of women isn't something that condemns you to the blacklist for life, but i think he's probably still a dangerous man.

XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:33 (five years ago) link

this whole thing reminds me of like when Elvis Costello just kept it moving after the whole N-word thing until everyone just forgot about it. Basically Louis might just be "tweeting through it" as it were

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:38 (five years ago) link

Except none of that first sentence happened?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:39 (five years ago) link

Get Happy!! (1980)
Trust (1981)
Almost Blue (1981)
Imperial Bedroom (1982)
Punch the Clock (1983)
Goodbye Cruel World (1984)
Plus the Taking Liberties B-side comp...

Keeping it moving^

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:53 (five years ago) link

Elvis totally apologized for that wtf

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:05 (five years ago) link

xp Oh, okay sure - but an album a year was his speed up to then too? I read you as saying that he refused to talk about it which is, uh, not the case.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link

yeah he totally talked about it - in interviews, in publicly issued apologies - and then immediately afterwards produced the Specials' first album

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

and people definitely didn't "forget about it"

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

and the analogy sucks

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:08 (five years ago) link

also a public utterance /= actual assault or ruining anyone's career

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:09 (five years ago) link

love this new "I am very bad at comparing things to other things" gimmick that Whiney's trying on here

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:18 (five years ago) link

new?

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:20 (five years ago) link

oh he's had some good ones in the past but he's clearly in his Goodbye Cruel World phase now

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:22 (five years ago) link

ok lol

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:25 (five years ago) link

He apologized and kept it moving, Louis also apologized and now is keeping it moving

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:26 (five years ago) link

Unlike, say, Michael Richards, who apologized and fell of the face of the earth

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:27 (five years ago) link

Louis has not discussed his destructive transgressions publicly the way EC did his totally different transgressions, there's no comparison

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:29 (five years ago) link

Louis made *one* shittily equivocal statement

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:29 (five years ago) link

and then a bunch of public jokes about how hard it's been for him, for which he has been *paid*

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:30 (five years ago) link

like, he is making money off of his "it's funny how I've suffered" routine, it's fucking nauseating

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:30 (five years ago) link

CK could get to Michael Richards level disappearance/punchline for sure. a standup show here and there is one thing, but all the writing, producing, directing, acting gigs are gone and aren't showing signs of coming back yet.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:31 (five years ago) link

when even one of the principal stars of your latest movie thinks no one should see it, you're probably fucked for a good long while

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:32 (five years ago) link

a standup show here and there is one thing, but all the writing, producing, directing, acting gigs are gone and aren't showing signs of coming back yet.

Agreed. Club owners being willing to give you stage time is way different from movie studios/producers being willing to work with you. Also, I don't think he's gonna be lining up any headlining arena shows anytime soon.

grawlix (unperson), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:33 (five years ago) link

Unlike, say, Michael Richards, who apologized and fell of the face of the earth

he fell off the face of the earth a decade before that even happened

frogbs, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 19:47 (five years ago) link

I certainly can’t stomach Louis CK anymore but if people still show up for his shows there’s not really much that can be done

crüt, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 20:11 (five years ago) link

The next day we met for a five-hour conversation. Wearing an unmistakable pair of bright red shoes, Costello was serious about the situation

Forensic journalist Marcus reassures readers that he is fully able to recognise the distinctive form of footwear known as "shoes"
