I've watched the Bamfords she is great

um...I saw Stanhope live and liked it, it had brilliant parts and some cringey parts, but I have mixed feelings about him overall

like I have watched plenty of comedy I just find a lot of stuff not that compelling and I am not as into the whole thing as I used to be I don't think that's unreasonable

and to be honest if a comedian can't grab me in 15 minutes I'm not really interested

the illiza s. one didn't do anything for me

Bad mood. Now I wish I did try to find a way in so I could have heckled. Perhaps it would have been closure for really liking Horace & Pete.

Anyway, new comedians please: really like Caitlin Gill, any others?

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 30 August 2018 03:52 (five years ago) link

I'm not going to pretend I didn't think his stand-up and his show (at times) were genuinely brilliant, insightful, and better than anything produced by 99% of the comedians working today

but I have no desire to hear what he has to say on any subject or watch any project he's involved with ever again

i'm pretty much with this. i really loved some of the bits from season 1 and 2 of his FX show, even as some of the weirder bits (like that stalking the black girl episode) struck me as way, way off. but he should be done, he doesn't deserve another chance (on top of that, assuredly he's comfortable financially for the rest of his life anyway)

Someone bump another comedy thread so we don’t have to talk about goodhearted comedians who have done no sex crimes in this thread

Anyway, fuck this guy. I'm A-OK never hearing from him again.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 30 August 2018 04:08 (five years ago) link

Distinguishing between the artist and his/her act is generally a smooth process for me. Except when so much of said artist's material depends on openly autobiographical elements, in which case we are dared not to dissociate the person from the persona (I'm happy to oblige, for the most part, especially when the living are involved).

pomenitul, Thursday, 30 August 2018 08:28 (five years ago) link

yeah, he can fuck off and die. this shouldn't even be a question.

Yerac, Thursday, 30 August 2018 11:14 (five years ago) link

the hard part for me in terms of ever listening to him is that too much of the weird sex hangups and dysfunction was a part of his comedy, like it feels really tied to what happened, and i guess sort of manipulative in retrospect...i can't really see just laughing at him like a regular comedian again

thought about this more and it feels like the comedy, his whole persona, the way he presented himself as an auteur comedian, even the things he did to help tig notaro, like it feels more than even manipulative, it feels like it was part of his process of being a predator, a cover or a way to set himself up in a way he knew that would be hard to criticize

What is shitty is that he didn't even have the common sense to not make his Comedy Cellar bit a surprise? He is smart, he knew women would be there, and he knew some women just don't want no part in this.

he knew women would be there, and he knew some women just don't want no part in this

let's be honest, this was by intention, that's what he enjoys about it

Good thread from Jen Kirkman:

I didn’t have proof he did any of this masturbation stuff. Only rumors. He verbally did some sick stuff to me. I got harassed so bad for speaking on it with no one in my community to back me up I stopped. He apologized. And lied to me about the others. This is the mess of it all. https://t.co/DeQ9U9pM91

yeah, the "there's no way she didn't know" argument has always irritated me. people often don't know these things! especially when known liars are involved!

The comedy community seems to police itself better when it comes to joke stealing.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 30 August 2018 18:35 (five years ago) link

Joke stealing happens in public in front of hundreds of people.

What is shitty is that he didn't even have the common sense to not make his Comedy Cellar bit a surprise?

Not suggesting he should be trying to come back at all, but this is not how this works.

He is smart, he knew women would be there, and he knew some women just don't want no part in this.

Seems plausible to me that this issue simply wouldn't have occurred to him. ( <- a criticism, not an excuse)

I know that's not really how Comedy Cellar works.

But yeah, it doesn't matter how that club functions, he doesn't give a shit and that's abhorrent.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 August 2018 22:06 (five years ago) link

Yeah, he could have just worked another club where that isn't an issue.

not about CK, but the only room I know of that announces "names" doing new is Giant Dwarf, and they charge punters double what regular rooms do for the privilege. this is not a better way of doing things. how many of the rooms you go to even list everyone who's going up that night at the door, let alone in advance?

about CK: he shouldn't have done bland material after his time away. he shouldn't have done rape whistle jokes. he should have had empathy for other people that would be in the venue. he probably shouldn't be going back onstage in any circumstances. but if he HAD been introspective, if he HAD examined what a horrible destructive prick he was, if he WAS writing something that tore down his previous work and advanced better viewpoints or shouted out and raised up his victims, it wouldn't be better if he were charging $30 a ticket in advance to watch him write it.

anyway we should all shut up except for Mo Ryan, Jen Kirkman, and any of the other victims whose names we don't remember for bad reasons, instead of talking about this masturbating thumb man

Truly excellent article. It doesn't matter one bit that "that's not how the comedy cellar works", it seems that to be a woman on that ocasion, in that cellar, in that circumstance is to submit. There's no room for anyone, any woman particularly, to be the dissenting voice in that space for fear of reprisals and at the risk of abuse, further abuse than the abuse already inflicted on the woman in the audience by simply being there at the wrong time.

@NoamDworman you've been trying for 9 months to poke holes in our story and it's getting really painful. Critically think about this- After a late show at a comedy festival that you worked your ass off to get in to, all the bars are closed, and the headliner who we thought we had

I've known Mo for years - she was my first real editor - and I love how she finally seems to have found a high-profile platform. It's only made her voice and writing better.

I posted it on another thread, but Aziz recently did a small comedy club here. They sent out an email to their mailing list the day before, no press, just saying he was "working out new material" (then he did the same thing a couple days later at a large theater here, still zero press). So at least in that case people could choose whether they wanted to see/support him or not.

the aziz ansari situation is not remotely similar honestly

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Friday, 31 August 2018 01:59 (five years ago) link

i'm not an aziz defender and i would be happy if his career is over because his show sucks, but i don't think it does anyone any favors to compare that strange, ambiguous situation with a guy who repeatedly exposed himself to fellow comics and then pressured them to stay quiet.

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Friday, 31 August 2018 02:02 (five years ago) link

I'm not comparing, I'm just saying that's probably a better approach than showing up unannounced at a club (assuming that he's going to return to stand-up no matter what)

Many club owners in New York, with an eye on ticket sales, said they would welcome him back.

“So what kind of year have you guys had?” Louis C.K. said, starting off his set. “They tell you that when you get in trouble you find out who your real friends are. It’s black people, it turns out. They’ll stick by you.”

jfc fuck this asshole

fuck him for sure, but that is presumably a set-up, not a policy statement. as reporting, it's the equivalent of that horrendous Edinburgh Fringe thread every year.

i'm not particularly concerned about louis ck's livelihood or career but trying to understand the viewpoint here. is there a certain point where he can come back? does he have to make some specific penance or reparations?

XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:15 (five years ago) link

he should give all those women he assaulted (and whose careers he affected) a shit-ton of money, make a public effort at apologizing/rectifying the damage he did, and commit to supporting groups that help women recover from this kind of thing

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:17 (five years ago) link

imo

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 30 October 2018 18:17 (five years ago) link

as someone who was pretty invested in his stuff at one point I would like to have seen a little more contrition/acknowledgement beyond the statement he made right before he went away. since he reappeared it seems to have been a string of woe-is-me jokes. lots of people have written about things people could hypothetically do as amends and they've been linked plenty of times on the Weinstein thread.
