apropos of all the tori amos discussion, I just heard this album by Italian artist Beatrice Antolini while browsing spotify related artists. it came out in february so way too late to pitch anywhere, but the whole thing blew me away, and while it's not derivative at all, a lot of it in particular reminds me of From the Choirgirl Hotel. (the other reference point would be the new Fever Ray if it used more guitars).

this, for instance, is already good before it goes into a giant "Raspberry Swirl" breakdown.

(and I actually like the album art)

uh wow that track is fantastic, will certainly check out the album soon. "what if Tori had pushed her electronic experiments further into dance music territory after Choirgirl Hotel" is something I've wanted for a long time

ok i love this album, thanks for the recommendation

ufo, Thursday, 30 August 2018 02:44 (five years ago) link

A long time ago a mailorder sent me the Moves Like You CD single instead of the Unrest Cath Carroll one I ordered... that was a happy accident. I listened to it about a million times.

The entire England Made Me album is very good, kinda got lost in the shuffle in the last days of Factory...

xp -- glad you liked it! I don't listen to/know about nearly enough Italian artists. sadly Spotify is a dead end as far as related artists but she does do vocals on this, which is entirely my sort of thing and 17-year-old me would have disintegrated

^ that's lovely

(anyone happen to know if the sleeve is original or a splash panel? only knowing Crepax in translation, it's great to see lettering integrated like that)

i was about to say pretty much the only italian music i know is italian prog and is probably nothing like the above, but damn that is italian prog! goddamn i love italian prog so much.

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Thursday, 30 August 2018 23:36 (five years ago) link

(also the eight and a half minute song is the shortest one on the record, lol that is so prog)

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Thursday, 30 August 2018 23:37 (five years ago) link

That opening verse reminds me of something, and it's going to make me crazy trying to figure out what. Then the crazy organ riff comes in and they're in full-on Opeth territory.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 31 August 2018 02:52 (five years ago) link

Definitely a fair share of this vibe in there

fwiw i gleaned this from katherine's spotify a few years ago (before i became too lazy to keep up)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyI6RqG76as

i would describe it as very madder rose, which is a+ for me. bonus: canadian!

mookieproof, Saturday, 1 September 2018 00:15 (five years ago) link

that album is really good, although I haven't really listened to it since I bought a physical copy on Toronto (they're Canadian) and the person at the record store made a comment that I couldn't tell whether it was making fun of me (the record was in the bargain bin)

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 6 September 2018 14:47 (five years ago) link

anyway, what I came to this thread to post is this, since I will never tire of dark/steely synthpop (not sure why that was phrased like a dual pokemon type)

I also might have posted this in one of the pop threads, no idea, but I've really liked this Irish group Sleep Thieves' work the past couple of years. the vocals on this in particular are very "if you work hard enough, anyone can become dave gahan"

Katherine, so many of your posts are about what music you dislike! What would you say is your top 5 albums so I can get a better handle on your aesthetic

5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 11 September 2018 18:13 (five years ago) link

this is not really a representative list, and it's also eight, not five, but:

Throwing Muses, 1986 s/t and/or Kristin Hersh, Sunny Border Blue
Tychonaut, Love Life
Kate Bush, The Dreaming and/or The Red Shoes
Tori Amos, From the Choirgirl Hotel
Massive Attack, Mezzanine and/or Blue Lines
Fiona Apple, When the Pawn and/or Idler Wheel
Stina Nordenstam, The World Is Saved and/or Dynamite
Ladytron, Witching Hour and/or Velocifero

Your move, Whiney. (I know you won't follow up your bait-post, getting an actual honest answer here)

Solid list too, Katherine.

I honestly didn't know whether it was bait but I do post too much about music I dislike

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 11 September 2018 19:44 (five years ago) link

I love Sunny Border Blue. The whole second half of that album is just stellar introspective pop.

xp It was bait. It's Whiney's default mode.

Nevertheless your list rocks.

The first Throwing Muses album is amazing. I'm a fan of University too, particularly "Flood."

Man, that first Muses album on 4ad is a watershed mark. That thing is so brilliantly unique. I saw the reunited Muses play the Great American Music Hall around the time that 50`Wave was just coming around and they closed their set with 'Vicky's Box.' Pretty fucking rad.

violinist cora venus lunny has played on a lot of my favorite records, and I had no idea she (fairly recently, it seems) has solo work out: https://www.patreon.com/trancebranches

omg this is great! she plays the viola! nobody plays the viola! and she has a record out that's a response to bartok's violin sonata, which i apparently have not ever heard before (???) even though bartok is my favorite composer ever?

this thread is a treasure

christ, i'm off, now i'm looking for great recordings of bartok's violin sonata, and the first thing i run across is this thread, which was started in 2004 by... cora venus lunny...

plus i've been listening to yehudi menuhin, the violinist who commissioned the work, all week.

no idea if this is the same vocalist from Babydrum (seems more likely than not) (really regret missing the boat on hearing their full tracks), or when these came out, and these may be the only two tracks ever to be in existence by her; however, they're quite promising, and more wistful than par

maykay from fight like apes tweeted about this Irish indie group PowPig, which is already nearly an instant listen for me, even if they didn't so often remind me of early throwing muses demos. this in particular is possibly the best song that will ever be written about The Room

someone made an aggregator that shows you a random YouTube video uploaded with the default name, and within the first five refreshes it turned up someone who appears to be someone affiliated with the whole post-weeknd thing.

sleep thieves' fortress EP was one of my favorite records of last year (as usual like an idiot I forgot to pitch it anywhere); I went on their soundcloud to see what tracks they liked, and this was the first among them; I was on the fence until the strings around 1:00. more of those, everywhere.
