Vancouver/Canada is filled with these types of people with bizarre diets based on pseudoscience, except a lot of them are vegetarian or vegan

It’s not surprising the same culture creates an environment where there are loonies that have wacky meat diets and/or give baseless advice

the most interesting part of the atlantic article to me was the psycjosomatic explanation for the daughter’s real and serious symptoms disappearing—that simplifying your diet can drastically eliminate stress.

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Thursday, 30 August 2018 00:46 (five years ago) link

they're *lying*. they are not eating only beef. that the atlantic did a remotely credulous article about this just says a lot about the atlantic.

I’d believe meat and greens. I can envision someone doing that. Not solely beef, salt and water though.

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Thursday, 30 August 2018 00:48 (five years ago) link

And vodka and bourbon of course.

does joe rogan deliberately invite people who make him sound like an incredulous voice of reason by comparison?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 30 August 2018 01:44 (five years ago) link

probably, but also he's just not very bright

Josefa, Thursday, 30 August 2018 02:18 (five years ago) link

I listened to one of his podcasts on which he had a reasonable person and a crackpot on together and Rogan angrily, vehemently sided with the crackpot

Josefa, Thursday, 30 August 2018 02:22 (five years ago) link

Joe Rogan has done a good job legitimizing far right crackpot by showing they can hang with him, an affable stoner bro who likes to work out and sometimes, like, get deep and shit

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Thursday, 30 August 2018 02:29 (five years ago) link

i've known some actually pleasant affable stoner bros and i feel like you're doing them a disservice with your comparison.

macropuente (map), Thursday, 30 August 2018 03:09 (five years ago) link

I once went through a ridiculous elimination diet regime a bit like what this Peterson woman has done, though nowhere near as insane as hers (I was reduced to plain meat, pears, plain oats and stuff - I still got all my vitamins in other words)

And in hindsight I frankly think I was convinced psychologically that salicylic acid was "bad" for me. That amines were "bad" for me. That if I ate a few traces of tomato or cheese or wtf ever I was suddenly down with a headache or itchy skin IT WAS ALL FUCKING PSYCHOSOMATIC. I wasted a lot of time, money and energy on utter BS.

That's a subject for another thread but boy criticizing other's people diet is never a good look. I can't stand it when people do it to me. It's the kind of shit the Jordan Petersons of this world pulls on other innocent people who would just like to eat whatever they want, I won't play that game.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 August 2018 03:46 (five years ago) link

lotta negativity in this thread, you guys gotta lay off the apple cider, it's basically depression juice

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 30 August 2018 03:55 (five years ago) link

I dont want to critique anyone’s diet but the bizarre and intrue apple cider anecdote is clearly and objectively hilarious

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Thursday, 30 August 2018 04:08 (five years ago) link

I'm sorry but anyone eating red meat and literally nothing else is lying or heading for an early grave, I dont think thats beyond reproach?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 30 August 2018 04:12 (five years ago) link

pointing out that the human body can literally not survive on 25 days of no sleep and eating nothing but red meat is not criticizing someone's diet

Οὖτις, Thursday, 30 August 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

criticizing people's diets is never cool, unless it's jordan peterson's diet

you could probably go a long time just eating red meat without dying. it would be miserable. meat and greens i think would probably not be THAT unsustainable, if you rotated your greens and stuck to leaner meats.

just eating meat is totally congruent with his "ideology". pseudo-scientific and masculinist

"soy boy" is not insult of choice for his acolytes for no reason. eating a plant-based diet is effeminate in their world

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 30 August 2018 16:15 (five years ago) link

Soy isnt great for you tbf. Vegetables are—you need to war vegetables to be optimally healthy this is like the only health consensus.

Inuits traditionally do fine eating little to no vegetables, although the range of animal protein they eat is far different from what non-Inuits can access

inuits traditionally gather and eat as much plant matter as they possibly can and only don't have a culture of growing plants because their environment doesn't allow for cultivation

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 30 August 2018 17:09 (five years ago) link

How much can they gather in the winter though? I don't know, but I'm guessing it's pretty minimal?

Inuits also eating fish, which is not red meat

some plants can be gathered in winter, including some berries which are found through digging in the snow. inuit also use preservation, drying, and fermentation. storing plants and meat for the winter in seal fat or inside a dried seal etc.

their diet was still hugely meat-based obviously. they ate more of a range of meat than mr peterson though obv - fish, caribou, seals

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 30 August 2018 17:37 (five years ago) link

(sorry for using the past-tense, referring to the traditional diet which has been impacted by modernity, climate change, etc.)

one of the great sins of soy from the "just eat meat" crowd is that it contains phytoestrogens

Drink liquor
Not apple cider
Mostly bourbon

phytoestrogens might be bad or they might be good

It’s fine to avoid soy, other legumes, grains, sugar and alcohol if you want. Eating only meat though is not fine.

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Thursday, 30 August 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link

It’s also fine to be a vegan and eat tons of soy. Any diet that is not like based on active self harm is fine. Standard american diet probably not fine

If you don’t exercise, eating a lot of meat can probably cause digestive problems and bowel problems, which can cause illnesses

I guess if you have a good digestive system and eat the right amount of meat and don’t move much it might work, but I’m doubtful

Red meat is difficult to digest on its own, without the aide of exercising and/or fibre

But i do believe different types of bodies call for different types of diets, so a vegetarian diet can actually be harmful to someone but beneficial to another
