To me the best outcome would be for protesters to repeatedly interrupt his shows

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 19:37 (five years ago) link

not mutually exclusive!

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 19:38 (five years ago) link

these outcomes are nice or schadenfreude or whatever but they don't do shit for the women involved

tbf I don't think you can undo that kind of trauma

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 19:40 (five years ago) link

the trauma cannot be undone, but the career repercussions can

I just think he'll sell out every show he books in this hellworld, I guess. :/

Shakey OTM in last three posts

Louis has played arenas, but they weren't where most of his dates took place over the last (say) 15 years, and he wasn't playing ten nights in a row. saying he was bigger than Kevin Hart or Michael McIntyre is an absolute non-starter.

ok fair enough, still like top 5 or what have we if we're talking about box office, and the one who commanded most column inches etc.

I haven't searched, but there must be interviews with people who went to Cosby's last tour or two. I'm assuming they would be oblivious, or assume he's innocent, or just have a lack of judgement toward someone who makes them laugh really hard. Kind of the James Brown / R. Kelly rationale (which I'm not defending) of not wanting to abandon something that really works for you, and somehow being able to dissociate the performance from the violence.

Yung Detective (Eazy), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link

there's also the depressing possibility that enough people don't give a shit about this kind of thing and for a smaller (god I hope) percentage it makes them like the person better

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:49 (five years ago) link

apparently Cosby dates were relatively sparsely attended given the venues, and largely by seniors who really don't keep up on the news. he's been for old ppl since he was middle-aged.

that Forbes article seems to only be about US comedians, and there's no sourcing on their $52 million estimate for CK. He's said he was out of liquidity after spending 2 million on the first four episodes of Horace & Pete, and had to borrow to continue production.

(he also said it was no big deal, that he'd be able to pay back the loan on live dates, but unless he's got a REALLY bad alimony set-up, $52 million income should have left him with more than 2 million cash-on-hand. even John Cleese only had to pay a million a year.)

▫◌▫ (sic), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:55 (five years ago) link

how many wives did that cover?

faculty w1fe (silby), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link

just the last one

he did consecutive live tours billed as "A Ludicrous Evening with John Cleese ... or How to Finance Your Divorce" and "The Alimony Tour" for several years

Michael McIntyre is a complete nobody here. Peters is bigger, but nowhere near Hart's level. Those guys play three-thousand seaters here.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

I only wish he was a complete nobody here.

Scottish Country Twerking (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 21:10 (five years ago) link

yes, Michael McIntyre is a nobody everywhere but in the UK. the UK is still part of "the world", and he's ludicrously huge there.

Curious what this would actually look like? It seems like the only way for him to directly help their careers would be to be involved somehow, which obv would not work (like, I don't think any of his victims would want to go on tour with him). Finance a special or something?

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 21:13 (five years ago) link

we regret to report that it turns out McIntyre can now also sell out arenas in South Africa and Australia

Me neither

I wouldve assumed Hart was highest paid performer. I mean, jerry doesnt even tour.

that's kind of my point, we have very few, if any, societal structures to make this happen, whereas we have a ton to let people like Louis CK get back to business as if nothing happened

In America, he's middling at chuckles

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

So you've admitted to sexually assaulting comedians in a work culture where fellow people of power took actions to keep the victims not working and quiet about the offenses so that you could make millions and keep working. HOW DO YOU ATONE FOR YOUR SINS? A THREAD OF SOLUTIONS.

US comedians not very popular in the UK, UK comedians not very popular in the US - that's only like the entire history of stand up comedy.

US comedians tell jokes like this

UK comedians tell jokes like this

Number None, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 22:08 (five years ago) link

(xp) I don't know what that means tbh.

Scottish Country Twerking (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 22:11 (five years ago) link

I don't know if it's just a UK/US thing. More established acts like Eddie Izzard and Billy Connolly still draw here. TV famous guys like Gervais and Brand do well.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 22:14 (five years ago) link

i love daddy was pretty clear proof that CK is monumentally fucked in the head

true but if there weren't lots of them the environment wouldn't evolve a Maria Bamford so it's worth it as long as I don't have to listen to most of it

Louis IDK

Scottish Country Twerking (Tom D.), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 23:19 (five years ago) link

If his art actually meant something his fans would be more invested in him having a comeback. As it is they seem fine with him fading away, which is fine by me. But—to take another example—literally no one who loved the smiths refuses to listen to “there is a light that never goes out” anymore. They might not want to support morrisey financially or whatever but the songs are still obviously good no matter what he does.

But yeah, it took a scandal to reveal the mediocrity of “Louie” imo. There isn’t life in it; enjoyment is dependent on whether you find louis himself sympathetic and affable.

🦅 (Trϵϵship), Wednesday, 29 August 2018 12:39 (five years ago) link

In the case of aziz ansari people seem actually excited that they don’t need to pretend to like master of none anymore. Everyone seems to have forgotten that, at the time, his scandal was considered to have been more of a miscommunication than an isntance of harassment.
