that Amanda Shires sounds good on first listen, thanks for the recommendation

did you post it on the country thread?

niels, Monday, 20 August 2018 07:20 (five years ago) link

it's gorgeous and of course it's a drug album

dyl, Monday, 20 August 2018 08:13 (five years ago) link

Velvet Elvis sounds a lot like happy pills by Norah Jones.

Re drug album, slow burn does mention “good on green” yeah.

Ross, Monday, 20 August 2018 11:23 (five years ago) link

I'm sure she did drugs but it's not really a drug album

by this measure like 85% of all records made in the 70s and 80s are drug albums

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 August 2018 13:02 (five years ago) link

Yeah agree

Ross, Monday, 20 August 2018 13:07 (five years ago) link

It’s just a few stray references

Ross, Monday, 20 August 2018 13:07 (five years ago) link

Velvet Elvis sounds a lot like happy pills by Norah Jones.

Interesting comment, as I like both songs (though not sure I hear too strong a similarity?)

whenever I listen to this I always see Wonder Woman and realize I'd forgotten that song existed

No. Feel free to introduce it, it's a great great record.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 20 August 2018 14:08 (five years ago) link

it's great, the only talk of it was (unfortunately) on the worst music writing re: Xgau being a creep about her

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 August 2018 14:21 (five years ago) link

WONDER WOMAN is a trademark of DC Comics. All Rights Reserved.

Re drug album, slow burn does mention “good on green” yeah.

It's also called slow burn

Number None, Monday, 20 August 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link

But if anything she's cut back on the weed refs

Number None, Monday, 20 August 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link

"Slow Burn (A Doobie of Weed, Get It?)" was the original title

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 20 August 2018 17:39 (five years ago) link

Anyone else hearing traces of "Owner of a Lonely Heart" in "Lonely Weekend"?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Sunday, 2 September 2018 13:39 (five years ago) link

How so

yes, said (Ross), Sunday, 2 September 2018 16:47 (five years ago) link

i guess 'of-a-lo' and 'it's-a-lo' are similarly placed and basically equivalent melodically

dyl, Sunday, 2 September 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link

one month passes...

album rules

it's very existential really, kinda zen, I really hope she's got a long career ahead of her

Amazing record - occasionally I turn it up and am swept away. Still got no time for “Space Cowboy” and “Velvet Elvis” grates sometimes.

Anyone who loves this, I can recommend “Same Trailer Different Park” - some killer songs there.

I wish I loved this record. Her wan approach kills it.

love this album i even have time for space cowboy

Mordy, Thursday, 4 October 2018 13:39 (five years ago) link

What does "wan approach" mean ? (sorry, tried to look it up but only got tech explanations, which I doubt are related to the matter !)

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 4 October 2018 13:51 (five years ago) link

Same Trailer is certainly all time

niels, Thursday, 4 October 2018 14:08 (five years ago) link

this album was the biggest musical surprise for me this year.I had never heard of her until High Horse came up on my Release Radar so i went to the album and just fell in love with the production and vibe.

Her singing.

Ah ok, so you don't like her voice/singing ?

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 4 October 2018 14:59 (five years ago) link

Her "wan approach" is actually a perfect fit for the songs, the production and the all-around vibe. Her performance completes the album.

IMO, of course.

alpine static, Thursday, 4 October 2018 17:46 (five years ago) link

yeah it's hard for me to imagine the album with more powerful/commanding vocals? i do think that something like "rainbow" also really benefits from a certain narrowness of range. the whole album is just sort of meditative, even the real emotional moments

J0rdan S., Thursday, 4 October 2018 18:01 (five years ago) link

probably album of the year, every time i come back to it i get a lovebuzz

flopson, Thursday, 4 October 2018 23:35 (five years ago) link

I would rank :
1/ Pageant Material : great songs, melodies, lyrics , production
2/ Golden Hour : amazing production and arrangements, fantastic melodies but the lyrics are a bit impersonal/generic love songs(and less fun)
3/ Same Trailer Different Park : very nice songs, cute/clever lyrics, great first album
And I love her voice. It's strong and emotional.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 5 October 2018 14:36 (five years ago) link

my ranking would be opposite but it's all good

niels, Friday, 5 October 2018 15:33 (five years ago) link

You can't be everybody's cup of tea !

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 5 October 2018 15:37 (five years ago) link

Pageant material is def her weakest ! Also kind of a rehash of same trailer

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 5 October 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it has enough keepers for an excellent EP but it felt like it needed more time in the oven

Number None, Friday, 5 October 2018 15:55 (five years ago) link

Really !? I think it has so many great songs ! More than Trailer and deeper/more interesting than Golden Hour...

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 5 October 2018 16:24 (five years ago) link

GH has the best melodies and production/arrangements though

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 5 October 2018 16:26 (five years ago) link

I erased Pageant Material, kept two songs.

You like queer? I like queer. Still like queer. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 5 October 2018 16:27 (five years ago) link

She’s such a great melodist

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 5 October 2018 16:28 (five years ago) link

Well if you don’t like her voice, I suppose it’s more difficult to enjoy her work ! How many songs did you keep from GH ?

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 5 October 2018 16:29 (five years ago) link

Did you keep "Late To The Party"?

Ubering With The King (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 5 October 2018 16:35 (five years ago) link

The first four sound good to me but LTTP is definitely a level above

Number None, Friday, 5 October 2018 16:36 (five years ago) link

"Dime Store Cowgirl" and the title track are good, but the three PM essentials for me are "Die Fun", "Miserable" and "Late to the Party".

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Friday, 5 October 2018 16:44 (five years ago) link

I really love the debut, hated that Mind Your Own Biscuits song so much I never got Pageant Material, and her recent singles' Dolly-goes-disco steez I appreciate in theory but it's not really the kind of thing that plays to her strengths imo.

Οὖτις, Friday, 5 October 2018 16:47 (five years ago) link

« Die Fun » is so good

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:28 (five years ago) link

i liked pageant material a lot at the time -- i listened to it again earlier this year and i still see the charm in it but it's seems clearly her third best album to me. i still appreciate it tho bcuz she was mining a very specific set of her influences. but the songs on "same trailer" are more clever and from a production/songwriting standpoint golden hour is like, in another strata

J0rdan S., Friday, 5 October 2018 18:47 (five years ago) link

when she hits the chorus on "Golden Hour" it's the most blissful thing imo

omar little, Friday, 5 October 2018 18:52 (five years ago) link

Basically, I simply like her work a lot, mostly the 2nd and latest albums (I like the 1st one but less).
I don’t really understand how one can love the 1st one and hate the 2nd one (or vice versa) though... they’re so close !
The 3rd one is something else : less country, more mainstream pop, so I can understand how one could like it but dislike her previous output.

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 5 October 2018 22:42 (five years ago) link

I like this album a lot but I also miss"Blowin' Smoke" Kacey

Heez, Friday, 12 October 2018 02:32 (five years ago) link

I think I like each album less than the first but love them all.
