and a case being made that even with this total lack of controversial or objectionable content, the mods should somehow be more active..

i dunno. seems like we're back to a conversation about what ilx is

which leads to a conversation about what it uses to be

and nowadays thats a load of posters who arent rly very good ilxors (inc yrs truly) taking lazy halfremembered potshots about very good former ilxors because ilx used to be great and mean and now its neither

A couple posters were banned because of a Swans beef that devolved into some “interesting” opinions on women, though the more egregious one was also pretty much stalking an ILXor across board over another weird issue.

That was a pretty long time ago, at least a year maybe?

I don't understand why "great" has to be synonymous with "mean." I deal with enough meanness in my day-to-day life and I really don't need any more of it

deems likes the kind of entertainment supplied by meanness, when it is inventive meanness. old-ilx was often mean in inventive and colorful style. it suited his tastes better than present day ilx suits him. but ilx persists and he still arrives every day to punch in.

all I can say to that is this kind of personal taste completely baffles me and I'm completely incapable of understanding the worldview of someone who wants that

there's also a complicated relationship between civility and quality of posts. it's *possible* that if nobody is allowed to call anybody else a numbskull then the numbskull population might run out of control

(given that we all have numbskullery within us)

To prevent numbskullery you just need to educate and lead by example and lead a blameless life like I do

i think Jesus is a historical example of how that attitude just attracts numbskulls tbh

whereas a lot of Zen masters seem to have inculcated wisdom in their apprentices by judicious application of a big stick

this is completely bizarre to me, like going to the doctor and being told "you sprained your wrist but we're not going to do anything about it, come back when you have heart failure or something"

mods used to be way more obvious, but a) ILX is less rambunctious now and b) it was realised about ten years ago that modding quietly caused fewer shitstorms re: modding

out-and-out trolls do get removed by mod action

a bunch of FPs on one post will also raise mod attention & discussion, it's not a fully automated SB system

if ppl want a post edited or deleted, MRF is still there and used regularly, and has been for about 16 years

as deems keeps saying, this has been litigated in literally thousands of posts over the last decade
