this is the first time I have heard of this, yes

i think when the system was first implemented katherine 51 was a sufficient number so that it wasn't about people "personally" disliking somebody but that if somebody made enough posts that annoyed enough people the board wasn't made worse by them taking a break for a month or two.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

i think banning should be reserved for people like that guy l4rry 4appl3t0n who make people super uncomfortable

Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

the system mostly works but it can be very slow sometimes.

fairly recently we had a couple of longtime regular posters permabanned (and never to return) by the mods before they hit 51, at least one of them had it coming for a very long time.

there was another longtime regular who was banned, then returned after 30 days, and has seemingly left. though it should have been a mod permaban in the first place, it was another one that would have been deserved.

^^^all of these were related to men being habitually unable to not be creepy about women.

oh and adam bruneau self-permabanned recently. not sure what broke him, but he did seem to have some issues with The Last Jedi that may have destroyed him.

omar little, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

larry apps was imo harmless compared to others who were given a longer leash but ymmv

omar little, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link

"posters lik x or y should never be banned" is a statement so facile as to be utterly useless

poster x should be banned if they behave like asses long enough tlor badly enough to get 51d

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link

totally respect other posters differing opinions about this too but it's very hard to point to an example of somebody being 51'd when they hadn't been pretty antagonistic to a broad circle of posters for a reasonable period of time

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link

xp well theres a lot to argue with in all of that omar im not even gonna start tbh

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link

it just seems like there should be some middle ground in moderation between nothing and month-ban

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link

If dom would just be unbanned...

Wait no

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:59 (five years ago) link

Noodle Vague is correct imo

Οὖτις, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:59 (five years ago) link

(that nothing isn't "week ban" or "day ban," it's something like moderators stepping in and temporarily locking a thread)

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:59 (five years ago) link

Speaking as someone who got a 6 day tempban for offensive socking i can attest such middle ground exists

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:59 (five years ago) link

xp

but then one idiot in theory could stop a bunch of non-idiots in mid conversation?

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

Problem is other people start a thread called WHYD U LOCK THE THREAD U IMMORAL NAZI GOEBBELS MODS

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

it just seems like there should be some middle ground in moderation between nothing and month-ban

mods can do all and everything they could before fp came in about a decade ago, and sometimes they will step in with deletions or a tempban but tbh ive not seen the likes in some time

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:01 (five years ago) link

who are we talkin about here omar? xp

was this all in the past six months when i was living in seclusion among the wolves?

Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:01 (five years ago) link

mods can do all and everything they could before fp came in about a decade ago, and sometimes they will step in with deletions or a tempban but tbh ive not seen the likes in some time

this is completely bizarre to me, like going to the doctor and being told "you sprained your wrist but we're not going to do anything about it, come back when you have heart failure or something"

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:02 (five years ago) link

well you seem to be talking about a specific instance where you didn't like a conversation that was happening

tbh mods shouldn't react to that imo

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:03 (five years ago) link

i think an over-modded board would be really bad and would have a chilling effect

Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link

They don't always know what's happening in every thread immediately either.

Which is why they ask for posts in MRF

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link

Threads get locked under egregious circumstances. I don't think we are anywhere near that rn.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link

[I can easily see a situation where people decide to flag someone just because they personally don't like them.

The idea behind the 51 was precisely so that a small clique couldn't control who was banned, due to personal beefs or bullying. It was meant to require a broad sample of ilx sentiment that a poster had crossed lines into unacceptable territory. It isn't perfect, but it does tend to work as designed.

The suggestion to reduce the number to 31 was valid enough for discussion and become appropriate as numbers of ilxors dwindle. We should probably poll it periodically, maybe annually.

As for the change from "suggest ban" to "flag post", I don't recall the change giving rise to any particular delight, but rather a lot of confusion, followed by a moderate amount of ridicule when it became obvious that nothing had changed but the nomenclature.

i think an over-modded board would be really bad and would have a chilling effect

as opposed to the chilling effect of people who are put off by the lack of moderation

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

like

theres fuck all happens around here that mods need to react to

and a case being made that even with this total lack of controversial or objectionable content, the mods should somehow be more active..

i dunno. seems like we're back to a conversation about what ilx is

which leads to a conversation about what it uses to be

and nowadays thats a load of posters who arent rly very good ilxors (inc yrs truly) taking lazy halfremembered potshots about very good former ilxors because ilx used to be great and mean and now its neither

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

A couple posters were banned because of a Swans beef that devolved into some “interesting” opinions on women, though the more egregious one was also pretty much stalking an ILXor across board over another weird issue.

That was a pretty long time ago, at least a year maybe?

omar little, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

I don't understand why "great" has to be synonymous with "mean." I deal with enough meanness in my day-to-day life and I really don't need any more of it

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:08 (five years ago) link

you have turned "and" into "synonymous" and that is not an innocent manoeuvre imo

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:09 (five years ago) link

it seemed to be implied

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:10 (five years ago) link

if it wasn't implied I apologize but it very much seemed to be and it isn't the first time I've seen a "this board used to be better when people weren't so nice" type sentiment

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:11 (five years ago) link

it wasnt!

now, thats not to say it wasnt more to my personal taste

and tbh i think losing one has affected the other

but no i dont think it was synonymous for the purposes of my point

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:11 (five years ago) link

deems likes the kind of entertainment supplied by meanness, when it is inventive meanness. old-ilx was often mean in inventive and colorful style. it suited his tastes better than present day ilx suits him. but ilx persists and he still arrives every day to punch in.

A is for (Aimless), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link

all I can say to that is this kind of personal taste completely baffles me and I'm completely incapable of understanding the worldview of someone who wants that

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:12 (five years ago) link

anyways

fp

it works for what its meant to do

but i dont know if mods would ever have locked that thread today at amy stage of ilx

and if they had done, it would have caused ructions

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:13 (five years ago) link

funny that we flag drunk posts for moderation

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:14 (five years ago) link

xxp

im not here to defend it tbh

and park in the driveway

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:15 (five years ago) link

there's also a complicated relationship between civility and quality of posts. it's *possible* that if nobody is allowed to call anybody else a numbskull then the numbskull population might run out of control

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:16 (five years ago) link

(given that we all have numbskullery within us)

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:17 (five years ago) link

To prevent numbskullery you just need to educate and lead by example and lead a blameless life like I do

Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:19 (five years ago) link

i think Jesus is a historical example of how that attitude just attracts numbskulls tbh

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:19 (five years ago) link

whereas a lot of Zen masters seem to have inculcated wisdom in their apprentices by judicious application of a big stick

jesus crucified atop golgotha or numbskull mountain

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:23 (five years ago) link

"forgive them Father, for they are numbskulls"

Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link

anyway

mods

51 is too high we used to have 40 good posters now we have 4 the new number should therefore be 5

flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:32 (five years ago) link

Lol

Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:32 (five years ago) link

That would be a bloodbath

Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:33 (five years ago) link

the bark would fly

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:37 (five years ago) link

but not in the organized, purposeful way that your name implies

for i, sock in enumerate (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:38 (five years ago) link

Wonder how many people are on 5 or more at any given time
