Used to be called suggest ban before my day. That seemed a clearer term.
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:15 (five years ago) link
I’m not sure we need that much more moderation though idk. My friend moderates a massive subreddit and she is constantly rooting out hateful, hateful stuff that ilx luckily doesn’t seem to have much of.
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:17 (five years ago) link
well a) we're an increasingly shrinking and insular circle, and b) really hateful stuff will almost always get modded and banned without FP coming into play
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:25 (five years ago) link
it's true
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:26 (five years ago) link
has someone checked on fred? that "check your email" message was p ominous
was that happening a lot when i was gone? ppl get that message from a mod and then vanish without a trace from ilx/irl?
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:27 (five years ago) link
yes

Usually, could be a warning that he's getting close to the limit.
― Scottish Country Twerking (Tom D.), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:32 (five years ago) link
darragh got emailed by the modsock and next thing we knew he’d been replaced with an exact replica
― faculty w1fe (silby), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link
the mod aint been anointed yet that can @ this
― flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:40 (five years ago) link
flag posts can't stick to the wind
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:42 (five years ago) link
in all seriousness "let someone's posts stand unhindered without warning or action until 51 people dislike them" seems like an extremely dysfunctional way to moderate... anything
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:43 (five years ago) link
how long have you been posting to ilx?!
this is not how it works
if a post is actionable you get a mod to action it
if you want the poster banned for an accumulation of offences flag the post
this has been done in about forty threads
― flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:46 (five years ago) link
like
deej hasnt done anything bannable
but very soon hes likely going to be 51'd for i dunno the fourth time
its a good system
― flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:47 (five years ago) link
again, though, this seems very counterintuitive, because the link says Flag Post and the text says "Confirming this will flag the post for the attention of the moderators," so I guess I've been using this wrong for years
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:49 (five years ago) link
if you want a Referendum on Person button then the text should probably be changed to reflect that
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:50 (five years ago) link
yeah they fucked it up when they changed the wording without changing anything else
hilariously, ppl were delighted with the wallpaper change
im as confused as you about it
― flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:51 (five years ago) link
I'm at a loss as to what Fred did to get banned this time around...?
that was weird
― Οὖτις, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:51 (five years ago) link
I p much only fp for egregiously racist/anti-semitic stuff, it's not that often really
pretty sure Fred isn't banned and don't see why he'd be close altho i don't really read US politics threads tbf
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:51 (five years ago) link
i don't think posters like fred or deej should ever be banned
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:52 (five years ago) link
fred hasnt been banned
egregiously racist etc stuff is grounds for banning separately to the "you cant blame mods for this but you know you were shitacting" of fp
you ppl
― flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:53 (five years ago) link
(the system also makes me hesitant because I can easily see a situation where people decide to flag someone just because they personally don't like them. it's less likely with 51 people but that's only because of the scale of this place, 51 people is nothing for, say, twitter)
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:53 (five years ago) link
i take your point Treesh but let's not revive the whole "to SB or not to SB" debate here
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:54 (five years ago) link
Twitter also has this system and it's easily abused by hordes of extremely online nazis~ xp
― faculty w1fe (silby), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:54 (five years ago) link
srsly this has all been done
nobody has ever been 51d just because ppl decided not to like them
again....youve been on ilx for some years............... is this stuff srsly new to you now?
― flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:54 (five years ago) link

nice
ilx is a flat circle
― faculty w1fe (silby), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:55 (five years ago) link
you might've missed some stuff - sometimes ppl need to take a break
― Οὖτις, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:55 (five years ago) link
this is the first time I have heard of this, yes
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link
i think when the system was first implemented katherine 51 was a sufficient number so that it wasn't about people "personally" disliking somebody but that if somebody made enough posts that annoyed enough people the board wasn't made worse by them taking a break for a month or two.
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link
i think banning should be reserved for people like that guy l4rry 4appl3t0n who make people super uncomfortable
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link
the system mostly works but it can be very slow sometimes.
fairly recently we had a couple of longtime regular posters permabanned (and never to return) by the mods before they hit 51, at least one of them had it coming for a very long time.
there was another longtime regular who was banned, then returned after 30 days, and has seemingly left. though it should have been a mod permaban in the first place, it was another one that would have been deserved.
^^^all of these were related to men being habitually unable to not be creepy about women.
oh and adam bruneau self-permabanned recently. not sure what broke him, but he did seem to have some issues with The Last Jedi that may have destroyed him.
― omar little, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:57 (five years ago) link
larry apps was imo harmless compared to others who were given a longer leash but ymmv
"posters lik x or y should never be banned" is a statement so facile as to be utterly useless
poster x should be banned if they behave like asses long enough tlor badly enough to get 51d
― flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link
totally respect other posters differing opinions about this too but it's very hard to point to an example of somebody being 51'd when they hadn't been pretty antagonistic to a broad circle of posters for a reasonable period of time
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link
xp well theres a lot to argue with in all of that omar im not even gonna start tbh
it just seems like there should be some middle ground in moderation between nothing and month-ban
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link
If dom would just be unbanned...
Wait no
― fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:59 (five years ago) link
Noodle Vague is correct imo
― Οὖτις, Friday, 17 August 2018 20:59 (five years ago) link
(that nothing isn't "week ban" or "day ban," it's something like moderators stepping in and temporarily locking a thread)
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 20:59 (five years ago) link
Speaking as someone who got a 6 day tempban for offensive socking i can attest such middle ground exists
xp
but then one idiot in theory could stop a bunch of non-idiots in mid conversation?
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link
Problem is other people start a thread called WHYD U LOCK THE THREAD U IMMORAL NAZI GOEBBELS MODS

mods can do all and everything they could before fp came in about a decade ago, and sometimes they will step in with deletions or a tempban but tbh ive not seen the likes in some time
― flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:01 (five years ago) link
who are we talkin about here omar? xp
was this all in the past six months when i was living in seclusion among the wolves?
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:01 (five years ago) link
this is completely bizarre to me, like going to the doctor and being told "you sprained your wrist but we're not going to do anything about it, come back when you have heart failure or something"
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:02 (five years ago) link
well you seem to be talking about a specific instance where you didn't like a conversation that was happening
tbh mods shouldn't react to that imo
― flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 21:03 (five years ago) link
i think an over-modded board would be really bad and would have a chilling effect
― Trϵϵship, Friday, 17 August 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link
They don't always know what's happening in every thread immediately either.
Which is why they ask for posts in MRF
