googles a suitable reference worth noting that English has around 15 vowel sounds, whereas well-organized languages tend to get by with 5 or 6. The choice of vowel sound to use in many words also tends to vary by region.

where i grew up you were lucky if you heard two different vowel sounds, mostly it was just a growl and then kind of another louder growl

challops trap house (Will M.), Friday, 17 August 2018 18:06 (five years ago) link

I think the Danes had quite a bit of influence on the development of English.

Scottish Country Twerking (Tom D.), Friday, 17 August 2018 18:10 (five years ago) link

these vowels all got imported from somewhere that's for sure

That's Swedish, and after being called out for calling Ireland part of the 'British Isles' I'm really not in a mood to be confused with those ässhöles. Jüst stöp it!

Lol, didn't you know that? Yeah, it's on the 'British literature is shit' thread, which again was prompted by a remark of mine on the 'British cinema is shit' thread, and at that point I'd probably shat enough on, um, 'the wet and foggy isles west of glorious Jutland', was that what we ended up agreeing to?

Yeah, sorry but it's definitely American. And we could make a poll about it, but it would be ruined by the Americans.

Because they ruin everything.

Frederik B, Friday, 17 August 2018 19:30 (five years ago) link

I suppose it's called Jutland because it juts out. Has to be. Frætheræk?
