BTW I had the same problem as Shakey...

I remember visiting Manchester in the early 2000's. The former site of the Hacienda had been turned into condos, which were just on the market. The marketing banner read "The party's over, now you can come home".

Would be nice if we could build condos on empty places like the Balboa Reservoir instead tho.

John Zorn with Laurie Anderson and Terry Riley at the Chapel on Labor Day

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Friday, 17 August 2018 17:18 (five years ago) link

that's kind of nuts

Οὖτις, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:19 (five years ago) link

I didn't believe it when I first saw it, but I am now a ticket-holder.

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Friday, 17 August 2018 17:19 (five years ago) link

anybody want my extra ticket to Pure Bathing Culture tonight? gratis

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:35 (five years ago) link

I’m in SF right now. It smells like human shit everywhere. What a dump. Bought 13 records at Amoeba though. It’s not all terrible.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:38 (five years ago) link

fyi those records are made of shit

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:39 (five years ago) link

Tried to find Orbitals Brown album but I was shit out of luck.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:42 (five years ago) link

i moved to oakland after 11 years

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:43 (five years ago) link

I will never leave

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:44 (five years ago) link

of course you will leave, eventually -- unless they start allowing cemeteries in SF again

sarahell, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:45 (five years ago) link

is it reasonable to assume that this city and the surrounding region will, for the foreseeable future, remain completely unaffordable? SF/bay area along with other parts of california seem like a wonderful place to live - great climate, progressive, tons of cultural stuff to do, lots of big universities, lots of educated people, legal weed - but i worry that i will never make enough money in my life to move there

marcos, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:47 (five years ago) link

sez you! I have given my family strict instructions to have me stuffed and mounted upon my death

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:49 (five years ago) link

it depends on how you define "surrounding region" -- Vallejo is somewhat affordable.

sarahell, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:49 (five years ago) link

eh just wait for the next earthquake, that always lowers property values

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:49 (five years ago) link

so what's with the laundromat that the City is trying to block from being developed? I have a fairly YIMBY tech bro friend from college who rants about this, but I actually haven't heard the progressive side except for in generalizations, like, "no new housing except for affordable housing"

sarahell, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:52 (five years ago) link

i moved to oakland after 11 years

― kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, August 22, 2018 9:43 AM (twelve minutes ago)

what do you think of it?

sarahell, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 16:56 (five years ago) link

I havent heard about this laundromat controversy

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:00 (five years ago) link

well I'm pretty biased in favor of Hillary Ronen (who's kid goes to my kids school in the Mission), MEDA (which was instrumental and helping me buy a home) and Calle 24 (which is just a good local org that I support) so if they're all agin' it well

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:11 (five years ago) link

instrumental in helping

that should say

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:11 (five years ago) link

shadows?

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:28 (five years ago) link

I'm not sympathetic to any developer that insists on "market rate" shit, fuck all those assholes

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:29 (five years ago) link

Yeah 10% affordable is bullshit. I just wish the rationale here wasn't also bullshit.

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:42 (five years ago) link

eh whatever works, this sort of bare-knuckle legal loophole exploitation is the name of the game. Developers do it all the time when it's to their advantage, it's part of their business model.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:44 (five years ago) link

Such fun.

Anyway, will be at that Zorn/Anderson/Riley show too -- was hoping to do a story on that but no time. But my Hemlock memories piece will be running today, and I'll be at the show Sunday where Fuck plays for what'll be the last time.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:47 (five years ago) link

wow now there's a band I hadn't thought of in forever

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:48 (five years ago) link

Kyle from Fuck, turns out, has been a part owner of the Hemlock since opening to the present day, even though he's out in Memphis now. This swing-through with the band had perfect weird timing (first new album in ten years). Also Sheetal from the Stratford 4 is opening on Sunday with her Forest Bees solo thing.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 17:55 (five years ago) link

always hate it when I'm late for work because of a tired metaphor

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 18:31 (five years ago) link

I knew thew S4 had their big reunion show thing last year, didn't know Sheetal had a solo act

I am so out of the loop

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 19:13 (five years ago) link

gotta start going to local shows again now that the kids are older

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 19:13 (five years ago) link

Get the kids to start a band, you'll go by default.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 20:11 (five years ago) link

Speaking of that, if any ILXors in SF have kids who'd like to be in a band, my kid plays guitar and is looking for some folks to play with.

DJI, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 20:43 (five years ago) link

We are in the area for the next 9 days. Staying in Mill Valley

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 21:30 (five years ago) link

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 21:32 (five years ago) link

that's not my post, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 21:49 (five years ago) link

If you're with little kids and you're in Mill Valley, go to the Bay Area Discovery Museum.

fajita seas, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 22:07 (five years ago) link

Yeah thats a good spot for little uns

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 22:08 (five years ago) link

Aquarium! Alcatraz!

Man, the band Fuck ... My old band played with them a few times and stayed with (possibly Kyle?) wherever his studio was in San Fran. Iirc, it was in a shitty neighborhood, at least at the time.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 22:58 (five years ago) link

It was in the Tenderloin so...yes, likely him.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 23:02 (five years ago) link

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 23:05 (five years ago) link
