meanwhile, the other day I'd mentioned trawling a bunch of Egyptian indie on SoundCloud (the trick to soundcloud: go through likes, then followers. following can also work but is largely the really big names). my favorite of the lot:
Cheen - Leff: Egyptian metal singer goes solo and makes "Army of Me"; obviously I love it

The Desperate Journalist one sounds like literally everything I listened to in the 90s and I can't quite believe the vocalist isn't off some other band.I see they're doing a gig with Marion; seems appropriate

a few older tracks
Solar Twins - Alleluias
the fact that I do not have a Katy B and/or Amelia Brightman cover of this is completely unacceptable, and it better keep those alleluia-like high synth runs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HAKygeaZV8
Cath Carroll - Moves Like You
the fact that there is a remix of this perfect/deeply horny/deeply sad song (at least one on youtube) and it is lumbering and clunky, is completely unacceptable. also anachronistic of a fact given when this came out, and I really didn't look for that long -- surely something must exist?

apropos of all the tori amos discussion, I just heard this album by Italian artist Beatrice Antolini while browsing spotify related artists. it came out in february so way too late to pitch anywhere, but the whole thing blew me away, and while it's not derivative at all, a lot of it in particular reminds me of From the Choirgirl Hotel. (the other reference point would be the new Fever Ray if it used more guitars).
this, for instance, is already good before it goes into a giant "Raspberry Swirl" breakdown.
