Despite (or rather, because of) coming from the same clutch of small towns on the Wirral as these guys, at the very same time, I've always passed their music by and only started wondering about them recently. I listened to the new album a couple of times yesterday and I like it. It's pretty, but not too much; really well-crafted, with a hint of oddness or at least something a bit different. There's barely a song over 3 minutes long, but they didn't feel slight at all, I was just left, in a good way, wanting to listen to it all again. I guess this isn't a departure for them and I'm perhaps going to be left wondering why I steadfastly ignored them for the past 20+ years. Anyone else heard this new one? What do you more au fait ILXors think?

It's very low key but I quite like it too. If you're into this one I'd suggest Butterfly House is the best of their recent era of relaxed, gently odd albums. Overall their debut remains my favourite but has a rather different sound

I liked their first two records at the time.
Don’t think you’re the first was a good single

two months pass...

Bill Ryder Jones' new album is fantastic, very different to the others he's done. He seems to getting much more attention this time round.

one year passes...

A track off West Kirby County Primary came up on my Discover Weekly and for whatever reason, this and Yawn are sounding perfect this afternoon, particularly the latter. That drifting, midwest-emo inflected slowcore is very much my bag.

Happy to see a revive... I've been listening to Bill Ryder-Jones a lot recently, especially Yawn. Brilliant album and it's been really hitting the spot for me too this summer/autumn. As in my comment above regarding The Coral, I very much regret that I didn't pay more attention to him from the beginning.

have avoided this lots stuff that's always in the bins, but yesterday after this revival i spotted a mint 2cd edition of 'butterfly house' in a charity shop for 50p, so decided to give it a go.
after 3 listens i have decided that it's really enjoyable byrds-esque guitar pop.
will probably pick up their other charity bin fillers when i get the chance.

Feels like there should be a Bill Ryder-Jones thread. New album is excellent.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Wednesday, 7 February 2024 20:31 (two months ago) link

That would be great. I've really come to love his music. We saw him a couple of weeks ago on the low-key album launch solo acoustic dates, which was great, then are catching the 'proper' tour in March as well.

Whereas, I finally saw The Coral live in December and was pretty non-plussed, and I wasn't really taken by their most recent album.
