jesus christ Corey Knebel just walked the first 3 batters of the 9th inning with a 4-2 lead and somehow wasn't pulled right there

now 8-4 Padres, good going Counsell

Brewers now 0-8 in weekday games

greinke proving to be the most boring human on earth

InfoWarriors (Spottie), Thursday, 9 August 2018 21:24 (five years ago) link

maybe I'm just asking cuz I'm bitter right now but if you have a closer whose command is all over the place why don't you have another person warming up, just in case? I've seen so many blown saves that were absolutely telegraphed from the first batter. roll the dice if you must but leaving a guy in when he's missing the strike zone by a foot feels like you're just giving the game away.

Love these --
Michael Wacha: "WACHAMOLE"
Brad Boxberger: "🎁🍔"

Freddie Freeman: "ANDREW"
No idea what this means but I lol'd.

David Bote just hit the Golden Homer: a walk-off grand slam, down three, and with his team down to his last strike.

For all the years we have pitch data, there are just two other Golden Homers: Chris Hoiles on 5/17/1996 and Alan Trammell on 6/21/1988.

that 6/21/88 win was the middle of three straight walk-off wins against the Yankees

Nats announcers going completely silent for a full minute during Carpenter's HR was pretty satisfying

Another one!

I wouldn't make fun of their 6 seasons old inability to create a consistent bullpen because that dark arts and laugh at it at your own risk it will soon happen to all of our favorite teams.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 04:55 (five years ago) link

Also: the collapse of Severino, my oh my.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 04:57 (five years ago) link

dodgers bullpen melt down spoiling a nice kershaw game. up one with 2 down and 2 strikes bottom of the 9th and the closer beaned the guy... now they are down 3

carpenter is fucking absurd man

Acuna Jr. hit a leadoff home run in both ends of a doubleheader -- he's just the fourth player ever to do it.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 09:04 (five years ago) link

the best winning percentage in the NL belongs to the Chicago Cubs, 68-49 (.581)

teams with higher winning percentages in the AL:

Red Sox, 85-35 (.708)
Yankees, 74-44 (.627)
Astros, 73-46 (.613)
Athletics, 71-48 (.597)
Mariners, 69-51 (.575)
Indians, 67-51 (.568)

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 17:41 (five years ago) link

oh sorry, i guess the mariners and indians are slightly beneath the cubs.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 17:43 (five years ago) link

well those teams play the Orioles and Royals fairly often

zobrist has said it before! http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/20327852/ben-zobrist-chicago-cubs-mlb-needs-electronic-strike-zone

na (NA), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 14:33 (five years ago) link

my understanding is that the 'electronic strike zone' is, at present, not quite as accurate as the average umpire and much more susceptible to crazy errors. and that you shouldn't necessarily trust the various tv depictions of the zone or pitch location graphs

also, yelling at umpires is fun and entertaining and most of them are quite good at what they do -- i think the technology will have to be demonstrably better than the umps, which may not happen, before it is implemented

mookieproof, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link

he was right though

― frogbs, Wednesday, August 15, 2018 9:31 AM (six hours ago)

there is no "zone" as the game is currently constructed, only a set of probabilities based on where the pitch is and the situation. that pitch is called a strike about half the time. hitters know this, pitchers know this, tough luck I guess

k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:24 (five years ago) link

mookie otm

k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:25 (five years ago) link

I dunno that pitch looked pretty outside to me. wasn't even one of those that looked like it was gonna be in the zone and slid out. I agree that's where it gets tricky, with those final bits of movement over the plate and what not. But that pitch...idk it looked like a clear ball

frogbs, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:41 (five years ago) link

quite an OAK-SEA tilt going

Apparently I just missed an interesting first pitch in Marlins-Barves.

a shomin-geki poster with some horror elements (WilliamC), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 23:59 (five years ago) link

First pitch of the bottom half of the inning, that is. (Ureña beaned Acuña to prevent another leadoff homer, Snitker lost his mind, Ureña and Snitker tossed, and now Acuña just came out because the arm doesn't feel right.)

a shomin-geki poster with some horror elements (WilliamC), Thursday, 16 August 2018 00:17 (five years ago) link

i don't blame snitker, that was bullshit

lol at the bullpens having to run in twice

mookieproof, Thursday, 16 August 2018 00:36 (five years ago) link

Just watched the clip--glad the pitcher was ejected.

clemenza, Thursday, 16 August 2018 01:57 (five years ago) link

prediction: some retired red-ass player will bash the braves for not *immediately* charging the field and trying to kill ureña, and will call it a failure of manhood that snitker was more fired up than acuña's own teammates

mookieproof, Thursday, 16 August 2018 02:11 (five years ago) link

lol at the bullpens having to run in twice

Fewer laps tomorrow amirite.
