I'm either getting 0 copies of the vinyl or 20

Finally got through here as well. I felt a little silly; the regular black vinyl pressing is fine, but...not shiney ;_;

stevie otm so I don't know what to think of this. the majority of latter day aphex really bores me but this track and the video work really well

i liked cheetah, it was pretty mellow

brimstead, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 20:24 (five years ago) link

this feels old-fashioned. i know he's not interested in fashion, but still.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 21:14 (five years ago) link

Track is just OK, boilerplate Aphex, I was hoping that by this point he'd be doing something a bit different, after the long break he had I thought maybe he'd return with an LP of piano music like the tracks on Drukqs, but happy enough to have him around putting stuff out even if he isn't quite at his peak anymore. Cheetah was nice enough.

The video is fucking great though, it's not like it has any completely new ideas, but I've not seen gants graf x cyriak before and it just works, really looks like something that should exist in 2018.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 21:30 (five years ago) link

oh really? i thought that looked old-hat as well. fwiw, i don't think RDJ is old-hat!

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

definitely seems to be keeping up with the OPNs and James Ferraros of the world there

tbh I think his new stuff is probably the most technically challenging and complex work he's ever done, it just doesn't really engage me like his previous work does. Syro was definitely one of those albums I thought was pretty rad on release but never really wanted to hear again after the first couple months. Then again drukqs was like that and I love that album now so who knows

frogbs, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 21:38 (five years ago) link

it is definitely super technical but also it sounds like yet another refinement of a sound that started as far back as Druqks. At this point i can play a 'typical Aphex tune' in my head - detuned sinewaves, squelchy acidy noises and drilly rhythms bouncing all over the place, and that's sort of what he does now

Scritti Vanilli - The Word Girl You Know It's True (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 21:54 (five years ago) link

its almost like you could write a program to just spit 'em out

frogbs, Tuesday, 7 August 2018 21:56 (five years ago) link

after the long break he had I thought maybe he'd return with an LP of piano music like the tracks on Drukqs

This was my hope, as well (love those tracks)

I was a massive fan in the day, but haven’t really enjoyed his new stuff

empire bro-lesque (morrisp), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 22:00 (five years ago) link

I wish he would either evolve rhythmically or, yeah, make more Drukqs-esque electro-acoustic music.

Just listened to the new track... it definitely recalls classic Aphex, and has a propulsion that his other recent stuff has lacked (it’s no “Windowlicker,” though?)

My son heard it and made me replay the whole thing again while he watched the video, so maybe that’s something...

empire bro-lesque (morrisp), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 23:32 (five years ago) link

I just want more 4/4 stuff with pretty melodies again.

Once in college, I was sitting around stoned with my jamband/jazz/J. Tull/etc. loving roommate.... I put on I Care..., and he was totally entranced — “I think about music this way, too”

I mean it's not a wild leap or anything but he is doing new stuff here, the second half of the first section (of the video) is more rhythmically interesting than anything on Syro

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 03:14 (five years ago) link

Sounded pretty aphex by numbers to me on the first listen, video was great but I may never watch it again. Notable for the appearance at 1:50 and 4:00 of the Michael Faraday monument at Elephant and Castle, near where he used to live.

Thanks, I had forgotten about that already (thought maybe it was part of the dump)

True there is that crazy triplet-based shit, but it has the same busy, skittery effect.

For someone who is supposedly so experimental with gear I wonder if he is intentionally going back to some of his classic sounds here (those pads). Or...I read this interview with Taylor Deupree recently where he says that his friends make fun of him for buying new synths all the time and then making the same sound with each one, I wonder if that's what RDJ does.

has anyone parsed the Soundcloud dump into eras/albums/curated selections of 'good stuff'? I don't even know where to begin with that. I have tracks come up on shuffle a lot and yeah there are some pretty great tracks in there...

You say stagnation, I say refinement, etc. But yeah.

btw I listened to chink 101 (hmm) on a proper system for the first time last night ... hadn't realized it was a proper bass-heavy SAW 85-92 club ambient banger

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 15:26 (five years ago) link

How does one access the Soundcloud dump?

empire bro-lesque (morrisp), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 15:27 (five years ago) link

xxp yes I tried, got through the first 100+ tracks I think, I could maybe post my lists? I organized it by sound/feel for the most part.

sleeve, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 15:28 (five years ago) link

It's quite possible, maybe even likely, that he's had this track sitting around for 15 years or so tbh.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 15:34 (five years ago) link

would also be interested in recommendations and lists for the soundcloud dump - sleeve or anyone!

Dreadnought of chicanery (Ross), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 15:34 (five years ago) link

gimme 7-8 hours or so, I'll try and work something up. I have them organized into around a half dozen folders.

sleeve, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 15:37 (five years ago) link

appreciated

Dreadnought of chicanery (Ross), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 15:39 (five years ago) link

morrisp I think there may be links upthread/under-the-fold to the Soundcloud files, worth a look anyway.

yea sleeve that would be much appreciated

I remember someone making a "SAW 1.5" which I thought was a good idea

maybe I'm a bit of a codger but I don't really know what to do with 150+ disconnected tracks

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 18:25 (five years ago) link

oh, same. even if i were on a desert island with nothing but a 150+ afx filedump, i'd probably keep thinking "ugh, i'll start sorting out through this sometime next week" until i was rescued or started talking to the volleyball

it's weird how it has those clangy ICBYD/Ventolin type breakbeat drums, though, isn't it? i'd listen to it more but those high frequencies are kind of painful for me
