who the fuck are the Flock

Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 16:28 (five years ago) link

(xxp) I reckon it's been airbrushed.

Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:28 (five years ago) link

Apparently it was a Jerry Goodman (of Mahavishnu Orchestra) outfit. I had never heard of them before although I certainly know who he is. Want to check them out now.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:28 (five years ago) link

lol "Can't have no violins in a ROCK AND ROLL poster!"

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:28 (five years ago) link

I'm sure they're on one of those Rock Machine Turns You On type albums - but one of the tracks no-one played.

Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:30 (five years ago) link

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flock_(band)

So they were actually his pre-Mahavisnhu project.

Drummer Ron Karpman doesn't seem to have done a lot outside of The Flock

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:35 (five years ago) link

this was a really fun diversion from a boring work day

Not are they only are they on one of those Rock Machine Turns You On type albums, Jerry Goodman is on the cover...

... their track is a horrible late 60s version of "Tired of Waiting for You"

Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:43 (five years ago) link

I only know who the Flock was because WXRT in Chicago used to talk about them like they were some incredible great lost '60s band a la Moby Grape. Didn't actually hear any of their music until today, and it sounds exactly like you'd imagine the Mahavishnu violinist fronting Blood, Sweat & Tears to sound like.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:48 (five years ago) link

I don't know what UK copyright/persona law was like in 1970, but it also kind of makes sense that they'd use an anonymous photo of a lesser-known band if there was otherwise a risk of paying for use of someone's likeness in an ad.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:52 (five years ago) link

welp this band is awful

Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 16:52 (five years ago) link

lol, can't listen right now but looking forward to the disappointment later

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:53 (five years ago) link

^^^ lol, exactly how I remember them. I don't remember how I ended up owning their Dinosaur Swamps album as a kid, but I sold it haven't thought about it since. Cool cover though.

Wikipedia sez their saxophonist, one Tom Webb, "participated in" the recording of Bitches Brew, "but [his] performance was not recorded."

So...either he was at the session but his mic/channel was mysteriously turned off, or Tom Webb is a damn liar.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:57 (five years ago) link

he brought sandwiches

Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 16:59 (five years ago) link

"Here you are, Mr. Davis. Now, I should tell you that I specifically asked the man at the deli for a 'roast beef motherfucker' per your instructions, but all they had was a regular roast beef sandwich."

Nice detective work! It’s a cool picture anyone got a clean (no text) version of it?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 3 August 2018 17:09 (five years ago) link

so it took me a sec, but it looks like those pics may have been taken at nearly the same moment, with the latter (non-RS one) reversed (unless the drummer is left-handed).

lol, I could totally see Miles being like "Teo, turn this motherfucker's mic off"

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 17:31 (five years ago) link

^^^ my thoughts exactly

sleeve, Friday, 3 August 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link

He had the good dope so Miles said he could "play on the session," something like that

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 17:59 (five years ago) link

now I kind of want to start a "photos taking from different angles at approximately the same moment" thread, but too much to do. Would presumably be mostly sports photos anyway.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 19:11 (five years ago) link

welp this band is awful

Enjoyed the start of the track, but it becomes like a shred video, without the audio lining up.

saddest kamancheh (bendy), Saturday, 4 August 2018 22:29 (five years ago) link

Excellent deduction work in this thread, team.

StanM, Sunday, 5 August 2018 14:18 (five years ago) link

Yeah, this thread rules. Now I want to actually listen to the Flock.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Sunday, 5 August 2018 14:25 (five years ago) link
