(I never thought of most of these as having much to do with Hindi tbh as opposed to just being Indian English, in some cases preserved Victorian English. My Tamil and Malayali family use nearly all if them too.)

"Do the needful" doesn't belong here.

Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 27 July 2018 12:01 (five years ago) link

In fact, "Do the needful" and "First class" are pure Alan Partridge - whatever it is Alan Partridge does, slighly dated banter?

Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 27 July 2018 12:05 (five years ago) link

Thought about just calling the thread Indian English S/D or putting it in the title but figured Hinglish would be easier to search. Maybe we should ask mod to add.

They DO belong in an Indian English thread and that is my point!xp

i.e. they are not dated in India.

Believe me, I've heard enough Indian (and Pakistani) commentators and summarizers on Test Match Special over the years to know dated English banter is still very much spoken the sub-continent!

Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 27 July 2018 13:18 (five years ago) link

... and Sri Lankan, of course.... and Bangladeshi!

two favs:

1. 'pickpocketers'

2. the love of acronyms/abbreviations taken to the extreme e.g. P.O.P. for plaster of paris

Is “guess papers” Indian or is that more from Pakistan or somewhere else?

Just came across this in a completely different context. The IA element is kind of light but I want to read more from this guy: https://www.thehindu.com/books/know-your-english/know-your-english-meaning-of-pancake-people/article2750006.ece
