Tiger got tight at the end. Amazing to get to anywhere near anything, given all that's gone on over the years.

sky? no thanks pass. open is dead

Will be one of a million people chimerically tuning in tomorrow hoping Tiger can pull off a miracle.
― clemenza, Saturday, 21 July 2018 23:14 (five years ago) link
It's already at miracle stage.

Leader in the clubhouse, Eddie Pepperell... who? Woods up two, Kisner down three. Long long way to go.
― Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Sunday, 22 July 2018 15:13 (five years ago) link
Fuck this being on Sky, of course. First they fuck test cricket, now the Open is ruined.
― Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Sunday, 22 July 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link
two straight boss-level bunker shots from tiger
― k3vin k., Sunday, 22 July 2018 15:37 (five years ago) link
I think you could say this is getting interesting.
― Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Sunday, 22 July 2018 15:41 (five years ago) link
I would’ve sworn on my life he’d never get this close again
― frogbs, Sunday, 22 July 2018 16:05 (five years ago) link
good tee shot on 13 from tiger...needs to make par here and make some moves over the next few
― k3vin k., Sunday, 22 July 2018 16:23 (five years ago) link
wow, has to do better with his third shot on 14
― k3vin k., Sunday, 22 July 2018 16:37 (five years ago) link
Molinari, -8, in the clubhouse.
― Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Sunday, 22 July 2018 17:32 (five years ago) link
impressive to do that paired with tiger too
― k3vin k., Sunday, 22 July 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link
Would have been a great bet to win.
― Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Sunday, 22 July 2018 17:33 (five years ago) link
That damn Molinari Family on the Coast.
― clemenza, Sunday, 22 July 2018 17:40 (five years ago) link
that was incredible TV -- "is he gonna hit it?"
― k3vin k., Sunday, 22 July 2018 17:42 (five years ago) link
congratulations to sky for ruining the open, which no longer exists
― ||||||||, Sunday, 22 July 2018 18:06 (five years ago) link
If Tiger ever does win another major, I don't think it's going to be scrambling from behind, even sitting in second.
― clemenza, Sunday, 12 August 2018 19:42 (five years ago) link
I can't believe that one putt of Tiger's stayed out of the hole...in there, but still a longshot.
― clemenza, Sunday, 12 August 2018 21:24 (five years ago) link
Every time you get really excited about Tiger, he misses another fairway--he's hit one today, I think.
― clemenza, Sunday, 12 August 2018 21:32 (five years ago) link
man what a tourney. tiger had 3 putts today that were a centimeter away from dropping. i like koepka tho.
― InfoWarriors (Spottie), Monday, 13 August 2018 04:05 (five years ago) link
Amazing to think Tiger might win another major - will be one of the great achievements if he manages it.
Watching him at the majors next year will be the most compelling bit of sport. Can't wait.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 13 August 2018 06:56 (five years ago) link
when I started my 'how many majors will Spieth win' thread I didn't foresee Koepka, the man is made of granite
― imago, Monday, 13 August 2018 07:48 (five years ago) link
and yeah, revenant Tiger is pretty compelling
― imago, Monday, 13 August 2018 07:49 (five years ago) link
Heard on the radio this morning that CBS had a 69% bump in Sunday's audience from last year.
Yesterday was really promising...yet at the same time, I'm even less optimistic than before. Those close putts aside, he shouldn't have scored so well; he made a bunch of putts, and rebounded from errant drives all day. Even more than that, though, there's just too many great players out there now. There's gotta be 10-15 guys are a threat every major to lap the field if they get hot. Looks like he might mix it up for another two or three years, but actually winning, that'd have to be the most perfect of perfect storms.
― clemenza, Monday, 13 August 2018 19:15 (five years ago) link
yah but at least there's some hope and anticipation grounded on some actual nice results.]
he's always sprayed it off the tee
― InfoWarriors (Spottie), Monday, 13 August 2018 19:24 (five years ago) link
nice
― k3vin k., Monday, 13 August 2018 19:58 (five years ago) link
I mean it's kind of easy to see it from the other angle too, if he'd hit fairways in line with his career avg. he might have won it
that said I think clem is otm. I don't think Tiger is a favorite to win another one in his life but it'll be very cool if he does. I really did not think he'd come this close ever again.
― frogbs, Monday, 13 August 2018 20:22 (five years ago) link
ay tom watson almost pulled one off at 60 y/o
― InfoWarriors (Spottie), Monday, 13 August 2018 20:32 (five years ago) link
is he really a dog to win a major ever again? surely there are odds on this at the sportsbooks
― k3vin k., Monday, 13 August 2018 20:47 (five years ago) link
I don't think they would book a bet that can't pay out until he dies
― frogbs, Monday, 13 August 2018 20:56 (five years ago) link
True, up to a point. He did wail a few during his heyday (being Superman then, it always felt like the recovery shot would be spectacular anyway, even though it wasn't). Found some stats for those years:
http://3jack.blogspot.com/2009/04/statistical-analysis-of-tigers-driving.html
His fairway accuracy was, I don't know, middle of the pack?
1997……………………68.6%1998……………………67.9%1999……………………71.3%2000……………………71.2%2001……………………65.5%2002……………………67.5%2003……………………62.7%2004……………………56.1%2005……………………54.6%2006……………………60.7%2007……………………59.8%2008……………………57.9%
He settled in around 55-60%. I don't know how many fairways he hit yesterday, but he was 0-5 on the front nine--maybe he ended up hitting two or three for the round? That's a big difference. Unless you're zeroed in on the greens like he was yesterday--phenomenal--I don't know how you can win hitting the ball of the tee like that.
― clemenza, Monday, 13 August 2018 20:58 (five years ago) link
yeah think he was beating around the 100th rank in his prime
― InfoWarriors (Spottie), Monday, 13 August 2018 21:39 (five years ago) link
i'd be shocked if he's ever favored at the start of another major, but i think his game still sets up well for both the u.s. and british open. augusta is probably too long but he obviously knows that course as well as anyone so it could certainly be in play too.
i rarely pay that much attention to where the pga championship is being played, but the fact he was able to hang in with all the younger players, knowing he had to try and bomb it off the tee on Sunday to keep pace bodes well imo.
if he had putted this well, at carnoustie, i think he would have won after everyone fell back to earth on Sunday. I expect that type of scenario to play out at a few more times before he's completely washed up. his performance the last two majors of the year give me confidence he can win one again, despite not being head a shoulders above the rest of the field. that's not something i believed in April.
― dynamicinterface, Monday, 13 August 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link
Sergio getting picked for the Ryder Cup when he's played shit since April is p bullshit. Hopefully the rough is up and the greens are really slow otherwise Europe could get wiped. Also picking 3 players as wildcards who are below average putters is p stupid.Still the US hasn't won abroad for about 25 years or something silly so I've that to cling to.

This story is quite something, as are the man's pictures.
What a wild story: a prisoner serving 39 years to life started making drawings of golf courses. The drawings made their way to Golf Digest, which wrote about him, then realized his conviction was sketchy, then investigated, and now he's free https://t.co/mXKZ8kRZgT— Tom Gara (@tomgara) September 19, 2018

Yeah great story.
Revive as I am enjoying the Team USA's annihilation in the Ryder Cup.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 29 September 2018 19:46 (five years ago) link
been thinking of reviving this, partly to complain about crowds, partly to enjoy Team USA's annihilation. it's reached the point where it seems like they're just not that into it.
― Leon Carrotsky (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 29 September 2018 19:48 (five years ago) link
Oh right have the crowds been bad? As I can only see highlights I don't know whether the crowd are making so much noise because of their delight that its been so easy or what.
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 29 September 2018 19:54 (five years ago) link
i've mostly had it on the radio but jeering and cheering a missed putt is a bad look imo and i've heard a lot of it, i feel like a chunk of the audience for the Ryder Cup are probably v into bacon
― Leon Carrotsky (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 29 September 2018 19:55 (five years ago) link
Yeah no need for that as the Americans are doing enough damage by themselves.

hit one fairway wee fucks
Heard a pundit this evening explaining that this course is all about club selection and hitting the right fairway areas, too many of the US team trying to muscle thru I think
