Disappointed this poll doesn't include an option for the phrase that he repeats in the verse, which I believe to be ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon.

I named my high school band Desert Ice and as bad as I feel about that I'm glad I somehow did not think of Rusted Root.

They're still touring, and judging by recent YouTube videos, they sound just as good now as they did then.

They burst on the scene in Pennsylvania when I was in college - 1994/5, Saw them 5 or 6 times in 1994. Each show was magical...they had it back then.

I have "When I Woke" and "Welcome To My Party". I love the WIW opening track "Drum Trip". It's so anti-commercial! Vocals are a bit David Byrne-ish.

I happen to be listening to that track right now (when you search Rusted Root on Spotify, playlists that come up include "Have a Great Day!", "Totally Stress Free", and "A Perfect Day" -- sounds like my vibe)

Ultimately they may have damaged or certainly limited their careers by allowing themselves to be exclusively lumped into the Deadhead / jam band circuit.

Only one of the members in the photo posted above is still in the band. How DARE the current incarnation call themselves "Rusted Root."

Rusted Root has one original member, the others are all collected bits of twigs and rope shaped into person-shaped figures.

I have a halo of drums tattooed around my heart so that the beat of life will always sustain me. Well, around my right nipple, actually. I was too baked to remember which side was my heart side but I'd like to think my heart forgives me.

I have 'RUSTED ROOT' tattooed on my thing.

I'd never seen this video before and it's way less dated than I would have expected, like hippie shit is removed from all usual pop culture time signifiers.

A friend of mine ended up hanging out with these guys in a desert somewhere in like 1993 and I assume did a lot of shrooms. And this record was a staple at my wife's college house in Ann Arbor circa 1995 thanks to our shameful sort-of jam band past, but mostly from her hippie roommates who sometimes had random people and tanks of nitrous in the basement. I won't lie, I didn't hate it, though drugs were usually involved. I also had sex at least once while this record was playing.

Anybody here have some salient facts about əkoostik hookah?

This band, who I've never actually heard, was the breaking point for my wife's jam band era. I think she might have ended seeing them with the hippie roommates and fucking hated it so much that it made her suddenly and jarringly realize how dumb so much of that shit was and how obnoxious and idiotic and mindless and snobby all the hippies who frequented her house were.

She used to sing the line "take the train to HOOKAVILLE" to me as shorthand for "my hippie roomates did something stupid or irresponsible again" or to make me mad but it would fill her with shame to do so and she'd get angry at herself about it.

PS. I still love the Dead and refuse to strongly denounce Phish.

Thread took a rather dark turn. I'm so sorry. The therapy bills alone must be astronomical, but really you never fully recover.

Even now you still hear that loathsome voice whisper in your ear.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Friday, 20 July 2018 11:49 (five years ago) link

I'd like to think they're huge primadonnas about the exact spelling of their band's name in marquees and college newspaper ads and what have you. 'Excuse me, does that look like a schwa to you? Do you know who we are? We're əkoostik fucking hookah, you piece of trash. Don't make me crush you like a bug. (bows) Namaste.'

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Friday, 20 July 2018 12:06 (five years ago) link

Ohhhh, yeah, the other band that used to come through town all the time was Umphrey's McGee. Like, I understand that you're probably high when you name your jam band. That's just as god intended. But there isn't some point along the line where you manage to avoid being high for 5-10 minutes and realize what a horrifying assemblage of phonemes you've saddled your band with? Just typing the words 'Umphrey's McGee' kinda makes me want to punch something.

I am finally this moment listening to Rusted Root's hit single 'Send Me On My Way' for the first time since starting this thread (for the first time in years, probably) after realizing that it is, for some reason, on my iPod. I have no recollection of putting it there, but I guess I have to accede that the Root moves in mysterious ways and I cannot predict how or when they will manifest in my world.

I can tell that this singer has never used the top button of a shirt in his life. I might even go as far as the top two or three buttons. You gotta let the good people see the pukka beads, man.

I want to change into a knit hemp poncho so badly right now, I can't even tell you. I'm going to have to content myself for now with the tie-dyed tapestry I just draped over my work station.

Also, pro musicians are generally happy to
stick with a band that can reliably book gigs, no? Why is Rusted Root membership such a revolving door? Maybe the guy’s a germophobe, and doesn’t pass his pipe around.

He probably sits around harshing his bandmates' mellow by bragging about his stock portfolio all day or something.

If you've seen a commercial for like a travel agency or maybe a cruiseline and the song you heard wasn't the B-52's song 'Roam' you've probably heard this song without realizing it. It's the 'Solsbury Hill' of Generation X.
