Whenever I hear the song 'Love Shack' in public, say at a Walgreens or the Starbucks, I like to say 'tiiiiiin Root...Rusted' real loud over the music because I love the band Rusted Root. People really dig it, I think.

It promotes awareness of Rusted Root.

I recall "Rusted Foot" being slug around by musicians envious of their fame.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Thursday, 19 July 2018 16:17 (five years ago) link

Good one.

I mean 'Busted Root' is the one I just came up with in .00000000005 seconds that's a much better one, but still...good one, bands.

my mom had this CD back in the 90s for some reason. the other music she liked then was linda ronstadt

this video is completely hilarious btw

"crusted boot" was mine.

how's life, Thursday, 19 July 2018 16:32 (five years ago) link

Crusted Boot would have been a good name for a band from the other contingent in that co-op.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Thursday, 19 July 2018 16:45 (five years ago) link

What I do enjoy about the quote; he marvels at the neologisms as though they sprung from the deep unconscious, when you know they just sounded like words he heard in South African music. Indestructible Beat of the East End of Pittsburgh.

in a moment of weakness, i listened to 1 minute and 35 seconds of this

as a result of this unfortunate lapse in judgement, i have now hired a deep web hitman to assassinate old lunch

I'm pretty sure many of these vowels can't be properly transcribed in the absence of the "e with three dots" character, so I propose we suspend this poll until the Unicode Consortium stops ignoring the rightful demands of a certain lobby.

mick signals, Thursday, 19 July 2018 17:05 (five years ago) link

Mods, my life has been threatened by bizarro for no greater crime than exposing his ears to the transformative sounds of love and of brotherhood. I demand that you impose the strictest possible sanctions upon him, with extreme prejudice if necessary. Namaste.

I never would have imagined, of all the threads about terrible music which I start/revive, that a Root poll would've been the one to take off, but I must say I'm pleased.

brimstead, Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:27 (five years ago) link

If Phish were paragons of their craft, they would be Rusted Root, yes.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:29 (five years ago) link

Can't wait to see the Root at the state fair this summer. They're co-headlining with Sponge, Tracy Bonham, and Morcheeba. It's gonna be a slice.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:30 (five years ago) link

Disappointed this poll doesn't include an option for the phrase that he repeats in the verse, which I believe to be ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon.

^^massive oversight imo

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:33 (five years ago) link

You are correct, of course, as that is the most epic of their neologisms. A contribution to our language which will significantly impact generations to come.

'What are you doing, my son?'
'Well, father, simply put: ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon.'
'Ah, I see. Please, carry on, my special boy. Namaste.'
'And a Namaste to you, o father.'

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:36 (five years ago) link

Trick question, because "oombayseeyou" is short for "ehbubadeesaybubadeeyon."

Fake news!

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

Luv this thread! Rusted Root has an extremely abbreviated Wikipedia page for a band that's been around 25+ years, and has released four major-label albums, four independent albums (one of them double-live), a "20th Century Masters" best-of, and five EPs...

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:45 (five years ago) link

not abbreviated enough imo

BIG RICHARD ENERGY (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:47 (five years ago) link

Hearing this song makes me feel ashamed that we beat up on "What I Am" for so many years.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:47 (five years ago) link

The video, and every move the guy busts in it, are wonderful and hilarious.

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:49 (five years ago) link

In the interest of full disclosure, I was prompted to start this thread this morning when I heard a Spin Doctors song and my immediate thought was that the Spin Doctors were probably the favorite band of at least one member of Rusted Root.

I wonder why the shot the video on such an overcast day. Wouldn't it have more impact if they were prancing on a plateau beneath a sunny, blue sky?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:57 (five years ago) link

Spin Doctors and Rusted Root were contemporaries -- mid/late-'93 "alternative" radio was all "Two Princes," "On My Way," and the 4 Non Blondes song.

I often find myself locked in a moment of zen-like contemplation when I realize that most bands are somebody's favorite band. Like Crazytown. Someone out there somewhere still proudly declares that Crazytown is their favorite band of all time. It's a very complex world, the one we live in.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 19 July 2018 19:01 (five years ago) link

I don't think the contemporariness of the Root and the Doctors precludes the fact that the Rusted Root fife player was a charter member of the Spin Doctors fan club.

Phish neologisms include: trune, taboot, blastoplast, jibboo... that's just off the top of my head. there are probably more that I'm forgetting.

Anybody here have some salient facts about əkoostik hookah? All I know is that we used to get a kick out of very enthusiastically bellowing their profoundly stupid name in the midst of an ultimate sesh in the quad every time they rolled through my college town.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link

Man, I miss ultimate in the quad. And devil sticks in front of the Rathskeller just before going to see the local Sublime cover band.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 19:19 (five years ago) link

I have to literally walk away from my desk rn because the phrase 'ultimate in the quad' is making me lose the last of my composure.

Pizza's the food that's sure to please! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 19 July 2018 19:22 (five years ago) link

I guess I was vaguely aware that this band existed. I must have seen posters or CDs or t-shirts or something. But I am very happy that I had not knowingly heard even a single djembe-slap-worth of their alleged "music" until now.

There were probably people on the periphery of my social circle who were into this sort of thing (baja shirt, hacky sack, Birkenstocks/huaraches, pennywhistle). But my truest droogs and I were mainly getting high and listening to Residents, Beethoven, Modern Jazz Quartet, and old-tymey 78s during those years. We were aware there was such a thing as radio, but as far as we were concerned it may as well have been broadcasting solely to the moon.
