I mean is there a good reason for Jonathan Schoop, a consistently solid contributor coming off his best year and entering what should be his prime, to have suddenly turned into a replacement-level chump?

yea this has been foreseeable for a while imo & their bullpen mostly kept them viable

johnny crunch, Thursday, 19 July 2018 01:37 (five years ago) link

Disagree. Team's record is well below its Pythag and its Pythag is well below where you'd expect the team to be based on talent on the field. Fangraphs had the Orioles projected for 76 wins this year, I think that's about what one might have foreseen based on who was on the field.

i'm willing to grant them their pythag, which is . . . 32-65 and solidifies their lead over the royals as the majors' 29th-best team

everything seems to have broken badly -- one might expect schoop to be league-average; you can't exactly predict chris davis being literally the worst player of all time -- but they started the season with basically two starting pitchers, and that has been a relative strength

anyway, the deal seems decent? diaz is legit, one or two of the others might amount to something. pretty good for 12 weeks of machado

If Jones is traded, that'll be the end of the Erik Bedard Trade Era in Baltimore. Maybe it'll be the beginning of the Manny Machado Trade Era!

return for britton seems reasonable

O's farm system was thought of as firmly in the bottom third of the league at the beginning of 2018, I wonder where people see it now

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 26 July 2018 04:37 (five years ago) link

Bottom half of the league.

That plus the high draft picks we'll get for sucking so bad this year and next should put us in an OK place

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 26 July 2018 20:25 (five years ago) link

that's the spirit

mookieproof, Thursday, 26 July 2018 20:33 (five years ago) link

Look, this team put together the best years of Manny Machado, Chris Tillman, Matt Wieters, Wei-Yin Chen, many others, into a team that for 5 years contended regularly and was one of the very best in baseball, I've got nothing to complain about

don't worry, there's help on the farm

The ORIOLES have signed 1B RYAN RIPKEN to a Minor League contract for 2019. Ripken, who turned 25 in July, hit .244/.281/.327 with a career-high seven homers in 106 games for Class A Delmarva this season.
