Obviously the main reason for this is that men are 'allowed' to be bad singers, the industry doesn't care, whereas women by and large aren't.

To be clear, I’m not speaking of singing “ability” or style/technique — I’m talking specifically about sound of the dudes’ voices (which seemed to be what Turrican was complaining about).

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Saturday, 14 July 2018 15:34 (five years ago) link

To be accurate, he was complaining about her accent, which is a constituent of the sound of her voice, I suppose.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Saturday, 14 July 2018 17:15 (five years ago) link

I'm not sure if that means if she sang like Aretha Franklin, or some other world renowned singer, but with the same accent he would find it annoying or not. It might sound weird however.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Saturday, 14 July 2018 17:17 (five years ago) link

granted, I'm american, but it just sounds like a british accent to me

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Saturday, 14 July 2018 21:57 (five years ago) link

Well, yes, I don't really know what he's on about, but he declined the invitation to expand on his initial comment.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Saturday, 14 July 2018 22:06 (five years ago) link

I imagine it's a class thing that can only be perceived if you are British.

Tom, I have already provided you with your answer - if you scroll up, you'll find it. I must say, your inability to grasp things that aren't difficult to comprehend is certainly something.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 14 July 2018 23:08 (five years ago) link

Me: "That spade is a spade."
Tom D.: "Elaborate."
Me: "Well, it's a spade. It really is as simple as that."
Tom D.: "*shrugs* Well, I asked him to expand on it, but he declined. I really don't know what he's on about."
Entire world: "???"

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 14 July 2018 23:18 (five years ago) link

LOL, entire world. Elaborating on spades, not to be dismissed so lightly!

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Saturday, 14 July 2018 23:39 (five years ago) link

Anyway, I should stop goading you as your inability to handle being challenged on even the slightest, most trivial, of points and habit of instantly doubling down and going on the attack in response is so Pavlovian, I don't think you can help yourself.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Saturday, 14 July 2018 23:41 (five years ago) link

Me: "That spade is a spade."
Tom D.: "Elaborate."
Me: "Well, it's a spade. It really is as simple as that."
Tom D.: "Wow, your inability to handle being challenged on even the slightest, most trivial, of points and habit of doubling down and going on the attack in response is so Pavlovian, I don't think you can help yourself."
Entire world: "???"

Yes, I agree that your obsession with me is starting to get tiresome - at least you're admitting to it, so there is that at least.

Just checked out their KEXP perf on YT... I didn’t realize how young they are, they’re really kids.

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Sunday, 15 July 2018 00:19 (five years ago) link

Yes!

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Sunday, 15 July 2018 00:20 (five years ago) link

Well, that perf was two and a half years ago. They're 19 now, I think.

Florence was the one that surprised me because I've always found her very bland. I'll have to check out Tune Yards because I love annoying singers and I hope Let's Eat Grandma stay annoying voiced forever.

Just discovered these guys through someone else's middle-of-the-year list on which I liked nothing else. Have listened to most of the album and love it, although yet to get to Donnie Darko.

They're playing in DC on Thursday but I doubt I'll get to go becase of school night/hurricane double whammy. Anyone see them live?

how's life, Monday, 10 September 2018 10:33 (five years ago) link

Yes, saw them last week — very much enjoyed the show, they had a straightforward enough performance style but they delivered.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 10 September 2018 12:17 (five years ago) link

One of my ten albums of the year so far, this. I've played the shit out of it and am yet to exhaust it!

The two epics are magnificent, but 'Falling Into Me' has got to be one of my tracks of the year - it's just perfect.

Okay lol @ Turrican’s freak out upthread, especially the “let me deflect these implications of sexism by repeatedly using a phrase containing a word that has become a racist slur”

DJP, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 13:30 (three years ago) link

LOL what a tool, I still have no idea what his problem was with the accent of one of the singers.

def feels like the only marketable choice rn is between 80s synthpop and pop-country, and LEG have chosen the one they're worse at

imago, Thursday, 11 November 2021 12:10 (two years ago) link

Yeah. The video is also so Folklore-y that it ought to be a parody. Still, will give benefit of the doubt til I hear the album.

ufo, Tuesday, 4 January 2022 12:38 (two years ago) link

Yeah, it's fine but not interesting.

the main synth riff is v generic in quite an off-putting way, but even so i do like this song, definitely felt some odd jumble of emotions watching that

wow this is a bummer was excited to see the thread bumped, they really chucked it all to go for "random indie band opening for angel olson"

Bit disappointed by the new album. It's nice enough and the vocals are fantastic but they took away a lot of the things that made the second album so compelling. Some of it sounds pretty generic compared to what they were doing before.

Sad to hear this take.

Bee OK, Friday, 29 April 2022 01:53 (one year ago) link

yeah i agree, it's mostly solid (though the last two tracks are a fair bit weaker) but it lacks anything that really made them distinct before. i quite like "levitation" at least

ufo, Friday, 29 April 2022 05:17 (one year ago) link

Those last two songs are a real mood killer and feel like they should be bonus tracks. Kind of reminds me of Future Nostalgia in that way.

kitchen person, Friday, 29 April 2022 14:29 (one year ago) link

We are so gutted to have to pull tonight's show at Stag and Dagger in Edinburgh, there were tech issues beyond our control 😔 All tickets for tonight should be eligible for entry tomorrow in Glasgow - really hope to see you there 💝

hmm, I think this album's pretty great, esp. "Happy New Year" and "Two Ribbons." latter is one of those songs where I keep hearing the tension of it not going bigger in the way it seems ready to, so that every detail (slight distortion, a second voice tripping over the first, "watch them wash away") reads as a massive ripple in the fabric. reminds me of some other closing track(s) I can't quite place, has "So Tonight That I Might See" or "Looking Glass" energy maybe.
