(xp) Paul Rust (a young guy) jamming on McCartney's "Jet" with the guy from Eels, in a house party scene from the Apatow-produced series Love, is very dad-rock.

(Just realized Paul Rudd & Paul Rust are only two letters apart, and it's making me question both names)

"Start Me Up" was made by actual 40ish dads and a big hit showing dads still got it. Does that make it daddest, or is recalling the songs of wild youth more dad?

This was my approximate reasoning in voting for it. The guitar riff and lyric both sound like an actual middle-aged dad trying to get going in the morning, or in the bedroom, whichever.

Eh, the line "you make a dead man come" is not very dad rock. (But maybe "You make a dad man ... ").

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 19:44 (five years ago) link

I preferred dadrock when it was a way to take the piss out of bad music rather then a way to take the piss out of middle aged men enjoying stuff.

Honestly I think of today's dad rock as being more like Wilco.

Yes. When I started hearing the term dad rock Wilco was the headlining act. Dad rock was known to be that mellow adult alternative/indie sound that would often appeal to smart (dressed nicely) types because of difficult guitar playing.

I'd love to see a US version of this comp (wilco, jack white related stuff, walkmen, vampire weekend).

This format, basically?: https://www.billboard.com/charts/triple-a

Ghost is at #1 on the mainstream rock chart = that is clearly the superior format

I don't know a lot of those AAA songs/artists, but most the ones I do know don't seem to quite fit. Not "rock" enough, maybe?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 22:13 (five years ago) link

I think at least one band member needs to wear a hat and/or beard (if not both).

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 22:15 (five years ago) link

(haha, there's the "Record Company" that Josh mentioned, though -- I thought he made up that name. They have beards...)

I feel like Wilco have an "experimental" signifier those guys lack, which makes the difference somehow. It's that "difficult guitar playing" factor mentioned above.

You mean you can't just compile rock hits from a 5-decade span?

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 22:54 (five years ago) link

It was tough but I voted for Natalie Imbruglia in the end.

"Difficult guitar playing" probably describes half of what I listen to btw. Maybe it's time to adopt.

Wilco is not quite of “today”, most people knew about them through yankee hotel foxtrot and that record is like 20 years old.

Great thread. Basically, dads suck and guitars are tools of the patriarchy.

Most artists we're talking about here aren't exactly burning up the charts, though (even if still releasing new material).

Full disclosure: I never cared for Wilco, at all -- I thought they were dull, sub-Petty MOR rock w/pretensions -- until their last two albums, which I think are terrific... and which HAPPEN to have been released in the time since I became a dad. So that seals it! They're dad rock, and I like 'em (...but still not their earlier stuff).

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 23:39 (five years ago) link

Ha, I'll stan for Nels Cline all day long but I honestly had no idea that Wilco has released four albums since Sky Blue Sky.

for a very long time, I have mulled over posting a TS: WFUV vs WFMU here, yet of course it would be no goddamn contest whatsoever on ILM. Notwithstanding sirius or Hot 97, that's what i listen to in the car. FUV is an excellent indicator of dad/ mom rock. It really is NO RAP OR HARD STUFF. once you come to terms with that, you hear Brandi Carlslie, The Record Company (truly hideously boring), and a constellation of very very correct triple A/neo classic rock that is deeply unfashionable, as well as the front rank of indie rock like Spoon, Arcade Fire and LCD and the most boring version of of the classic rock canon you can imagine …really anything that nice conscientious white people are supposed to like…BUT, aren't nice conscientious white folk supposed to listen to Kendrick and SZA? Maybe, but that's rap and R&B and that would freak out the listeners, who think that's all commercial crap…FUV plays the SHIT out of the Dap-Tone universe…black music is apparently okay when it is no longer innovating…I truly would be interested if any other ILMer in the NY area has anything to say about WFUV, which is absolutely indistinguishable from Sirius's Spectrum…
