I’m a dad and I love “Start Me Up.”

If my dad liked rock he'd probably be into Blue Oyster Cult so I'm voting for Reaper. + They feel like the daddiest band on this list.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 22:22 (five years ago) link

Honestly I think of today's dad rock as being more like Wilco.

― i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:20 (one hour ago)

Yes. When I started hearing the term dad rock Wilco was the headlining act. Dad rock was known to be that mellow adult alternative/indie sound that would often appeal to smart (dressed nicely) types because of difficult guitar playing.

He said captain, I said wot (FlopsyDuck), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:05 (five years ago) link

Dad Rock for me was Chubby Checker.

clemenza, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:12 (five years ago) link

i don't like the term "dad rock" on account of how gendered it is
lots of moms & grandmas & women who have not reproduced like these songs too
it's just a way of making fun of old people :(

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:14 (five years ago) link

if we can't make fun of people who aren't us for enjoying things we also like, are we even talking about music

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:15 (five years ago) link

i don't find it necessary but whatever floats yr boat i guess

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:19 (five years ago) link

I thought it was sort of understood to be a silly term and ppl here are just having fun w/it...

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:21 (five years ago) link

my concept of Dad Rock based on my own dead Dad is Irish Showbands, The Wolfe Tones, Max Boyce tapes - all wrong probably!

Yeah, my own Dad wouldn't last five seconds into any of these songs. I mostly try to form conclusions from my observations of white Dads.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:23 (five years ago) link

White Dads has prob'ly been used a few times as a band name

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:25 (five years ago) link

It's also in the title of the compilation album this poll is based on, so kind of hard to avoid using it?

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:26 (five years ago) link

i'm not accusing anyone of wrongdoing i just think it's a shitty term
i don't care if you want to discuss this continuously for a year or even longer

the dads i know were mostly young punks so i guess i'd vote for the clash song (bonus if it segued directly into the BAD song)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:28 (five years ago) link

Btw, I wasn't suggesting that it's impossible for older men to like Imagine Dragons. (It wouldn't surprise me if my fiancée's Mum listens to them fwiw.) I just doubt that's the primary demographic of their audience, which is what "Dadrock" implies to me.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:35 (five years ago) link

I'm still sort of "gobsmacked" (if I'm using that properly) to learn that Led Zeppelin are not really popular in the UK...

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:47 (five years ago) link

Like even without the "Classic Rock" radio format -- they weren't popular at the time? As an "album band"?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:49 (five years ago) link

As an album band of course, but the Now That's Blah Blah Blah comps are based on Top 40 singles afaik.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 23:52 (five years ago) link

I first remember the term Dadrock being used to invoke latter day Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene and sort of earnest grunting 'authentic' meaningful stuff with copious tasty guitar solos beloved of sundry ageing indie/mod types. It seems it might be different in the US though. I don't know where it came from originally.

fwiw as the creator of my thread my mom likes all of these songs and my dad likes ABBA and Blondie

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 00:09 (five years ago) link

My dad's favourite songs were "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" by Ian Dury and "Love Is In the Air" by John Paul Young (a particular favourite of dads I've found) and some Scottish folks, Irish rebel songs.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 00:14 (five years ago) link

(Scottish folk songs, not Scottish folks)

I have 3 kids and on road trips in our Honda Odyssey I make my kids listen to Can and Faust. My 6 year old daughter loves Amon Duul II, particularly the Yeti album.

my strongest memory of my dad is being in the car with him and frankie ford's "sea cruise" coming on the radio and him suddenly howling like a banshee

i was very scared, thought he got his hand stuck in the car door or something

now that i am his age i can kind of get behind his reaction

he also owned a lot of flatt & scruggs and janis joplin records

As a mid-50s dad I voted Deep Purple with confidence.

My dad overdid it on edibles at Red Rocks Dub Fest, got disoriented/zoned out, and had to call for a ride home. True story (that he's too embarrassed to talk about).

CSNY! Hendrix! VAN FUCKING MORRISON!

Does this list even know any dads?

...

gen x still thinks its dads are the dads when actually the dads are calling from inside the house

I find it oddly charming how this is one of the central disconnects of this thread (and related discussions). Especially since the thread is nearly old enough to be a dad itself.

Of course in 1988 "dads" to me meant "my dad, and the dads of my peers." Thirty years later, it's silly for "dads" to still mean "my dad, and the dads of my age-peers." The guys who might plausibly have avoided the brown acid at Woodstock are granddads and their rock is only "dad rock" if you're in Generation Dad yourself.

And then there's the regular pulse of people learning and re-learning about the UK/US divergence. This is so ilx it hurts

i mean my dad is my dad. he's not my granfather. he's not my uncle. he's my dad. im not peddling some grand conspiracy. im not saying younger dads don't exist.

Where's all the '90s alt? I'm no dad but I'm certainly dad-aged, and those are my go-to sad old man jams.

(This might be the first time I've had cause to consider whether the '90s alt-rock staples in the US even made a dent overseas.)

This list makes every rock artist fall under the dad-rock umbrella. Which I suppose it’s technically true since any rock fan can have kids but what’s the point of the tag then? I’ve always assumed it was more as a baby boomer dig to classify music they love from the 60s/70s like Eagles, America or Elton John.

Mine too! At a guess I'd say he also likes maybe half a dozen of these songs, I recently gave him my 45 of Don't Fear the Reaper after he mentioned hearing it on the radio, so I'm voting for that.

my dad likes exactly one of these songs:

2. The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up

My dad likes old folk music records. the Limelighters, the Weavers, etc. Everything on here would be a bit too much for him.

As a dad myself, I voted for Avril Lavigne. Probably the best thing on here other than Stooges and Motorhead, but I don't know what any of it is doing here.

I went to my daughter's friend's birthday party a few weeks ago and after the Moana soundtrack was done the dad-in-charge just played 3 straight hours of Dave Matthews Band, which no other dad there seemed to mind.

I am a dad. There are 23 songs on the list I would listen to all the way through on purpose. There are I think 15 that would make me change the channel. There are I think 11 I have literally never heard of.

To those in the overnight crew taking the fun out of this thread —

to be fair taking the fun out of things is classic dad

Puns are classic dad. Taking the puns out is classic bad.
