> but computers
the way that article talks about it ("made an AMP MP3 Playback Engine"), the mp3 player it mentions was software, not hardware. so computers. wikipedia says it later morphed into winamp.

What about "I like the way they play" or "I really want to see [insert Eng player that does not exist here]" or whatever.
― xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 09:35 (five years ago) link
FWIW it's actually a good thing that these people are supporting a group of mainly black working class lads without resorting to the usual racist/classist tropes whenever they see one of them with money. Better than resorting to the usual guff about rugby players or cricketers putting footballers to shame or whatever.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 09:42 (five years ago) link
I really want them to get humiliated. At least so all the 5live pundit crew who have blowing copious amounts of smoke up Southgate's arse do a complete u-turn on the fucking mediocrity!
Too late for that now, even if they do get hammered in the semis, it's already a triumph for England's brave lads. No doubt they will want to go back to the humble and anonymous lives they led before they were plucked from obscurity to carry out this great task in service of the English nation - the task of shoring up popular support for Brexit - but I doubt the media will allow that.

I think between some of the fallacious bollox being talked about brylcreem boy and Meades latest rumblings, then I might be going pro tribal tats.
― calzino, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 09:53 (five years ago) link
Seriously though, I do think they've done well enough now that not even a tanking could dim the heroic sheen on Dele Alli and the lads.
― Alan Alba (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 09:56 (five years ago) link
I'm sure even if on a losing side, Dele Alli will be more concerned about upholding the Corinthian values of the game than winning, that's what is great about these lads!
― calzino, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 10:02 (five years ago) link
Can someone who's read Fascism for Dummies or similar tell me about whether roaring success or roaring humiliation will be more likely to lead to a Brexity nationalist hell? I kind of assume it's the latter, so am happy for our boys to bring home the bacon.

One of the papers today had a front page about how Our Boys (as one?) had refused - refused! - the prospect of an open-topped bus unless they actually Bring Football Home.
I am pretty sure May would give them a full North Korean 10-hour march-past if it would distract.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 10:44 (five years ago) link
One of the tiny number of things I actually like about May - possibly the only thing - is that she has never at any point even tried to affect an interest in football. Rather that than some of the cringeworthy shit Cameron used to come out with.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 10:52 (five years ago) link
Cameron with his love of Villa or was it West Ham? Fuck knows, he wasn't that sure himself.
― calzino, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 11:03 (five years ago) link
A ham lover with a villa in the West iirc.

Ousmane Dembélé's substitute role for France & the long journeys across Russia have led him to create an entirely new team on Football Manager called Winchester FC in England: "This is my new project, there's going to be a South American atmosphere in the stadium."— Get French Football News (@GFFN) July 1, 2018
big question is if ousmane has made it into the prem yet. apparently he's gone for winchester fc bc he watches the last kingdom and is basically role-playing as a saxon

The current team is more interesting and dynamic, and in that sense they have betrayed themselves, as Spain did a decade ago.

England have a great chance of winning the World Cup – in four years’ time. is the worst analysis in the article. How can England possibly have a better chance of winning the next World Cup than this one when they are already in the semi final? A better team, quite possibly, but by no means a better chance of winning.

Fabian Delph went home for the Belgium game because his partner was giving birth; Andreas Granqvist played against England despite his partner giving birth
Sweden are going home, and they're going home because they DO NOT LOVE THEIR CHILDREN
Granqvist was also reportedly fined 50 grand for wearing non-regulation socks which may also have been a factor idk
Talk about a heel though jesus
